The silent warrior: Odei Onaindia leaves FC Goa with a lasting imprint

India Gazette12-07-2025
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): Football often celebrates the flamboyant. The scorers, the playmakers, the dramatic match winners. But sometimes, it's the quiet figures at the back, the ones holding the structure together, who make the lasting difference.
Odei Onaindia was one such figure at FC Goa (FCG). The Spaniard brought calm and stability to a team that twice came close to the Shield under his watch, as per the Indian Super League (ISL) press release.
His two seasons may not have ended without any league silverware, but his influence was unmistakable, both as a centre-back and as captain.
Onaindia joined the Gaurs ahead of the 2023-24 season, following head coach Manolo Marquez from Hyderabad FC. For most players, a club switch requires a period of adjustment with a new system, new teammates and a new environment. But for Onaindia, the transition was seamless. Reunited with a tactical setup he already understood, he slotted in instantly.
Even his experienced centre-back partner Jhingan was sidelined midway through the 2023-24 season, FC Goa could have crumbled. But Onaindia remained unmoved. He adapted to a new defensive partner in Nim Dorjee and the backline didn't miss a beat as the team made it to the playoffs after two seasons.
Eight of the team's nine clean sheets in the 2023-24 season came with him on the pitch. The Gaurs finished third in the regular season, their best finish in four years. This was after they spent the most days at the top of the table in that campaign. But their run ended in the semi-finals against Mumbai City FC, a tie where they had once led 2-0 in the first leg before eventually falling to a comeback defeat.
Onaindia captained the Gaurs on a few occasions in 2023-24 but when the following season began, he led the side after the departure of Brandon Fernandes, the press release added.
The results reflected that leadership. FC Goa finished second in the league table, bettering their points tally from the season before. They ended with 48 points, the same as 2023-24 Shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Once again, their run ended in the semi-finals, this time against Bengaluru FC, who edged the Gaurs on aggregate thanks to a last-gasp goal despite a second-leg win for FC Goa.
But throughout the season, Onaindia continued to lead the backline with composure and clarity, playing a key role in the team's defensive setup while mentoring younger players within the squad.
Partnering with Jhingan over two seasons, Onaindia formed one of the most disciplined defensive duos in the league. The two brought out the best in each other. Jhingan with his aggression and leadership, and Onaindia with his positioning and composure.
Together, they were almost unbeatable. Across 28 league matches in which both started, FC Goa lost only three times. They also kept 13 clean sheets in that period.
For two campaigns, Odei Onaindia brought consistency and calmness to the team's backline, contributing to two top-three finishes in the league and successive semi-final appearances.
He may not have made headlines often, but his presence was felt every time he stepped onto the pitch, serving a reminder that not all leaders need to be loud to be effective. (ANI)

You asked, I delivered: Sirajs subtle reply to Steyns prediction, thanks Virat 'bhaiya' for believing in him

London [UK], August 4 (ANI): Pace spearhead Mohammed Siraj gave heartwarming replies to India batting mainstay Virat Kohli and the former South Africa tearaway Dale Steyn after he inspired India to a victory for the ages against England at The Oval. Siraj breathed fire, chained England batters with his sharp nipping deliveries and cast a spell to steer India past the finish line with a narrow six-run triumph. After the weather gods intervened to force a premature foreclosure of the fourth day, Siraj and the rest of the Indian team had enough time to recharge their depleted batteries. In the opening hour of the morning session, Siraj bowled in tandem with Prasidh Krishna and charged at English batters under London's gloomy sky and slight drizzle. England stood 35 runs away from victory with four wickets to spare. Siraj and Krishna spoiled the party with their blistering pace and notched up 140kph to leave England in shambles during their pursuit of a 374-run target. Before the beginning of the Test, Steyn had prophesied a five-wicket haul for Siraj on the Oval's green strip. In the first innings, Siraj fell one scalp shy and settled for a four-wicket haul. However, in his second outing, the stars aligned in favour of the 31-year-old. He hammered the final nail in the coffin by rattling Gus Atkinson's timber to wrap up a five-for and a six-run victory for his side, returning with figures of 9/190. Hours after India's victory, Siraj took to X and replied to Steyn's post, which read, "You asked. I delivered. Really appreciate coming from you." Virat, who has groomed Siraj into one of the finest modern-day Test bowlers, penned a heartfelt note for the 31-year-old and wrote on X, "Great win by team india. Resilience and determination from Siraj and Prasidh has given us this phenomenal victory. Special mention to Siraj who will put everything on the line for the team. Extremely happy for him." Siraj gave a subtle reply and wrote, "Thank you bhaiya for "Believe" ing in me." Siraj redefined the concept of workload management, bowled his heart out across the five Tests and concluded the series as the leading wicket-taker. Siraj's determination and perseverance resonated in the 1113 deliveries he bowled in five Tests to scalp 23 wickets at 32.43. (ANI)

