Four armed criminals arrested in J'khand's Palamu

Medininagar (Jharkhand), Aug 19 (PTI) Four armed criminals were arrested in Jharkhand's Palamu district, police said on Tuesday.
They were picked up from Pokhrah under Sadar police station area on Monday night.
Two pistols, including one Australian-made, 50 live cartridges, four mobile phones, three motorcycles and Rs 22,000 cash were recovered from their possession, they said.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rakesh Singh said the criminals belong to one Rahul Singh gang from Latehar district, who had provided them with the weapons.
The accused were identified as Sahzad Alam (30), Rohit Kumar (24), Farhan Qureshi (24) and Sahil Kumar (23). PTI CORR SAN SAN MNB

3 arrested for cheating jewellers mortgaging ornaments with fake gold hallmark signs
Pune city police have arrested a gang of three for allegedly cheating jewellers by mortgaging jewellery with fake gold hallmark signs. Police have identified the suspects as Rohit Sanjay Gore (30) of Mohan Nagar, Dhankawadi, Ajay Dattatraya Pawar (28) and Om Sundar Kharat (23) of Wadgaon Budruk. Acting on a tip-off to police havaldar Nitin Mundhe of the crime branch, a team led by assistant police inspector Madan Kamble, laid a trap and nabbed the three accused at Khandve Nagar in Wagholi on August 18. Police recovered cash of Rs 3 lakh in cash along with their cell phones and some jewellery with fake gold hallmarks from their possession. A probe revealed that the accused have duped at least four jewellery shops in the city by mortgaging and selling them fake gold ornaments in the last few months. Subsequently, four separate FIRs were registered against them at the Chandan Nagar, Kalepadal, Parvati and Ambegaon police stations. Police said in February this year, one of the accused persons allegedly went to the Hanuman Jewellers in Hadapsar area saying he wanted money by mortgaging gold. He deposited a neck chain and bracelet carrying '22 carat 916 hallmark' at the jewellery shop and took a mortgage loan of Rs 2.25 lakh against it. When the shop owners checked the ornaments under machines, it was found to be fake gold jewellery with fraudulent hallmarks, police said. The accused similarly duped Salunkhe Jewellers in Ambegaon Khurd to the tune of Rs 1 lakh and Nandadeep jewellers in Dattawadi of Rs 1.4 lakh using the same method. Police said in the last month, the accused duped Sawanliya Jewellers in Wadgaon Sheri of Rs 85,000 by mortgaging a chain with fake gold hallmark. The accused also came back to the same shop again saying they wanted to sell a gold bracelet with a 22 carat hallmark. In exchange for the bracelet, they took a gold chain of Rs 1.13 lakh from the sop and left the place. The jewellery shop owner later came to know that the chain and bracelet given by the accused persons were not made of gold and carried fake hallmark signs, police said.

Lebanon releases Israeli citizen held in detention for year
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Tel Aviv, Aug 21 (AP) An Israeli citizen detained in Lebanon has been returned to Israel after more than a year in detention, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Thursday. There was little information given about the man, identified as Salah Abu-Hussein, an Arab citizen of Israel. His imprisonment had not garnered public attention in Israel or Lebanon. Israeli media reported that the man's family had reported him missing around a year ago and was unaware he was in Lebanon. Four Lebanese security and judicial officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly about the case, said the man had entered the country illegally by crossing the land border between the two countries and was then caught by Lebanese security officials. At the time of his crossing, Israeli forces and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah were engaged in ongoing low-level clashes in the border region, which escalated into a full-scale war in September 2024. It was halted by a US-brokered ceasefire two months later. Abu-Hussein's release was negotiated in secret over the past few months in cooperation with the Red Cross, according to Gal Hirsch, Netanyahu's coordinator for the Hostages and the Missing, who is also Israel's point of contact for the hostages in Gaza. On Thursday, Lebanese Authorities handed Abu-Hussein to Hirsch at the Rosh Hanikra crossing between Lebanon and Israel, which is not open to the public. Lebanon and Israel do not have diplomatic relations and Israeli citizens are prohibited from entering Lebanon under Lebanese law, with rare exceptions for Palestinians holding Israeli citizenship. Netanyahu hailed the return of Abu-Hussein. 'This is a positive step and a sign of things to come," he said after Abu-Hussein returned. There was no official comment from the Lebanese government on his release. A group advocating for Lebanese citizens held in Israeli prisons denounced the move. The Representative Committee of Lebanese Prisoners and Freed Prisoners said in a statement that 19 Lebanese citizens are imprisoned in Israel and called the release of the Israeli citizen by Lebanon 'blatant betrayal." 10-year-old girl raped in Delhis Narela; accused arrested
New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) A 35-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl in Delhi's Narela Industrial Area, the police said on Thursday. The incident occurred late on Wednesday night when the accused, a factory worker, took the girl to an abandoned flat, they said. 'Upon reaching the location, it was found that the victim, a resident of Narela, had been sexually assaulted by the accused, who is her neighbour. He was immediately taken into custody," a senior police officer said. The girl was provided medical aid, and her statement is being recorded in the presence of counsellors, the police said.
