OpenAI launches ChatGPT ‘study mode' in India: How to use the free multilingual, interactive learning tool?

Indian Express6 days ago
OpenAI, on Tuesday, July 29, introduced 'study mode' in ChatGPT. The latest ChatGPT update introduces a step-by-step learning method instead of quick answers. 'Study Mode is designed to shift the ChatGPT experience from just giving answers to guiding users through the process of finding an answer step-by-step,' said Leah Belsky, vice president of education at OpenAI.
Study mode is available in 11 Indian languages with multimodal support, bringing voice, image, and text together to make AI learning accessible for diverse learners. Starting today, it is available to logged-in users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team, with availability in ChatGPT Edu rolling out in the next few weeks.
Belsky said that the feature has been extensively beta-tested by Indian students across a wide range of academic scenarios, be it everyday learning or exam preparation. According to Belsky, early testing showed strong performance, particularly on IIT-level questions. 'Study mode is free and available to millions of learners across India. Its mobile-friendly design ensures students from any part of the country, whether urban or rural, can engage with it easily, making high-quality learning support widely available,' she noted.
Study mode is useful for helping with homework, test preparation, and learning new topics. To use it, one needs to select 'Study and learn' from the tools in ChatGPT and ask a question. 'Instead of doing the work for them, study mode encourages students to think critically about their learning. Features like these are a positive step toward effective AI use for learning. Even in the AI era, the best learning still happens when students are excited about and actively engaging with the lesson material,' said Robbie Torney, senior director of AI programs at Common Sense Media.
What powers the study mode?
OpenAI has claimed that study mode is powered by its custom system instructions that have been written in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts to reflect the core set of behaviours that support deeper learning. 'This is just the beginning of our journey to improve learning in ChatGPT. We plan to continue improving Study Mode as we learn more about how students learn best with AI. Ultimately, every child growing up today will live in a world with powerful AI tools. Now is the time to ensure those tools support real learning outcomes and drive career success. Study Mode is a step in that direction,' said Belsky.
Study mode comes with interactive prompts that combine Socratic questioning, hints, and self-reflection prompts to promote active learning. With scaffolded responses, the study mode helps in organising information into easy-to-follow sections that highlight the key connections between topics. Study mode offers lessons tailored to the right level for the user, which it does based on questions that assess the skill level and memory from previous chats, along with improved memory from uploaded files. It also offers knowledge checks in the form of quizzes and open-ended questions, which are accompanied by personalised feedback to track progress. Besides, it is flexible, meaning students can easily toggle study mode on and off during a conversation.
When asked if study mode can be misused and what guardrails have been deployed to prevent misuse during exams or assignments, Belsky asserted that OpenAI has implemented robust safety measures, including those that prevent these models from producing harmful content. The tech executive said that the feature, like all other OpenAI models, underwent evaluations for safety before release.
'We see Study Mode as democratising access to high-quality tutoring and learning support across India. This is our first phase of improving learning in ChatGPT. Over time, we hope to build out more multimodal features, like image-generated responses and videos, to better personalize it for learners. In this beginning stage, the hope is to get as much feedback as we can from Indian parents, students, and academic leaders so we can continue advancing this product,' Belsky told indianexpress.com.
The new study mode is a step towards improving AI-driven learning. At present, it is powered by system instructions and allows for rapid iteration based on student feedback, despite some limitations. The company has said that with future updates, it aims to include clearer visualisations, goal tracking, personalised support based on skill level, etc. OpenAI also plans to integrate effective strategies into its core models over time.
Through its NextGenAI initiative and collaboration with Stanford's SCALE Initiative, it is also conducting long-term research on how AI impacts learning, particularly in K–12 education. The Microsoft-backed AI startup said it believes that these findings will help shape future AI tools to better support students and educators worldwide.