England head coach McCullum lauds 'once-in-a-generation' cricketer Ben Stokes

London [UK], August 4 (ANI): Head coach Brendon McCullum had special words of praise in store for "once-in-a-generation" cricketer Ben Stokes and remains assured that the England skipper will give his all against their arch-rival Australia in the highly anticipated Ashes. England had plenty of positives to take away from the testing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy that ended in a 2-2 draw. Before being ruled out of the fifth Test, Stokes led from the front and set an example for his side, a blend of experience and raw talent. He bowled 140 overs, his most he has bowled in a Test series. Before the nerve-wracking series finale, Stokes was the leading wicket-taker for his side with a whopping 17 scalps to his name at 25.23. His efforts weren't limited to the bowling front. After initially struggling to find his mojo, Stokes rediscovered his form with a scintillating 141(191) during the fourth Test in Manchester. With Stokes firing all cylinders, McCullum was in awe of the experienced all-rounder. "Stokes is a once-in-a-generation cricketer. He makes things happen with bat in hand, he has the most Test sixes, and he absorbs pressure better than anyone I have ever seen. Obviously, he is an inspirational captain who the guys follow. He is always looking how to advance the game and transfer pressure onto the opposition," McCullum said while speaking to Sky Sports. Stokes took himself to dark places after elongating his spells in London and Manchester. He even bowled 10-over spells at Lord's to inspire the Three Lions to a famous 22-run victory. The unrelenting spells took a toll on his body, and he was ruled out of the contest due to a right shoulder muscle injury. The injury served as a massive setback, considering he returned to the on-field action after a long spell on the sidelines. McCullum believes the injury setbacks are a part and parcel of the game, but Stokes' return to form is an ominous sign for the team. "Through force of will, he is able to get things to work, and sometimes that means he has to bowl long periods or has to take himself to dark places. You can't have one without the other, and sometimes that does lead to injuries, and that is just part and parcel of it. I would never want him to change. He will leave it all out there in Australia," he said. (ANI)

'Supermen from India': Sachin Tendulkar lauds Team Indias victory at The Oval

New Delhi [India], August 4 (ANI): India's legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar hailed Team India's exceptional performance in The Oval Test against England and labelled the Shubman Gill-led squad as "Supermen" from India. In an absolute humdinger of a contest, inspirational spells from Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna helped India draw the five-match series against England, denying the hosts a series win, beating them by six runs while defending 374 runs, in an absolute thriller at The Oval on Monday. With this win, the Shubman Gill-led Team India has started the new era with immense promise, drawing the series 2-2. Taking to X, Tendulkar wrote, "Test cricket... absolute goosebumps. Series 2-2, Performance 10/10! SUPERMEN from INDIA! What a Win." Siraj's inspirational spell during the fifth and final Test was perhaps the biggest reason why Team India left the England shores with their heads held high and the series scoreline. He took a total of 23 wickets in the series at an average of 32.43, with best figures of 6/70. In the final Test, he took a total of nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings. While defending 374, India was in trouble with England at 301/3 at one point, but along with Prasidh Krishna, Siraj bowled relentlessly, pulling back the match ball by ball, wicket by wicket. India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav hailed his team's victory, where he said, "What a solid show, boys! Love watching this team fight and finish strong till the very end." Former India skipper Ajinkya Rahane also shared his thoughts on Team India's memorable victory at The Oval. "Test cricket doesn't get better than this. Tense finish, pressure moments, and character on display. Well done @BCCI," Rahane said. Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara called India's win over England at The Oval "historic". Historic win! Belief and character shown by the team was brilliant to see! Fitting end to what has been an incredible series. Nothing quite like Test Cricket!" Pujara wrote on X. Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly took to his social media handle and shared his views on the victory. "What a test match .. India will leave Lords very disappointed .. they played so well all 3 test matches. But down 2-1 ..it was a test match to be won.. Jadeja fought hard and showed 193 was not a big total .. @bcci @Teamindiacrick," Ganguly said. Former India spinner Anil Kumble congratulated the Indian team for winning The Oval Test. "Well played India!! What a series... #INDvsEND Well done to everyone involved from both teams. Stunning performance today by @mdsirajofficial and @prasidh43 to hold their nerves. Congratulations @ShubmanGill and the team for a great series!" Kumble wrote. Former South Africa seamer Dale Steyn shared after India's victory, where he said, "WE LOVE TEST CRICKET." Former England seamer Steven Finn congratulated both teams for playing such a brilliant series. "Oh my word. What a finish to an incredible test series. Well done to both teams. That was insane," Finn said. Coming to the match, after England opted to bowl first, they reduced India to 153/6. A 58-run partnership between Karun Nair (57 in 109 balls, with eight fours) and Washington Sundar (26 in 55 balls, with three fours) was the most meaningful part of the inning as India was bundled out for 224 runs. Apart from Gus Atkinson's five-wicket haul, Josh Tongue (3/57) was also good. In the second innings, four-fers from Siraj (4/86) and Prasidh Krishna (4/62) reduced England to 247, despite a 92-run opening stand between Zak Crawley (64 in 57 balls, with 14 fours) and Ben Duckett (43 in 38 balls, with five fours and two sixes) and a fifty by Harry Brook (53 in 64 balls, with five fours and a six). They led by 23 runs. In India's second innings, key contributions came from Yashasvi Jaiswal (118 in 164 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes), Akash Deep (66 in 94 balls, with 12 fours), Ravindra Jadeja (53 in 77 balls, with five fours) and Washington Sundar (53 in 46 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes). Sundar stitched a very crucial 10th wicket stand with Krishna, with the latter scoring nothing out of it and Sundar doing all the hitting. They all took India to 396 runs, giving them a 373-run lead and setting a target of 374 runs for England to win the series. India started well, reducing England to 106/3. However, fine centuries from Harry Brook (111 in 98 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes) and Joe Root (105 in 152 balls, with 12 fours) troubled India with a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket. At one point, England was 317/4 on day four. However, a late surge by Siraj (5/104) and Krishna (4/126) shifted the pressure to England, and they were left six runs short, bundled out for 367 runs. The series is drawn 2-2, reflecting the true nature of how well-fought the series was. The Shubman Gill era has started with immense promise and fight, giving signs of a bright future. (ANI)
