Top cycling talent, 19, dies in 43mph mid-race crash: Investigation opened into why he lost his helmet before hitting a gate on downhill descent
The 19-year-old crashed 35 kilometres from the end of the first stage of the annual race, which takes place in the Aosta Valley region of Italy.
Italian website Tuttobiciweb reported that Privitera, who was part of the Hagens Berman Jayco team, is understood to have crashed while descending at around 43mph.
The Italian was reported to have suffered a severe head injury after hitting a gate in the fall, with the injury leading to a cardiac arrest. Privitera had reportedly lost his helmet before hitting the gate.
Despite being resuscitated at the scene and taken to Parini Hospital in Aosta, Privitera passed away on Wednesday evening.
Organsiers have confirmed and investigation has been launched into the circumstances around the crash.

'Società Ciclistica Valdostana is saddened by the passing of Samuele Privitera, the rider crashed today during the first stage of the Giro della Valle d'Aosta in the municipality of Pontey,' a statement read.
'Promptly assisted by the medical services following the race, he was taken to the Ospedale Parini in Aosta, where he sadly passed away. The circumstances of the accident are still unclear and are being investigated by public safety authorities.'
Race organisers confirmed the second stage of the race has been cancelled, with the event set to resume on Friday.
The stage will be preceded by a moment of silence for Privitera with the initial section of the race neutralised in his memory. Teams will be able to choose whether they continue in the race or withdraw following the tragedy.
Axel Merckx, the owner and team manager of Hagens Berman Jayco, paid tribute to Privitera and stated that his loss is 'devastating beyond words'.
'It is with a very heavy heart that I share news no one in our community ever wanted to hear. Our rider, our teammate, and our dear friend, Samuele Privitera, has passed away following the race at Giro Val d'Aosta,' Merckx said.
'Samuele was and always will be the life and personality of this team. This team has always been a small family, and moments like this are unimaginable. He was irreplaceable.
'His joy, his spirit, his kindness, was always a bright light to whatever room or race that he was in at that moment. To lose him is devastating beyond words.
The UCI is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Under-23 cyclist Samuele Privitera.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and everyone who supported him. Samuele's loss is felt across the cycling community.

'Personally, I am struggling to express the sadness I feel but I am deeply grateful for every moment we shared with him and for the joy he brought to our team every single day. He loved the bike, he loved the camera, he loved to smile, he loved to laugh, but most of all he loved his family and his teammates.
'Please keep Samuele's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate the days ahead. On behalf of everyone at Hagens Berman Jayco, thank you for standing with us and honoring Samuele's memory.
'Rest in peace, Samuele. You will always be part of this team.'
The International Cycling Union joined tributes for Privitera, writing 'The UCI is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Under-23 cyclist Samuele Privitera.
'Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and everyone who supported him. Samuele's loss is felt across the cycling community.'
Sir Bradley Wiggins and Tadej Pogacar are among those to have offered their condolences following the tragedy.

