Thrifty mother-of-five who wrote 'Feed your family for £20 a week' cookbook reveals how much her recipes cost to make NOW thanks to soaring inflation

Daily Mail16-07-2025
A Scottish mother-of-five who wrote a best-selling book six years ago on how to feed her family for just £20-a-week says soaring food prices means it would now cost almost double to do the same recipes.
Lorna Cooper, 48, from Paisley, Renfreshire, who has three children of her own and is step-mother to two, wrote the cookbook, 'Feed your family for £20-a-week', after sharing her tips on Facebook and winning more than half a million followers.
However, with inflation defying predictions again to rise to 3.6 per cent, the thrifty mother says food and drink prices have soared so much that her original £20 weekly shop budget could now only be used in 'an emergency situation'.
The headline CPI rate had been expected to stay on hold at 3.4 per cent in the year to June, but instead skipped up to 3.6 per cent.
The increase heaps woe on the Chancellor Rachel Reeves as she struggles to balance the books and get the economy going, casting doubt on the prospects for the Bank of England cutting interest rates quickly.
Speaking to Radio 5 Live breakfast, family cook Cooper said increased prices 'across the board' in supermarkets meant the dishes she once cooked were now nearer to £35 to £40-a-week.
The Scot originally created the Facebook page after struggling to meet her brood's £100-a-week food bill after a back injury left her unable to work in 2014.
Failing to qualify for sick pay, she was forced to tighten the purse strings, and through savvy shopping, buying in bulk and batch cooking, she managed to slash her food bill to just £20 a week.
On her original list were a combination of fresh, freezer and store cupboard foods.
However, now she says the same food to make the same dishes that she created six years prior have shot up by 71% in that time.
She told 5 Live presenter Rick Edwards: 'Every time you go into a shop, you pick something up and it's ten pence more than it was the week before.'
She said eight weeks' worth of shopping that would once have cost £160 would now be priced at £272.38.
The food blogger explained: 'Instead of £19.96 a week, it's now £34.05 - it's a big jump.'
She said she calculates the price of her menus list every six months and in January this year it was recorded at £30.90, going up by more than 10 per cent since.
'I made an emergency shopping list last year that came in at £21.50 [a week] but it's such a basic list that it's not sustainable.
'It's literally for an emergency - it will do you for a couple of weeks but it's not a sustainable healthy menu or meal plan for a family at all.'
Lorna's tips for feeding your family on a budget
1. Go shopping at the end of the day
2. Cook in bulk
3. Be adaptable - use ingredients reduced or on special offer
4. Shop in less obvious places - don't rely just on major supermarkets
5. Buy super-size for bigger discounts
6. Use your leftovers
7. Stop buying treats and make your own
8. Don't be scared to substitute
9. Stop throwing food out
10. Grow your own food
Cooper added: 'There's so many tips I could give - but you're not feeding your family for £20 these days.
'People used to need help to get through a tough spot - the odd month - increasingly now it's every month.'
The inflation increase heaps woe on the Chancellor as she struggles to balance the books and get the economy going, casting doubt on the prospects for the Bank of England cutting interest rates quickly.
Fuel was the biggest contributor, while food prices were rising at the fastest pace since February last year.
Worryingly for the Treasury, closely-watched CPI core inflation - excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco - was up from 3.5 per cent to 3.7 per cent.
Ms Reeves did not directly address the increase in a statement, saying she 'knows working people are still struggling with the cost of living ' and is determined to 'put more money into people's pockets'.
ONS Acting Chief Economist Richard Heys said: 'Inflation ticked up in June driven mainly by motor fuel prices which fell only slightly, compared with a much larger decrease at this time last year.
'Food price inflation has increased for the third consecutive month to its highest annual rate since February of last year.
'However, it remains well below the peak seen in early 2023.'
Ms Reeves said: 'I know working people are still struggling with the cost of living.
'That is why we have already taken action by increasing the national minimum wage for three million workers, rolling out free breakfast clubs in every primary school and extending the £3 bus far cap.
'But there is more to do and I'm determined we deliver on our Plan for Change to put more money into people's pockets.'
Shadow chancellor Mel Stride said: 'This morning's news that inflation remains well above the 2 per cent target is deeply worrying for families.

Exact date 100,000s of households need to claim key benefits to qualify for £150 cost of living cash revealed

