Italian rider Privitera, 19, dies after crash in Giro della Valle d'Aosta
Italian cyclist Samuele Privitera, 19, died following a crash during the opening stage of the Giro della Valle d'Aosta, his team Hagens Berman Jayco confirmed late on Wednesday. This team has always been a small family, and moments like this are unimaginable," Axel Merckx, owner of Hagens Berman Jayco, said in a statement. The second stage of the race, which takes place in northern Italy's Aosta Valley near the French border, has been cancelled. "The stage goes to him and his family. It's the first thing I read in the morning," Tour de France overall leader Tadej Pogacar said after winning the race's 12th stage on Thursday. "I was thinking of him in the last kilometre."

GreenEDGE Cycling said the entire organisation was mourning the loss of 'such an incredible, talented rider'. 'Samuele was taken far too young, doing something he was truly passionate about and will always be remembered.' The second stage of the race, which takes place in northern Italy's Aosta Valley near the French border, has been cancelled. The third stage will take place as scheduled on 18 July from Pré Saint Didier to Col du Gran San Bernardo. It will be preceded by a moment of silence, organisers said. 'All formal ceremonies are cancelled until the end of the event. 'The organising committee is giving teams the freedom to decide whether to continue the race starting with the third stage.'

Top cycling talent, 19, dies in 43mph mid-race crash: Investigation opened into why he lost his helmet before hitting a gate on downhill descent
An investigation has been opened into the death of teenage cyclist Samuele Privitera at the Giro della Valle d'Aosta on Wednesday. The 19-year-old crashed 35 kilometres from the end of the first stage of the annual race, which takes place in the Aosta Valley region of Italy. Italian website Tuttobiciweb reported that Privitera, who was part of the Hagens Berman Jayco team, is understood to have crashed while descending at around 43mph. The Italian was reported to have suffered a severe head injury after hitting a gate in the fall, with the injury leading to a cardiac arrest. Privitera had reportedly lost his helmet before hitting the gate. Despite being resuscitated at the scene and taken to Parini Hospital in Aosta, Privitera passed away on Wednesday evening. Organsiers have confirmed and investigation has been launched into the circumstances around the crash. The circumstances of the accident are still unclear and are being investigated by public safety authorities.' Race organisers confirmed the second stage of the race has been cancelled, with the event set to resume on Friday. The stage will be preceded by a moment of silence for Privitera with the initial section of the race neutralised in his memory. Teams will be able to choose whether they continue in the race or withdraw following the tragedy.
