Samsung scores a win in Galaxy S22 throttling saga, but it still deceived customers
Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR A Korean court has ruled that Samsung wasn't liable for damages after it throttled Galaxy S22 phones. However, the court acknowledged that Samsung engaged in 'deceptive labeling and advertising that was likely to mislead consumers.' Samsung throttled S22 phones out of the box back in 2022 and didn't let users disable this functionality at first. Samsung made headlines for all the wrong reasons in early 2022 when it turned out that the company was throttling its Galaxy S22 phones as part of its Game Optimizing Service (GOS) software. Now, a Korean court has largely ruled in Samsung's favor in a class-action lawsuit. A Seoul court found (via Yonhap News) that Samsung engaged in 'deceptive labeling and advertising that was likely to mislead consumers' by throttling the gaming performance of Galaxy S22 series phones. However, the court also ruled that Samsung wasn't liable for damages as plaintiffs presented 'insufficient evidence' to prove damages. According to ZDNet Korea, the court also said there were no restrictions on the S22 line's general performance, adding that the throttling only applied to some 'high-spec' games. Therefore, the court found it difficult to see this throttling as a factor that 'significantly' influences the purchasing decisions of general customers. The class-action lawsuit was filed by a group of just over 1,800 smartphone owners who claimed damages of 300,000 won (~$221) per person. Samsung used its GOS software to throttle Galaxy S22 phones in a bid to reduce heating when playing games. This throttling also applied to previous Galaxy phones, but Samsung made it mandatory on the Galaxy S22 devices and didn't disclose this fact at first. What was also particularly controversial was that this throttling applied to games but didn't apply to benchmark apps. The company would later release an update that allowed users to reduce this throttling. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . Moto Tag finally gets precise UWB location tracking
Promised way back in June 2024, the Moto Tag location tracker is finally rolling out UWB support via a firmware update. That makes it the first tracker on Google's Find Hub network to support ultra-wideband tracking, which is superior to Bluetooth since it uses distance and directional arrows to guide owners with compatible phones to their lost tags. To update your Moto Tag you'll need the 01.00.073.10-release of the Moto Tag app from the Play Store. You can then apply the 2.0.93 firmware with UWB support. You'll also need a modern Android phone that supports UWB, which includes newer Galaxy and Pixel flagships. We can't blame Motorola for the delay here, since Google's Find Hub location network (previously called Find My Device) only recently lit up with UWB support. Samsung's network for its SmartTags has supported UWB since launch in 2020, while Apple's network for AirTags has supported it since launch in 2021. My colleague Dom recently put Google's location tracking network to the test, pitting a number of trackers, including the Moto Tag and Apple AirTag, against each other. It's worth a read to understand the tradeoffs in privacy and precision.

Breaking: One UI 8 beta 2 starts rolling out for the Galaxy S25 series
Joe Maring / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung has begun rolling out the first One UI 8 beta, starting with the Galaxy S25 series. Surprisingly, the first beta is available in its home region of South Korea and the US, UK, and Germany. Users interested in the beta program must sign up through the Samsung Members app. Samsung released the first One UI 8 beta late last month for Galaxy S25 devices, giving users a glimpse of what's coming with their Android 16 update. Now that Google has also released stable Android 16, Samsung has gone ahead and released One UI 8 beta 2 to users. The second One UI 8 beta build for the Galaxy S25 series (h/t Tarun Vats) is 1.2GB in size over the first update, and has the version number S938NKSU4ZYF3/ S938NOKR4ZYF3/S938NKSU4BYF3, depending on the region. This update is rolling out to users in South Korea. We're also seeing reports that users in India can now enroll in the beta program. However, we aren't yet seeing reports from users in the US, UK, and Germany for this update, though we reckon they will also receive the update very soon as they were part of the first wave of releases. To enroll in the One UI 8 beta program on your Galaxy S25 series, you will need to download the Samsung Members app, sign in with your Samsung Account. If you are in an eligible region, you will see a One UI 8 Beta Program banner on the home page, which you need to click on and complete your registration. Once done, you can check for an impending update at Settings > Software update > Download and Install. Download the update and let us know your thoughts about the changes coming with Samsung's hottest new software release! Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ .
