OPEN// PM: Egypt committed to supporting Somali president's vision for unified, prosperous state
CAIRO, April 25 (MENA) - Egypt has always been, and will always remain, committed to supporting the Federal Republic of Somalia, together with the international community, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said.
Madbouli made the remarks while participating on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in the Extraordinary Summit of the Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), held in Entebbe on Friday.
He emphasized Egypt's unwavering support for Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's vision of establishing a unified and prosperous state.
'The decision to lift the long-standing arms embargo, the adoption of tangible measures to alleviate Somalia's debt burden, and holding the Somali Security Conference in December 2023, have created political momentum that benefitted Somalia's national army,' the premier noted in a speech during the summit, in the presence of Minister of Foreign, Emigration and Expatriates Affairs Badr Abdelatty.
'But unfortunately, despite such momentum, we witnessed a state of uncertainty and obscurity in the international community's priorities throughout 2024, which gave Al-Shabaab group an opportunity to regain strength and undermine hard-won gains achieved by the Somali National Army in 2022 and 2023," the premier said.
He added that the establishment of AUSSOM provides an opportunity for the international community to renew its commitment and demonstrate its determination to help the people of Somalia in their pursuit of peace, stability, and development.
'Egypt welcomes the opportunity offered by this well-timed summit for the Federal Government of Somalia and its partner countries to develop a clear approach to reviving AUSSOM, overcoming the mounting threats posed by terrorists, and preserving Somalia's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,' the prime minister said.
He asserted the need to focus on mobilizing all necessary resources to enable the Somali National Army to safeguard its substantial gains on the ground.
The summit aims to define the roles, commitments, and contributions of troop- and police-contributing countries involved in the new African mission to Somalia.

Rwanda Withdraws from ECCAS over Blocked Leadership Transfer
Israa Farhan Rwanda has officially withdrawn from the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) after the regional bloc refused to grant it the rotating presidency, in breach of its charter. In response, Rwanda has also submitted a formal complaint to the African Union, condemning what it described as illegal actions by ECCAS. Established in 1983 and based in Libreville, Gabon, ECCAS comprises Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and São Tomé and Príncipe. OPEN// Egypt, Nigeria FMs discuss economic ties and African security
CAIRO, June 7 (MENA) – Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty praised the strong ties and historical relationship between Egypt and Nigeria, highlighting a shared commitment to building on existing opportunities to advance cooperation—particularly in economic, trade, and investment sectors, with a focus on agriculture. During a phone call on Saturday with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Abdelatty pointed to the significant presence of Egyptian companies across Africa and voiced interest in exploring new joint investment opportunities that offer mutual benefit. The two ministers exchanged views on developments across the African continent and discussed ways to deepen cooperation and coordinate positions within the African Union to strengthen peace and security—especially in the Sahel region. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's readiness to support efforts to counter terrorism and extremism in light of security threats in the Sahel. He also emphasized Egypt's commitment to supporting Nigeria through capacity-building programs, including cooperation with Al-Azhar in combating extremist ideologies. The conversation also included an exchange of perspectives on Middle East developments, particularly the situation in Gaza. CAIRO, June 8 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty praised on Sunday the ongoing progress in bilateral relations with Turkey, following a series of high-level reciprocal visits between the two countries. In a phone call with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Abdelatty expressed Egypt's eagerness to further strengthen economic, investment and trade cooperation, leveraging the substantial capabilities and opportunities available to both friendly nations. The call is part of regular diplomatic engagement aimed at deepening Egyptian-Turkish cooperation and exchanging views on key developments in the Middle East. The two foreign ministers discussed major regional issues, with a special focus on the escalating humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip. Abdelatty briefed his Turkish counterpart on Egypt's ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire deal, facilitate the release of hostages and detainees and ensure the delivery of humanitarian and medical aid, as well as shelters, to the Palestinian population.
