The victim's first-person account, now part of the cybercrime police investigation, reads like a crime thriller filled with deceit, conspiracy, and extortion.
The victim recalled how a man named Abhishek Singh lured him with promises of safe employment in a Bangkok-based IT company called I-Tech. "I was working in I-Tech in Bangkok for the past seven months… there is no tension here, only simple data entry work," Singh assured, persuading him to book tickets for Thailand.
On arrival at Bangkok airport, their ordeal began. A stranger guided him into a taxi where his passport was seized. Driven hundreds of kilometres away, he was lodged in hotels and constantly reassured by Singh. But soon, the assurances dissolved into fear. "You said the company was near Bangkok city, but we have already travelled nearly 400 km," the victim protested over WhatsApp.
What awaited was shocking: confinement in a guarded compound near the Myanmar border, surrounded by armed men and forced to undergo "training" for online fraud.
"We were told to call citizens of different countries and trick them into financial frauds," recalled the victims.
When he refused, he was beaten, his phone confiscated, and locked up for five days. Later, the Chinese handler, identified as "Bulan," demanded a penalty of Rs 3.5 lakh for his release. Under duress, the victim's family arranged the payment and sent it through QR codes provided by the gang. Only after the money was transferred was he released and pushed across the border in a boat before finding his way back to Bangkok and eventually flying home.

Cybercrime officers said the case was part of a growing pattern where young Gujaratis are tricked into foreign job offers but end up enslaved by cyberfraud gangs run from Myanmar and other regions. "Young men from Gujarat are specifically targeted and confined to carry out online frauds. It is made to look like legitimate employment but is nothing more than digital slavery," a cybercrime officer explained.
The ordeal left the victim scarred but determined to warn others. He secretly recorded videos during captivity, which later became crucial evidence. His words echo the constant threats he faced: "If you refuse to work, remember you have already crossed illegally into Myanmar. You will be treated as a criminal anyway."

How to avoid jail? Get pregnant: Woman gives birth thrice in 4 years to skip prison, leaves social media shocked
A Chinese woman has avoided jail for years by repeatedly becoming pregnant. The woman, using the name Chen Hong, was sentenced to five years for fraud in Shanxi in December 2020. However, she never actually served time. Instead, she gave birth to three children with one man over four years. Under Chinese law, women who are pregnant or nursing can serve their sentence outside prison. It is usually done at home or in a hospital, with supervision by local authorities. They must provide medical or pregnancy reports every three months, and inspections are carried out regularly. The South China Morning Post reported that, after years of evasion, Chen had finally been brought to justice. In May 2025, an inspection showed that, though she had just delivered her third baby, the child did not live with her. Records revealed the child was registered under her former husband's sister, making it legally hers. Chen later admitted she had divorced. Her first two children were with her ex-husband. And, the third was given to his sister, the publication added. Authorities decided she had misused pregnancy as an excuse to escape jail. With less than a year left, she was sent to a detention centre to finish her sentence. Social media users reacted to this bizarre incident. 'I was more shocked that she could get pregnant when she wanted,' SCMP quoted one of them as saying. 'Judging from my own experience, it is easier to get pregnant right after giving birth,' observed another. Another user commented, 'I pity the three children who were born only because their mother wanted to escape prison.' Chen Hong is not the first woman to apply this strategy to avoid her jail term. A Chinese woman named Zeng avoided prison for ten years by becoming pregnant again and again. She was sentenced to life imprisonment for corruption in 2005 but escaped jail because she was pregnant at the time. After the probation decision, she even went for an abortion. From 2006 onwards, Zeng reported 14 pregnancies in ten years. One was false while 13 were genuine, according to People's Daily Online. This cycle allowed her to delay serving her sentence for a decade. Her unusual tactic finally came to an end when the court sent her to prison in 2015.

Delhi HC slaps Rs 10 lakh cost on litigant for filing pleas to extort money
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) The Delhi High Court has expressed shock and imposed Rs 10 lakh cost on a man for filing pleas alleging illegal constructions in the capital with the aid of his lawyer and motive to extort money. Justice Mini Pushkarna said it was dealing with cases of unauthorised constructions 'strictly with an iron hand", but had to also ensure the process of the court was not misused by anyone to extort money from the persons involved in such constructions. The court, therefore, pulled up petitioner Anil Lodhi, General Secretary of Azad Market RWA, who was found involved in cases of impersonation and extortion. The court went on to refer to the Bar Council of Delhi, the name of advocate Babu Lal Gupta, who was involved with a purported NGO named Green Gold Earth of World, to consider his conduct and assess if there were any violations of the applicable rules and regulations in relation to the matter and take requisite action. 'This court also takes note of the submission made by counsel appearing for the private respondents that Anil Lodhi, General Secretary of Azad Market RWA, has been approaching their clients for the purpose of extorting money from them. These facts are alarming and shocking, which disclose the deplorable conduct of the petitioner in filing cases for extorting money from people, by misusing and abusing the process of this court," the court said in its August 7 order. The order was directed to be tagged with all future petitions, which Lodhi or the NGO affiliated to him, could file in future. The proceeding before a court, the order said, was a 'solemn process" for furthering the cause of justice, and not for aiding unlawful objectives of certain individuals. The court noted many of Lodhi's cases were filed through the same lawyer and the address given for the NGO in which Lodhi claimed to be a trustee, was of the lawyer's chamber allotted to Gupta. The court was hearing the petitions filed by Azad Market RWA, through Lodhi, seeking directions to the authorities to take action against the illegal and unauthorised constructions in certain shops situated at Roshanara Road and Rani Jhansi Road, Jhandewalan, along with action against misuse of electricity and drinking water. The court was informed that the MCD had already initiated requisite action against them. The MCD was further directed to take action in a time bound manner in case of any illegality. The order observed the alleged illegal construction was not in the vicinity of the petitioner's neighbourhood. The petitioner was found to have filed similar pleas against illegal encroachment in the past, including through the NGO. The court referred to a report of the Registrar of Societies and said the NGO was not registered. The litigant was said to have misused the court process under the garb of social work with oblique motives and moving the court with 'unclean hands". He was directed to deposit the fine amount within six weeks. PTI SKV SKV AMK AMK view comments First Published: August 19, 2025, 17:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
