BDS Denounces Election of Israeli Football Chief to UEFA Executive Committee

Morocco World04-04-2025
Rabat – The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement has condemned the election of Israel Football Association Chairman Moshe Zuares to the Executive Committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
On Thursday, April 3, UEFA announced that Zuares had secured 15 votes from fellow members, earning a two-year term over Ukrainian Football Association President Abal Rafael Louzan.
The Palestinian-led movement, which advocates for the cultural and economic boycott of Israel as a means of challenging its occupation of Palestinian land, took to social media to denounce UEFA, labeling it as an enabler of 'Ethnic Cleansing, Forced displacement, Apartheid and genocide.'
'Our hope has never been in the corrupt colonial powers governing world football, but in the growing number of fan clubs and teams raising 'Red Card Israel' banners in stadiums around the world,' said BDS.
The movement stated that sports fans globally are protesting Israel's actions by joining the cultural boycott under the banner 'Red Card Genocidal Apartheid Israel.' It urged supporters to 'peacefully disrupt' matches until major sports organizations, including FIFA and UEFA, uphold international law and their own regulations by banning Israel.
BDS argues that Israel's participation in international sports serves to legitimize its settler colonial policies and apartheid system, which have oppressed Palestinians since 1948. The movement has long criticized Western-dominated sports bodies for ignoring these issues and failing to take action against Israeli teams.
This is especially poignant given Israel's ongoing attacks, imprisonment, and killing of Palestinian athletes, as well as systemic racism within Israeli sports, including segregated football leagues and unchecked anti-Palestinian hate from fan clubs.
'Athletes are denied freedom of movement to attend their own matches, competitions, and training. Palestinian stadiums and sports facilities have been bombed and destroyed. Israel even prevents the import of sports equipment and the development of sports infrastructure,' BDS states on its official website.
In March, the Palestinian Football Association sent a letter to UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, urging him to disqualify Zuares from the election and expressing 'profound disappointment' that he had passed UEFA's eligibility checks.
The PA noted that Zuares had visited an Israeli Air Force base amid the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) ongoing genocide on Gaza, where he reportedly expressed support for the hostile campaign stating, 'Together, we will win.'
In response, Israel sought to retaliate against Palestinian Football Association head Jibril Rajoub, accusing him of violating FIFA regulations by 'using sports to promote terrorism and violence.' Israel's claims stem from Rajoub's comments contextualizing the Hamas-led October 2023 attacks within the broader Palestinian struggle against occupation.

Real Madrid Stand Tall at Top of UEFA Rankings

Real Madrid continue to assert their dominance in European football, holding the number one spot in UEFA's club rankings ahead of the new season. The Spanish giants have long been synonymous with Champions League success, their record 15 titles putting them well ahead of any rival. UEFA's club rankings, which track performance over five seasons, highlight just how consistently the men in white have performed on the continental stage. Real Madrid are the top-ranked club. According to UEFA's official website, Real Madrid's points over the past four seasons read 30, 29, 34 and 24.5, bringing their total to 117.5 points heading into the upcoming campaign. Their nearest challengers are Bayern Munich with 108.25 points, followed by Inter Milan on 107.25. Barcelona are the highest-placed Spanish side after Real, sitting ninth with 83.25 points. Last season marked a relative low for Real, as they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Arsenal, the weakest contribution in their five-year tally. Los Blancos will now aim to return to their usual standard and push deeper in the Champions League next season. Tags: Real MadridUEFA champions league

Barcelona Hit with UEFA Ban: Flick To Miss Opener

Barcelona will be without coach Hansi Flick and assistant Marcus Sorg for their opening Champions League match after UEFA handed both a one-game ban and a €20,000 fine. The sanction follows their conduct during last season's semi-final defeat to Inter Milan. Barcelona felt several key decisions, particularly in extra time, went against them and this prompted heated protests from Flick and Sorg both on the touchline and in the post-match press conference. UEFA cited breaches of its disciplinary rules, specifically Article 11, which demands respect, fairness and sportsmanship from all participants. The governing body said the pair had 'broken the general principles of conduct' and 'violated the basic rules of decent conduct.' Yamal and Raphinha were also sanctioned for 'failing to report immediately to the Doping Control Post' following the match. The good news for Barcelona is that both players escaped a match ban and were each fined €5,000 ($5,825). The Spanish giants will be eager to move on from their heartbreaking defeat at the San Siro. Barcelona believed they had secured a place in the Champions League final after Raphinha scored the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute, only to concede a stoppage-time equaliser and then Davide Frattesi's winner in extra time. The Catalans went on to claim a domestic treble, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. Still, they have made clear that their ultimate aim is to bring European glory back to Catalonia. Flick's team will have their chance at redemption when the 2025–26 Champions League group stage kicks off in September, but they will have to do so without their manager on the touchline for the opening game. UN Probe Finds Evidence of Torture in Myanmar

Rabat – The UN-led Independent Mechanism for Myanmar (IMM) released a report this morning detailing systematic torture in the Southeast Asian nation. The report details systematic torture in Myanmar prisons and detention center, naming senior government figures responsible for these atrocities. It includes detailed incidents of detainees receiving beatings, electric shocks, strangulation, and finger-nail removal with pliers. The report also documented the abuse of children, who have been detained unlawfully as proxies for missing parents and family members. Nicholas Koumjian, head of the UN-led mechanism, said in a statement accompanying the organization's 16-page report: 'We have uncovered significant evidence, including eyewitness testimony, showing systematic torture in Myanmar detention facilities.' The report equally included findings covering a period over a year, using information from more than 1,300 sources, including hundreds of witness accounts, forensic analysis, photographs and documents. The IMM has also identified high-ranking commanders among the perpetrators involved in the torture and abuse which has occurred across the country. A country in unending turmoil Since the 2021 military coup against the democratic government, the country has been in turmoil and is currently going through a civil war. The UN estimates that tens of thousands of people have been affected by harsh crackdowns. Refugees, mainly from the Rohingya Muslim minority, have also been attacked in recent years, with many members of the ethnic minority having fled to countries like Bangladesh. The UN-affiliated organization has been monitoring human rights abuses dating back to 2011 in Myanmar and reflects on this period of military governance, negatively. However, budget cuts have recently placed the UN body under threat as they are struggling to find funding to continue their work. The military government in Myanmar has refused to respond to these accusations, but it is clear that this report sheds much needed human rights abuses within the country.