OpenAI prepping budget Go ChatGPT tier ahead of GPT-5 launch

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is likely preparing a new subscription plan called 'Go' that could be easier on the pocket compared to the current paid options. While there is no official word yet, the new plan might be announced around the time OpenAI rolls out its next big AI model, first hint about this new plan came from a user named Tibor Bhaho on X (formerly Twitter), who shared a screenshot of the ChatGPT web app code. The image showed some references to the 'Go' tier, suggesting that OpenAI may be testing it internally or planning to release it now, OpenAI offers two paid plans — the Plus plan for regular users at $20 (about Rs 1,750) per month and the Pro plan for developers, which costs $200 per month. The new Go plan is expected to be cheaper than Plus, which may help more users access the service without paying a high fee. However, the exact features that will be included in the Go plan are still unclear. It might offer access to newer but lighter versions of AI models like o3 or o4-mini-high. But it is also possible that advanced tools such as agents or OpenAI's video AI tool Sora will not be part of this lower-priced from this upcoming subscription tier, OpenAI also seems to be adding new features to the web version of ChatGPT. Some users have started noticing a 'Favourites' section and a 'Pin chat' feature, which may make it easier to save and manage conversations. These features, however, are not available to everyone yet and seem to be part of limited possible launch of the Go plan is being linked to the expected release of GPT-5. OpenAI has been working on this next-generation AI model for several months, though its rollout has been pushed back a few times due to safety concerns. GPT-5 is said to bring better performance, reasoning abilities, and deeper integration with tools like Sora and CEO Sam Altman recently confirmed that GPT-5 will be released soon. In a podcast chat with Theo Von, Altman shared a personal experience where he used GPT-5 to answer a question he didn't understand. He said the model responded instantly and correctly, which made him feel like the AI had outperformed him. 'It was a weird feeling,' Altman Go plan, if launched, could serve as a middle ground for users who want more than what's offered in the free version but don't want to spend heavily on Plus or Pro. With competition growing in the AI space, a budget plan might also help OpenAI attract more users while offering limited access to powerful tools. That said, none of this is confirmed by the company. Since the information comes from code-level leaks, there's always a chance OpenAI could change its plans or scrap the Go tier altogether. So, for now, it's best to wait for an official announcement.- Ends

Meet Janak Agrawal who cracked IIT-JEE, got AIR 2 in JEE, went to IIT Bombay, rejected Tesla's offer; today he is..., at 22 years old...

Success story: IIT JEE is one of the toughest exams in the world, and every year, thousands of Indian students take this exam to realise their dream of becoming a civil servant. A large number of them begin to prepare for the civil services exams right after Class 10 examinations. Those who perform exceptionally well in the UPSC or IIT JEE exam prefer to take admission into the prestigious IIT, and from there, they get good jobs with world-famous and prestigious multinational companies at high packages. Who is Janak Agrawal? To clear IIT is not an easy task. It requires loads of hard work, determination, and focus. Today, we will tell you about an IIT graduate, Janak Agrawal, who secured All India Rank (AIR) 2 in the JEE Advanced 2015. Janak Agrawal hails from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, from where he finished his Class 12 education at ILVA Higher Secondary School. He secured an impressive 91% in his board examinations. Janak was equally good at JEE, BITSAT, and KVPY. How did Janak Agrawal prepare for his examinations? Janak attended coaching classes for two years to prepare for the JEE at an Indore-based institute. He would do self-study on his own for six to eight hours every day. Later, he earned a in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay, following which he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Bachelor of Science (BS) and a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. What is Janak Agrawal doing today? Today, Janak is a co-founder of San Francisco, California-based Outspeed. Before that, he worked with a number of organisations, such as Pierx S24 and Climate Change AI. However, he left many people shocked when, at the age of 22, he declined an offer from Andrej Karpathy and the Tesla Autopilot team. He shared a LinkedIn post that read, 'At 22, I did the unthinkable: I turned down an offer from Andrej Karpathy and Tesla's Autopilot team. Bold move or just plain crazy? You decide. It was June 2020. COVID was at its peak, toilet paper was the new currency, and every company was laying off people faster than ever. Startups were disappearing like free donuts in the break room. I had 2 full-time offers – one from Tesla and another from a not so well known startup, AutoGrid. For anyone in their right mind, this would be an easy decision. But I couldn't imagine myself as another cog in Tesla's high-speed machine. So, naturally, I took my chances on AutoGrid.'
