M'sia to host Witex and WCAF 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to host the World Islamic Tourism & Trade Expo (WITEX 2025) and the inaugural World Cultural & Arts Festival (WCAF 2025) from Aug 22 to 24 at Sunway Resort Hotel, Bandar Sunway, showcasing a vibrant convergence of Islamic tourism, global trade, culture and the arts.
Organised by the Malaysia Tourism Agency Association (MATA), WITEX 2025 marks the third edition of what was formerly known as the Asia Islamic Tourism & Trade Expo (AITEX), now rebranded to reflect the exponential growth of Islamic tourism and global trade under a new global identity.
In a statement released today, MATA said the event promises to be even more dynamic with over 150 booths and robust participation from Islamic and non-Islamic countries, Asean, BRICS member states and the international tourism industry.
"With the theme Empowering the Future of Islamic Tourism and Trade through Culture and Innovation, WITEX 2025 and WCAF 2025 will bring together government officials, tourism stakeholders, investors and the public in a multi-dimensional platform aimed at fostering trade, investment and intercultural engagement.
"Admission is free to the public, with the expo running daily from 10am to 8pm," it said.
WITEX 2025 will feature several high-profile segments aimed at boosting international tourism investment and cross-cultural collaboration, including the World Islamic Tourism Conference (Aug 22-23), Ministers & CEOs Summit (Aug 24), Tourism Investment Asia (a key highlight of WITEX 2025, specialised segment designed to attract investment into Islamic tourism projects across Asia, the Middle East and Africa) and B2B Trade Networking Sessions.
Running alongside the business-focused components, WITEX and WCAF will offer a vibrant cultural programme for the general public, including the national pavilion and cultural shows, halal travel and tour deals, as well as lucky draws and airline vouchers.
"Capping off the week is the World Islamic Tourism and Trade Awards (WITA 2025), a prestigious black-tie gala honouring excellence in Islamic tourism, trade and cultural diplomacy.
"To be held at the Grand Ballroom of Sunway Resort Hotel on Aug 25, the awards will recognise outstanding agencies, corporations and leaders with over 30 accolades, complemented by musical performances and the Combo Orchestra."
Meanwhile, MATA president Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khalid Harun said WITEX 2025 is more than just an exhibition - it is a global bridge of trade and trust.
"It reflects Malaysia's leadership in the Islamic tourism economy and showcases our readiness to welcome the world ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026," he said.
WITEX 2025 and WCAF 2025 are officially aligned with the state's Visit Selangor Year 2025 and are a build-up to the national Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
The expo is supported by the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Selangor Tourism, Etiqa Takaful, Batik Air Malaysia and Housecoff.

Tunku Azizah launches book on dual legal system governing Islamic finance

KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah today graced the launch of the book, From Shariah to Statute: Legal and Regulatory Framework of Islamic Finance in Malaysia, which provides a comprehensive overview of Malaysia's unique dual legal system governing the Islamic finance sector. The book launch was held in conjunction with the professorial lecture delivered by Prof Datin Dr Nurdianawati Irwani Abdullah, a finance lecturer at the International Islamic University Malaysia's (IIUM) Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences. Tunku Azizah's arrival, as the Constitutional Head of the university, was warmly received by IIUM Rector Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Osman Bakar and Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. The book, From Shariah to Statute: Legal and Regulatory Framework of Islamic Finance in Malaysia, explains the relationship between Syariah principles and statutory laws, highlighting the roles of key regulatory authorities, core legislations, and institutional mechanisms that uphold Syariah compliance, financial integrity, and consumer protection. The book also explores recent regulatory developments, including licensing and supervision of digital Islamic banks and takaful operators, alongside Malaysia's ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, innovation, and legal harmonisation within the Islamic finance ecosystem. Meanwhile, during her lecture titled '1 Malaysian, 1 Takaful Dream: Too Far to Reach?', Nurdianawati highlighted the pressing need for comprehensive health protection amid rising medical inflation, which surged to 12.6 per cent in 2023, more than double the global average, hence putting significant strain on household expenditures. She noted that takaful penetration remains low at around 20 per cent, with over 90 per cent of Malaysians lacking adequate coverage, and more than 85 per cent of small and medium enterprises without suitable protection. At the same time, she said nearly 70 per cent of Malaysians still rely on overcrowded public hospitals, where waiting times can exceed 24 hours, while private healthcare costs continue to rise. In response, Nurdianawati proposed a comprehensive action plan aimed at achieving the national goal of '1 Malaysian, 1 Takaful' by 2026, not merely a vision but a shared social responsibility. 'Achieving '1 Malaysian, 1 Takaful' requires cross-sector collaboration involving government agencies, takaful operators, employers, zakat and waqf bodies, and civil society. This is no longer optional but a social obligation to prevent anyone from falling into poverty due to illness. 'This plan targets increasing takaful penetration to 40 per cent by 2028. With strong commitment and thorough implementation, the dream of ensuring every Malaysian has basic health protection can be realised,' she added. - Bernama

Financial sector crucial for SME growth in strategic industries says BNM

KUALA LUMPUR: The financial sector must actively support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in strategic growth areas to align with Malaysia's national transformation goals, said Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour. Speaking at the CGC 30th Edition Award 2024, he emphasised the need for financial institutions to facilitate SME participation in high-potential industries such as semiconductors, aerospace, and renewable energy. 'These sectors are capital-intensive and technology-driven, often posing entry barriers for smaller businesses,' he noted. Abdul Rasheed outlined three key areas where financial institutions, including Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia (CGC), can contribute. First, unlocking SME opportunities in frontier industries through risk-sharing mechanisms and private capital mobilisation. 'Well-designed programmes with technical expertise can bridge information gaps, giving financial institutions confidence to support SMEs,' he said. Second, he stressed advancing data-driven SME development, citing CGC's shift towards analytical decision-making. 'We must broaden financing access not just for startups but also scalable firms,' he added. Third, he called for sustainable financing solutions, including green and Islamic finance, alongside deeper fintech and ecosystem partnerships. The governor's remarks align with Malaysia's policy frameworks like the New Industrial Master Plan and National Energy Transition Roadmap. 'The financial sector must evolve to support these reforms,' he concluded. - Bernama
