Investors and tech experts have stressed the need for developing a stronger startup-investor bridge so that newcomers in the field of technology may leverage and boost the national economy.
They said this on the second day of a five-day moot titled "Pakistan Investor Summit 25, Summer Edition", being held at the National Incubation Centre (NIC), Karachi from May 12 to 16. It has been organised by the NIC Karachi, funded by Ignite under the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication and operated by LMKT in partnership with Lucky Landmark (YB Group) and Orbit Startups.
YB Holdings Chief Operating Officer Muhammad Humair shared his perspective on the future of smart capital, saying "smart capital today is about more than money, it's about insight, timing and value creation. Investors who understand the founder's journey are the ones who drive sustainable returns."
Alpha Beta Core CEO Farhan Bashir Khan emphasised the importance of understanding the risk appetite and said investment decisions must reflect both opportunity and investor temperament. Strong returns come when strategy is grounded in real-time risk modeling and sector fluency.
Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Senior Vice President Saquib Fayyaz Magoon highlighted the critical role of platforms like the NIC Karachi in national economic development.
He said, "NIC Karachi is where innovation meets execution. As the SVP of FPCCI, I invite our entire member base to visit the NIC Karachi; our industries must open doors to these brilliant startups to build a stronger, more interconnected Pakistan."
NIC Karachi Project Director Syed Azfar Hussain said, "This summit is a movement. The quality of insights, the openness of discussion and the drive to build a stronger startup-investor bridge have been truly inspiring.
We're proud to host such impactful conversations at the NIC Karachi, where Pakistan's innovative future is being shaped every day."

President FPCCI emphasises continuity of policies

KARACHI: President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Atif Ikram Sheikh said that continuity of policies is necessary to continue the journey of economic improvement. Response to the economic survey of Pakistan presented by Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb Minister for Finance & Revenue, he said Pakistan has achieved many successes on the economic front in the past one year and the economic survey does not reflect economic successes in this way. Pakistan has made a good economic recovery, the government needs to take this recovery towards stability, he added. This year, the size of the economy has exceeded $ 400 billion for the first time, which is a great achievement, said Atif Ikram Sheikh. However, he was of the view that in addition to these achievements, more work is needed on many sectors of the economy. The major decline in large-scale manufacturing in the current fiscal year is worrying, he expressed. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

FPCCI opposes new taxes in budget

KARACHI: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Vice President Muhammad Aman Paracha has voiced strong opposition to reports of new taxes being imposed on existing taxpayers in the upcoming federal budget for the fiscal year 2025-26. The organization has urged the government to refrain from introducing new taxes on imports, exports, and other sectors in order to promote national trade, industrial growth, and to encourage new investments. The FPCCI warned that if the government imposes additional taxes under pressure from the IMF, the FPCCI will actively oppose such measures. FPCCI Vice President Muhammad Aman Paracha emphasized the need to separate tax policy from tax administration to avoid conflicts of interest. He further suggested that the budget-making process should not be treated merely as a routine financial exercise but should be transformed into a strategic economic tool. Aman Paracha stressed the importance of expanding the tax net to include all untaxed and under-taxed sectors, noting that imposing additional taxes on those who are already compliant would have adverse effects. He highlighted that business activity is already sluggish and the business community is struggling to stay afloat. Imposing further tax burdens on existing taxpayers could lead to decreased revenue collection as it would open more avenues for tax evasion. He also expressed concerns over amendments introduced through Ordinance IV of 2025, particularly Sections 138(3A), 140(6A), and 175C, stating that these amendments grant excessive powers to tax authorities and violate Articles 4, 18, and 77 of the Constitution. He warned that such changes would significantly erode investor confidence. Paracha proposed the development of a harmonized structure for General Sales Tax (GST), featuring a unified compliance portal. He recommended gradually reducing the GST rate to 12% to lower business costs for the formal sector and stimulates economic growth. He also called for comprehensive reforms in Pakistan Customs, identifying outdated laws, tariff segmentation, under-invoicing, and weak enforcement as major challenges. He underscored the need for economic policy to strike a balance between revenue requirements and industrial development, especially through measures that boost Pakistan's export potential and attract investors. Finally, Muhammad Amaan Paracha appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to immediately release the long-pending Rs23 billion subsidies related to additional electricity consumption and ensure that funds for this are allocated in the upcoming 2025-26 federal budget. Murad urges youth to contribute to investment and defence

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has urged the youth to contribute to national investment and defence, saying during the recent conflict with India, the power of the people combined with technology played a vital role. Speaking at the Sindh Startups Exhibition, organised by the Sindh Higher Education Commission (HEC) in collaboration with the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), he emphasised for creating bridge between classrooms and boardrooms, and between research and real-world impact. The exhibition featured ideas from students and faculty across Sindh's public and private universities. From the 50 projects presented in the moot, five outstanding entries were selected by industry leaders based on their potential for scaling, adoption, and industrialisation. Each winning team will receive a cash award of Rs0.5million. The chief minister lauded the Sindh HEC for its vision and commitment to strengthening higher education, noting a shift from routine learning to real innovation and collaboration. He urged all Vice Chancellors and university leaders to draw inspiration from this initiative and leverage their Offices of Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (ORICs) to cultivate a local culture of invention, entrepreneurship, and applied research. He said that his government is vigorously promoting higher education. The province allocates the highest development budget for universities, amounting to Rs35 billion, with an additional Rs8 billion for development portfolios. 'This funding surpasses the combined allocations of the other three provinces and the federal government,' he said. He stressed the importance of universities producing not just graduates, but "innovators, creators, and problem-solvers," and developing platforms for student and faculty engagement with industry. This, he said, will steer universities towards self-sustainability, reducing dependency on government funding. Chairman Sindh HEC Dr Tariq Rafi highlighted this exhibition as the fourth major collaborative initiative between Sindh HEC and FPCCI. Previous efforts included the Sindh Research Support Program and events spotlighting university-based inventions, all aimed at delivering local solutions to local industries and moving universities towards greater self-reliance. Dr Rafi underscored the critical interdependence of industry and academia, stating, "Around the world, the most advanced industrial ecosystems owe their success to the breakthroughs, insights, and talent emerging from their universities." Chairman CIEC, Sindh HEC, Dr Sarosh Lodhi envisioned a future where ORICs function as "active launch pads for ideas" and encouraged more institutions to host local innovation showcases and campus-industry dialogues. President FPCCI Atif Shaikh also spoke. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