It was a pleasure to take part in the Mic Morris Torfaen 10k again
It was a pleasure to run alongside a thousand other runners again this year, despite a rather warm day adding to the physical challenge! So many of my fellow runners told me how much they enjoyed the beautiful route down our valley, starting in my hometown of Blaenavon and finishing in wonderful Pontypool Park. A huge thank you to the organisers, volunteers and everyone who lined the route and cheered us on. The encouragement always gives runners some extra determination to keep going. It's been good to see other events in Pontypool Park this summer too, and I look forward to the cycling Tour of Britain starting in the park and finishing above Blaenavon on September 6. It's a huge honour to have the premier professional cycling race in Britain come to Torfaen. I look forward to welcoming cycling fans and to helping promote our area. It's also a chance for us to say a local thank you to Welsh legend Geraint Thomas, who'll be riding his last race before retiring after a long and hugely successful career. In an earlier Argus column, I committed to organising an apprenticeship fair in Torfaen, and was delighted to deliver this alongside employers, schools and training providers. Thank you to Coleg Gwent for hosting the fair, to the organisations who attended and to the local high schools who turned up with pupils. Pupils spoke to more than 20 employers and training providers about opportunities, including Torfaen companies like Pro Steel Engineering and GOS Tool and Engineering Services. Apprenticeships provide valuable skills and build the foundations of successful careers, yet sometimes young people don't know what the options are for them. I hope I can repeat and build on this successful event next year. I was delighted to hear from Huw Irranca-Davies that Welsh Government are putting aside £5 million to help safeguard our historic canal. I want to pay tribute to local groups like Bridge 46 to Five Locks, who've campaigned so hard alongside the Canal and River Trust, Lynne Neagle MS, Torfaen councillors and myself to try to resolve the water supply issues. Hopefully now we can secure a sustainable future for the canal. Local groups like Bridge 46 to Five Locks are taking massive strides to help improve the Mon and Brec, volunteering and lobbying to promote the importance of the canal. What strikes me is how many different people use the canal and towpath for so many activities, from boating to paddleboarding to walking dogs, keeping fit by running or walking or just getting outside to enjoy their local environment. Long may it continue. I was pleased to visit local business Wiltan this week. It is a leading manufacturer and supplier of strip wound cores in electrical steels and cut laminations, and sells its products across international markets. Like many Torfaen businesses, it has a great reputation for what it does. It was good to talk with the business about how we can support it to export. Mom claims toddler accidentally broke cafe's $1.6K table and she couldn't leave without giving credit card
A mom has sparked fierce fury online after she claimed that her toddler accidentally broke a cafe's $1,600 table and she was told she couldn't leave without handing over her credit card. Kathy Denman was visiting Hazelnut Cafe in Lavallette, New Jersey, with her three-year-old daughter and 76-year-old mom when an unfortunately mishap lead to one of the eatery's marble tables smashing. Video footage of the moment showed the toddler sitting on her grandmother's lap when she pushed on the table in an attempt to slide it away from her. Suddenly, it toppled over and broke as it hit the ground. Kathy explained in a now-viral TikTok video about the ordeal that she was at the register paying for their coffees when the incident occurred. 'I heard a loud bang. The table, which I later learned was 600 pounds, broke into a bunch of pieces. It was a stone table,' she shared. She said she immediately apologized to workers and asked, 'What could we do to make this right?' But she said things 'went down in a way she never could have anticipated or expected.' 'Everyone had mean girl vibes. I understand they were upset, I completely get it. I was ready to pay for the damages, that wasn't an issue,' Kathy said. 'When the owner got on the phone I said, "Oh my God I'm so sorry we're so embarrassed," and the owner said, "Well, the table is almost $2,000, it's $1,600 so you can't leave until I have your license and a credit card."' Kathy explained that her priority was making sure her daughter was OK, as the youngster seemed completely terrified. She wanted to go get her checked out by a medical professional, and asked if she could leave her contact information so they could send her a bill. But Kathy claimed that the owner refused and said she couldn't leave without giving them a credit card and a photo of her license. In response, the cafe has said that it never 'held anyone against their will' and that Kathy was not charged for the table. 'I said, "Well I have to leave to make sure my daughter's OK, she's surrounded by 50 people now, she's three, and I want to make sure my kid's alright,"' alleged Kathy. '"Let me go get her checked out and make sure she didn't get hurt. Bits and pieces of this table broke off into a million directions, let me just catch my breath and make sure she's OK." 'I gave all my contact information, my email, my husband's information, our cell phone numbers, but I wasn't allowed to leave.' Kathy claimed the owner kept telling her that their policy is 'you break it you pay for it,' and continuously reminded her that they had 'everything on video.' 'I gave you all my contact information so that I can make it right for you guys and your business. So for you to keep repeating that everything's on video, I'm not disputing that my kid pushed your table,' Kathy continued, addressing the owner in the TikTok video. She added, 'I was so surprised because not one time on the phone did [the owner] ask if [my daughter] was OK or if anybody got hurt. I was completely humiliated and embarrassed.' It's unclear whether or not Kathy gave her credit card in the end. In a statement shared to Instagram afterwards, the eatery said it was 'grateful' that Kathy, her daughter, mother, and everyone else in the coffee shop at the time were unharmed. 'We understand this incident may have been startling when the table fell with a loud noise, and our priority has been to ensure the family felt supported and cared for,' it wrote. 'Following the incident, we personally called the child's mother to express our concern, offer our support, and share our direct contact information should she need anything.' It said that as an 'added precaution' it has since removed all tables from its locations to 'eliminate any risk' of a similar incident. 'We want to be completely transparent: We would never hold anyone against their will,' it added. 'The mother was not charged for the damaged table, even after asking how she could make it right given the table broke. We requested her contact information for insurance purposes.' It vowed that 'safety and hospitality' are the 'foundation of everything Hazel Cafe does' and described it as an 'unfortunate and rare occurrence.' In her TikTok, Kathy immediately took her daughter to Urgent Care because she said the toddler still seemed 'frozen,' and was told by a doctor that her daughter was probably in 'a state of shock.' 'It was so loud, can you imagine a solid stone table dropping to the ground?' she added. In a follow-up video, Kathy pointed out that the table, Anthropologie's Kanta Rectangular 48-inch Marble Console, which retails for $1,598, only has two legs, which makes it more prone to falling than tables with four legs. 'Crafted of pure marble, this stately console lends a classical element to studies and living rooms alike,' reads a description of the table. Kathy's original video about the situation raked in more than 13.3 million views and sparked an immense reaction from people all across the globe, many of whom took her side and brutally slammed the cafe. In one last post, however, Kathy stated that the cafe had 'reached out and apologized' for how 'her family was treated,' adding, 'We have accepted their apology and are satisfied.'

Redditch man drowns at Nuneaton beauty spot
A man has drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming at a Warwickshire beauty Berlan, from Redditch in Worcestershire, was swimming in Ensor's Pool in Nuneaton on Sunday afternoon, Warwickshire Police crews were called at about 12:30 BST to reports that the the 27-year-old man had disappeared in the water and not resurfaced for five was pulled from the water but confirmed dead at the scene at about 13:30, police said. The force is continuing to investigate on behalf of the Berlan's next of kin have been informed, a police spokesperson added, and anyone who was there at the time is asked to contact pool, in the south-west area of the town, is a former clay pit that served a nearby colliery and brick works and is now a site of special scientific interest.
