Two days of heavy rain lead to breakdown of 150 PMPML buses
"There were 61 breakdowns on May 19 and 89 on May 20. However, it is less compared to breakdowns on July 24 and 25, last year. The reasons are rain and its after-effects," public relations officer of the transport body Kishore Chauhan told TOI.
"I was travelling in a bus from Pune Municipal Corporation building towards the Raja Bahadur Mills Road around 6pm. The bus stopped suddenly and the driver said it wouldn't go further because a tyre had a puncture.
All passengers struggled till another PMPML bus arrived. Many who got off were drenched while they looked for other means of transport," said Parag Seere, a daily commuter.
On Wednesday morning,
PMPML CMD Deepa Mudhol Munde
was in a PMPML bus which broke down at Pulgate. Munde was travelling from Shevalwadi to Kothrud on a new CNG bus belonging to a private contractor in a bid to interact with passengers. She had to switch to her car.
Meanwhile, in the two days of July, last year, PMPML had recorded 233 breakdowns.
On July 24, the number stood at 105 and 128 on July 25. On any regular day, daily breakdowns are between 48 and 50, officials said.
"On Tuesday, we tried to control the breakdowns, but it was raining very heavily. Water entered the electrical circuits of many buses, while others faced the problem of punctured tyres. Vehicles operated by private contractors witnessed far more faults than those owned by PMPML. Only 19 PMPML-owned buses suffered breakdowns on May 20 and 17 on May 19. Rental buses, including e-buses, were stuck in major traffic jams on practically all roads in the evenings.
We are talking to contractors and directing them to do all maintenance required for buses to operate without problems," a senior PMPML official said.

Vehicle fitness certification on pause at Dharwad West RTO; owners forced to move to other centres
Hubballi: Dharwad West RTO is currently hobbled with a defunct vehicle fitness testing device. According to RTO officials, the machine is currently not accepting fees for issuing fitness certificates. The worst affected are owners of commercial vehicles. They are now being forced to visit Haveri, Gadag, and Dandeli RTO offices to obtain fitness certificates issued manually. The irony is certainly not lost on anyone as though the machine is out of order, RTO officials are allegedly still imposing a fine on vehicle owners who are yet to renew their vehicle fitness certificates. Babanna, a school bus driver who frequently visits Dharwad West RTO, told TOI: "Consultants and staffers (at the RTO) are saying that the govt itself has stopped allowing clearances to transport vehicles." Many have demanded that the system of issuing vehicle fitness certificates must be unified. "The govt installed inspection and certification (I and C) centres in six districts, but these are all defunct since March. According to rules, we must pay the fees online, but I and C centres are not generating receipts for the fees paid. Hence, it's difficult to get a test or an inspection report issued," some vehicle owners said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Making matters weorse, manual fee payment has been stopped, they said. Under the circumstances, certification agencies are advising their clients to approach smaller districts such as Gadag and Haveri to get the fitness certificates renewed for transport vehicles. Sources in NWKRTC said: "As we follow the norms of I and C centres, we are waiting for the fitness certificates of transport vehicles." Srikant Badiger, RTO, Dharwad West, said I and C centres are located in six places in the state. "These have been blocked by the Union govt. However, we have changed the procedure of issuing fitness certificates to optimise our services," he stated. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Autorickshaws in Mangaluru to get QR codes soon
Mangaluru: The Karnataka Drivers Union has submitted a proposal to the Mangaluru City Traffic Police to develop QR codes for autorickshaws operating in Mangaluru. The purpose of creating a database and QR codes is to prevent the misuse of zones allotted to the autorickshaws in Mangaluru. While there are 7,637 autorickshaws in zone 1 of Mangaluru city, zone 2 of Mangaluru rural has 6,949 vehicles. As per the zone rules introduced in 2006, zone 2 autorickshaws are not allowed to enter the city. The union members are working on developing QR codes for all rural autorickshaws to prevent misuse of zone rules. Ganesh R Shaktinagar told TOI that the union noticed zone rule violations by autorickshaws, especially zone 2 vehicles operating in Mangaluru city. "We noticed many autorickshaws, which were given the zone 2 stickers to operate in rural areas of Mangaluru, using the duplicate stickers of zone 1 to operate in the urban areas. Further, there are autorickshaws that have no documents operating in Mangaluru city limits. These duplicate autorickshaws have been causing serious issues. Hence, to prevent the menace of duplicate autorickshaws, including the duplication of zone stickers, the union developed software with QR codes for vehicles," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Launch your PM career IITD PM Apply Now Undo Ganesh said that a memorandum in this regard was also submitted to deputy commissioner Darshan HV, who is also the Road Transport Authority (RTA) chairman. "We explained in detail the problems that arise due to the duplicate autorickshaw menace in the city to the DC. A memorandum was submitted to Mangaluru City Traffic police a few days ago, and the issue will also be discussed at the RTA meeting to be chaired by the DC on Aug 18," he said. He pointed out that middlemen reportedly misused the zone 1 stickers issued by Mangaluru City Traffic police. "As per our proposal, once the QR codes pasted on autorickshaws are scanned, data from the police record about its zone and ownership, as well as other details, can be accessed," he said. The district RTA stopped issuing permits for autorickshaws in Mangaluru city after 1997-98. Later, only for the purpose of govt schemes, permits were issued in 2014. Meanwhile, electric autorickshaws are allowed to operate without permits, but the next RTA meeting will discuss a recent govt order that made permits mandatory for electric autorickshaws too.
