Maintenance coordination gaps: Air India cancels 3 international flights; DGCA flags technical issues & crew limits
Air India on Wednesday cancelled three international flights due to maintenance, technical problems, and safety concerns linked to a volcanic eruption near Bali. Two of the cancellations occurred after passengers had already boarded, the airline confirmed.
According to a PTI report, flight AI188 from Toronto to Delhi was called off because of extended maintenance, which caused the crew to breach flight duty time limitations. Passengers who had already boarded were deplaned.
Similarly, flight AI996 from Dubai to Delhi was cancelled due to technical reasons, with passengers also being asked to disembark after boarding. The airline's Delhi-Bali flight AI2145 was forced to turn back mid-air after reports of volcanic activity near Bali airport.
The aircraft landed safely in Delhi, and all passengers were deboarded.
Air India said ground teams are working to rebook passengers at the earliest and full refunds or complimentary rescheduling have been offered.
The airline added it anticipates further disruptions amid intensified checks on its Boeing 787 fleet, ongoing airspace restrictions, and poor weather. This comes in the wake of the June 13 crash of a B787-8 in Ahmedabad, which killed 241 people, prompting India's aviation regulator to ramp up oversight.

Between June 12 and 17, Air India cancelled 66 scheduled Boeing 787-operated flights citing technical issues. Following a review, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) advised Air India to boost internal coordination across engineering, operations, and ground services, and ensure spare parts are available to avoid delays.
However, DGCA noted that recent surveillance of Air India's Boeing 787 fleet "did not reveal any major safety concerns" and found aircraft and maintenance systems "in compliance with existing safety standards."

Late on Saturday night, Iran targeted Israel's Haifa port and a nearby oil refinery in response to Tel Avi's attack on Iranian nuclear and other targets earlier this week. Shrapnels fell in the chemical terminal at the port and some other projectiles fell at the oil refinery, two sources aware of the matter said. They claimed there were no injuries. Adani's port, however, was not impacted by the strike. A piece of interceptor shrapnel was also found at the Kishan West (Haifa port) but there were no injuries, they said. Cargo operations at the Adani-operated port were unhampered. 'There are eight ships in the port now, cargo operations are normal,' a source told PTI. The Iranian ballistic missile attack did not inflict any damage to the port or its operations, the sources claimed. How Haifa port Operates? Haifa port is totally functioning normally, sources said, adding 8 ships were handling cargo as on Sunday. The port has approximately 700 employees. It handles different type of cargo, including containers, bulk, breakbulk, cement and general cargo. Haifa port serves as a crucial maritime hub, handling over 30 per cent of Israel's imports. It is owned by Adani Ports, which controls a 70 per cent share. Haifa is less than 3 per cent of the volume handled by Adani Ports and SEZ and contributed less than 2 per cent to the profits. Haifa handles a total cargo of 10-11 million tonnes annually, while APSEZ annual volumes are upwards of 450 million tonnes. Haifa is located at the nexus of Israel's economic and military networks, plays a critical role as an oil refinery, for industrial exports, and also for supporting naval operations. These functions give more importance to any foreign investor. India's acquisition of the Haifa port is part of its broader goals within the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). This multinational initiative brings together India, Israel, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the EU, and the US. It will connect Indian ports to Europe via the Arabian Peninsula and Israel. It can also be an alternative to the Red Sea–Suez Canal route. For India, holding a direct stake in the Haifa port gives multiple advantages, like streamlined trade with Europe, enhanced logistics infrastructure, and strengthened strategic ties with regional partners.

Air India to cut long haul international flights by 15%
Air India said that it will reduce flights to Europe and North America by 15% till mid-July to increase contingency aircraft to cater for cancellation. The airline has cancelled over 80 flights since last Thursday when one of its Boeing 787 aircraft crashed seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad killing 241 on board and 30 on ground. Most of those flights were to be operated by 787 aircraft and were cancelled due DGCA's enhanced inspection, the effect of which was compounded due to the closure of the Iran airspace forcing airlines longer diversion. Night curfew in European airports further delayed the return leg as pilots also ran out of their permitted duty hours. 'The cuts will be implemented between now and 20 June and will continue thereafter until at least mid-July. This effectively adds to our reserve aircraft availability to take care of any unplanned disruptions.' Live Events The statement came after Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran told a TV channel that the airline failed to communicate efficiently to its customers about the cancellations. Air India said that checks have been completed on 26 787r aircraft. Six aircraft, currently under maintenance, will undergo checks when they return to the fleet. Air India has a fleet of 33 787 aircraft, the oldest of which was acquired in 2012. The plane that went down in Ahmedabad entered service in 2014. The airline said that along with the 787, it will also undertake enhanced safety checks on its Boeing 777 fleet for added precaution.
