Seven years down the line, Gill is on the cusp of the Indian senior team's allformat captaincy while Shaw, once touted as a 'boy wonder' and the 'next big thing', is trying to make a comeback into the firstclass fold after losing his way.
Question marks over fitness, form and discipline took a huge toll on the opener as he got dropped from the Mumbai Ranji squad last year and went unsold in the IPL-2025 auction. Now he is back in the domestic scene where it all began, this time turning out for Maharashtra. Shaw, who had scored a ton on his India Test debut, announced his comeback in familiar fashion with a well-paced century (111; 141b; 15x4, 1x6) against Chhattisgarh on Day Two of the Buchi Babu tournament here on Tuesday.

'I don't mind starting from scratch again because I've seen many ups and downs in my life. I've been up there and been down there. I've also come back up there. So, everything is possible. I'm confident of myself, my work ethic. And my family has been the biggest support in my tough times. Hopefully, I'll get back there soon,' said Shaw.
During his knock, as he entered the nineties, the right-hander danced down the track to launch a stunning six.
Shaw said he was going back to basics and taking each day as it comes.
'I don't want to change anything. I feel I just went back to basics, doing the things I used to do in my under-19 days, things which got me into the Indian team. I'm just doing all that stuff back again.
'I'm trying to be myself and trying not to be on social media or any of those kinds of distractions. It's kind of peaceful when I'm not using it,' he added.
Shaw has started to get his belief back.
'I feel I have never lost. It's always about learning. Earlier, I was trying to think about the future and I don't think it worked for me. So now what I'm trying to do is go day by day. I try to be in the present. I'm that kind of person right now.'
Asked if he received any messages or calls from the cricket fraternity during his 'tough times', pat came the reply: 'No one.' 'It's fine. I don't want anyone's sympathy. I've had my family's support and my friends who were there with me when I was not really well mentally.
Obviously, people are busy doing their work and they have their family as well. So it didn't bother me at all because I had my family and then I was practising.
'I was in that zone where I was doing everything alone and it was really good for me.' Shaw said he has also been focusing on his fitness in the build-up to the season.
'These two-three months, I had my trainer come personally and train me, and I've got a dietician as well.
'All this over the last threefour months has really changed me physically and mentally. And maybe it can be seen on the field,' said Shaw, who was running briskly between the wickets earlier in the day.

More recently, at a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, India captain Suryakumar Yadav was asked whether his team would participate in the September 14 clash. The Indian media manager swiftly intervened, instructing reporters to restrict questions to team selection. Speaking on the Stick With Cricket podcast, Akram urged calm, stressing the importance of keeping politics away from sport. "Asia Cup schedule is out, there is backlash. But we in Pakistan are calm. We will be fine whether we play or don't play. The game must go on," he said. "Politics apart, I am not a politician. They are patriotic about their country, we are patriotic about ours. Let's not go below the belt. Talk about the triumphs of your country; the same goes for Pakistan, and the same goes for India. It is easier said than done." Akram added that while he respected the sensitivities around the rivalry, he still hoped to see India and Pakistan contest at least one bilateral Test series in his lifetime. The two neighbours have not played a bilateral series since 2012. 'I hope to see a Test series between India and Pakistan in my lifetime.'

Indian team for Asia Cup hockey announced
Harmanpreet Singh will continue to lead the Indian charge as it hopes to win the upcoming Asia Cup and qualify for the World Cup next year with Hardik Singh as his deputy in the 18-member side named by Hockey India on Wednesday (August 20, 2025). Coach Craig Fulton has preferred to keep the juniors away and stick to a tried and tested group high on experience for the Asia Cup. Harshit Rana 'undeserving'; 'extremely ordinary' numbers spark outrage over Asia Cup call: Why didn't BCCI reward Siraj?
The announcement of the Asia Cup squad has raised questions over the All India Selection Committee's decisions. The absence of players like Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna has put Ajit Agarkar and his panel under scrutiny, especially since these names had impressed with their performances in the IPL. Rana had an underwhelming IPL 2025, taking 25 wickets at an economy rate of 10.18. Chopra did point out Rana's match-winning performance as a concussion replacement against England, but he raised concerns over his performances before and after that. It doesn't seem like his numbers are strong enough to deserve a place in the side," he added. Talking further about Rana's case, he emphasised that he will only get a chance in the XI when Bumrah gets rested against a weaker side in the group stage. "The truth is also that he won't get to play all matches. In fact, he might get to play even one match when Bumrah isn't available. If he isn't getting a chance to play, you say that whoever is sitting out doesn't make a difference," he said. "Prasidh Krishna should have got a chance" Chopra felt that Krishna, named only among the reserves, merited a place in the main 15. He also pointed out that Siraj's outstanding performances in England could have earned him a call-up, but the selectors seemed to have taken a different direction. "However, if you see the recent record, you will find that Prasidh Krishna should have got a chance, or you could have thought about rewarding Mohammed Siraj, but the team has once again gone towards Harshit," Chopra observed.