HUNDREDS of thousands of households will need to claim benefits on a specific day to qualify for this year's Warm Home Discount. The eligibility requirements for the scheme, which automatically credits £150 to a customer's energy account, are similar to last year. 1 There are two Warm Home Discount schemes - one for England and Wales, and one for Scotland. Those living in England and Wales do not need to apply for the scheme, but those living in Scotland do. Between October and December, the government will issue letters to households that qualify for the scheme. However, to be eligible for the discount, you need to be claiming one of nine means-tested benefits on a specific date this month. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, which administers the Warm Home Discount, says households must have an active claim for any of the following benefits on Sunday, August 24: If you aren't claiming any of these benefits on August 24, 2025, you won't be eligible for the payment. However, even if you aren't receiving pension credit on the qualifying date, there's a trick you can follow to ensure that you get the extra cash later. This is because your eligibility for certain benefits can be backdated. For example, successful pension credit claims can be backdated by three months. Could you be eligible for Pension Credit? Claims for Universal Credit can be backdated by one month. Around 700,000 pensioners are eligible for pension credit but not claiming it. What is pension credit and how do you apply? PENSION credit tops up your weekly income to £227.10 if you are single or to £346.60 if you have a partner. This is known as "guarantee credit". If your income is lower than this, you're very likely to be eligible for the benefit. However, if your income is slightly higher, you might still be eligible for pension credit if you have a disability, you care for someone, you have savings or you have housing costs. You could get an extra £82.90 a week if you have a disability or claim any of the following: Attendance allowance The middle or highest rate from the care component of disability living allowance (DLA) The daily living component of personal independence payment (PIP) Armed forces independence payment The daily living component of adult disability payment (ADP) at the standard or enhanced rate. You could get the "savings credit" part of pension credit if both of the following apply: You reached State Pension age before April 6, 2016 You saved some money for retirement, for example, a personal or workplace pension This part of pension credit is worth £17.30 for single people or £19.36 for couples. Claims for pension credit also open doors to a number of freebies and discounts. For example, pension credit claimants over 75 qualify for a free TV licence worth up to £174.50 a year. Claims for the benefit also provide eligibility to £25 a week cold weather payments and the £150 warm home discount. Applications for pension credit can be made on the government website or by ringing the pension credit claim line on 0800 99 1234. What if I live in Scotland? In Scotland there's a "core group" that'll receive an automatic payment and a "broader group" which has to apply for the scheme with their energy provider. You'll need to check with your energy supplier directly to see the eligibility requirements and details on how to apply. The scheme will have more applicants than places, so make sure you apply as soon as possible. What energy bill help is available? There's a number of different ways to get help paying your energy bills if you're struggling to get by. If you fall into debt, you can always approach your supplier to see if they can put you on a repayment plan before putting you on a prepayment meter. This involves paying off what you owe in instalments over a set period. If your supplier offers you a repayment plan you don't think you can afford, speak to them again to see if you can negotiate a better deal. Several energy firms have schemes available to customers struggling to cover their bills. But eligibility criteria vary depending on the supplier and the amount you can get depends on your financial circumstances. For example, British Gas or Scottish Gas customers struggling to pay their energy bills can get grants worth up to £2,000. British Gas also offers help via its British Gas Energy Trust and Individuals Family Fund. You don't need to be a British Gas customer to apply for the second fund. EDF, Octopus Energy and Scottish Power all offer grants to struggling customers too. Thousands of vulnerable households are missing out on extra help and protections by not signing up to the Priority Services Register (PSR). The service helps support vulnerable households, such as those who are elderly or ill. Some of the perks include being given advance warning of blackouts, free gas safety checks and extra support if you're struggling. Get in touch with your energy firm to see if you can apply.

Government-backed scheme to transition oil and gas workers opens

A scheme backed by the Scottish and UK Governments will offer advice and training to oil and gas workers looking to move into green energy. The pilot will help about 200 current or former workers in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire with support and funding for training courses, in a move energy minister Michael Shanks said would 'help deliver a fair and prosperous transition'. Both Governments have pinpointed the north east as being crucial to the planned transition away from fossil fuels, with £900,000 made available by the UK Government and an additional £40,000 from the Scottish Government for the first raft of applicants. But the Scottish Conservatives criticised the plans as 'frankly embarrassing', claiming the funding was not enough. 'Aberdeen has been the energy capital of Britain for decades and while oil and gas will be with us for decades to come, we are determined to make sure that workers are supported to access the thousands of jobs in industries such as offshore wind and carbon capture,' the energy minister said. 'This funding will help deliver a fair and prosperous transition in the North Sea, unlocking the full potential of renewable energy and reaping the economic benefits from the skills and experiences of Aberdeen's workforce.' Scottish Tory net zero spokesman Douglas Lumsden said: 'It's frankly embarrassing that Labour and the SNP are boasting about this scheme. 'This support for 200 workers amounts to a drop in the ocean when compared to the projected 400 jobs a fortnight being lost thanks to their decimation of the oil and gas sector. 'Both parties shamefully opposed Rosebank and Cambo (oil fields) and have said they're against North Sea drilling altogether. 'This sector drives £14 billion into our economy and supports 83,000 jobs, but John Swinney and Keir Starmer have sold it down the river.' But Scottish Secretary Ian Murray described the announcement as 'good news' for the area and the industry, claiming it will 'ensure there is a key role for our offshore workers in delivering our net zero future'. And Scottish Energy Secretary Gillian Martin said: 'The north east of Scotland has long been a titan in the oil and gas industry and the expertise within our workforce must be at the heart of driving a just transition to new fuels and sustainable energy. 'This new oil and gas transition training fund will support offshore workers to take on roles in the sustainable energy sector and has been designed and developed by the Scottish Government, supported by funding from UK Government's regional skills pilot for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, and will be delivered by Skills Development Scotland. 'Through initiatives such as the just transition fund and the energy transition fund, the Scottish Government has already invested £120 million in the north east's transition to net zero to help create green jobs, support innovation, and secure the highly skilled workforce of the future.' The programme will be run by Skills Development Scotland.
