South Africa looks to join international diamond marketing push
JOHANNESBURG: South Africa's cabinet has approved participation in an international effort to boost the marketing of real diamonds, responding to the increasing appeal of lab-grown gems and funded by a 1% levy on the annual revenues of diamond companies. The natural diamond market has struggled in the past three years due to rising consumer demand for the cheaper synthetic gems, coupled with global macroeconomic volatility which has led to lower international prices. In June, representatives from leading African producer nations, trade bodies and De Beers - part of Anglo American - signed an accord aimed at working together to promote natural diamonds and drive global demand. The signatories intend to allocate 1% of the annual revenue they generate from rough diamond sales to fund this initiative, spearheaded by the Natural Diamond Council. South Africa had not initially signed the accord, but Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni on Thursday announced that cabinet had approved the Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum's participation in international agreements aimed at helping diamond-producing countries better promote and market natural diamonds globally. "For this to be realised, cabinet has further approved that the diamond industry be requested to contribute 1% of their annual revenues generated from rough diamond sales to support marketing of South Africa's real diamonds to enable economic growth and job creation," Ntshavheni said. With their lower environmental impact and increasingly competitive pricing, synthetic diamonds are gaining appeal among younger, ethically conscious consumers - a shift that is pressuring traditional diamond miners and retailers to rethink their strategies. South Africa is the world's 6th-biggest diamond producer by volume. Its diamond production dipped 0.9% to approximately 5.8 million carats in 2024, with total sales of 13 billion rand ($731.45 million), down 21% from 2023. "Lab-grown diamonds are eating into our dinner," Mines minister Gwede Mantashe said at a meeting with diamond producers on Tuesday. "I'm very convinced that the marketing of natural diamonds is a necessary intervention."

Saudi Maaden H1 profit up 73% on higher sales; revenue hits $4.8bln
Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) has reported a 73% jump in its net profit for the first half, which soared to SAR3.47billion ($924 million) from SAR2.01 billion ($535 million) last year, mainly driven by higher consolidated sales volumes and stronger commodity prices. Announcing the financial results for the six-month period ended June 30, 2025, Maaden said its revenue too registered solid growth hitting SAR17.93 billion ($4.8 billion), up 23% over last year's figure of SAR17.93 billion. The revenue growth was mainly boosted by the jump in phosphate and flat-rolled aluminum sales, as well as improved market pricing. Ebitda also increased 23% to SAR7.25 billion, marking the company's second-highest first-half result on record. The Saudi mining giant had generated SAR3.93 billion in operating cash flow during the period and ended the first half with SAR10.37 billion in cash and equivalents. The company's net debt-to-ebitda ratio stood at 1.7x, below its target range. Among its key achievements for H1 was Maaden's subsidiary, Maaden Wa'ad Al Shamal Phosphate Company (MWSPC) making an early debt repayment of SAR2.1 billion, representing around 6% of Maaden's total consolidated debt. On its Q2 operational highlights, the state-backed miner said it included record quarterly production of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and progress across several strategic initiatives. In July, Maaden completed the acquisition of a 25.1% stake in Maaden Aluminum Company and Maaden Bauxite and Alumina Company from US-based Alcoa, giving it full ownership of both assets. The company also approved a final investment decision to proceed with its Ar Rjum gold project in the Central Arabian Gold Region, expected to produce around 300,000 ounces of gold annually. Exploration activity accelerated in the Wadi Al Jaww region, with the company citing promising initial results. Maaden also signed a MoU with U.S.-based MP Materials to explore development of a fully integrated rare earths supply chain in the Kingdom. Additionally, it signed a five-year deal to supply 3.1 million metric tonnes of DAP annually to three major Indian fertilizer firms, securing off-take for roughly half its annual DAP production. On the solid performance, CEO Bob Wilt said Maaden was well positioned to deliver a strong second half as it pursues its growth strategy and continues to develop Saudi Arabia's mineral resources. "During the first half of 2025, we delivered the second highest H1 ebitda, maintained strong momentum in our pursuit of operational excellence by setting record quarterly production in Phosphate, achieving ongoing exploration successes, advancing projects and building key partnerships," he noted. "We fully consolidated our aluminum portfolio in MAC and MBAC, closing the acquisition of the remaining 25.1% of Alcoa's stake post period on July 1 2025. Also we are moving forward with the Ar Rjum project toward FID, which will allow us to develop a new gold asset expected to produce around 300,000 ounces annually in the Central Arabian Gold Region," stated Wilt. "We also continue to uncover more of the KSA's mineral wealth as we accelerate exploration in Wadi Al Jaww, driven by promising initial results." said the top official. "Looking ahead, I am confident that we will deliver strong results in the second half of 2025 as we progress our growth strategy, drive forward with our exploration program and maintain operational excellence across our businesses. We remain committed to creating long-term value for shareholders and profitably advancing mining as the third pillar of Saudi Arabia's economy," he added.- TradeArabia News Service Copyright 2025 Al Hilal Publishing and Marketing Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. This is the new train that will take you from Abu Dhabi to Oman in under 2 hours
Work has begun on the much-anticipated multi-billion-dollar UAE-Oman railway project. Plans for a railway between the neighbouring GCC nations have been in the offing since 2022 and work is finally underway. The railway project will initially operate between the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi and the Omani port city of Sohar. The project will cover a distance of 303km and travel at speeds of up to 200km/h. And it will be equipped to handle the diverse terrains between the two countries, as well as any unpredictable weather conditions and water flow from surrounding valleys. Innovative and sustainable engineering solutions will ensure safe journeys. Work on the huge project got underway in May 2024, following a shareholder agreement between Hafeet Rail, a company made up of Etihad Rail and Oman Rail, and construction companies. Works are progressing along the railway alignment between the two nations. The update pointed out that progress is underway in several areas in North Al Batinah and Al Buraimi governates in Oman and in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. To date, more than one million man-hours have been clocked in developing the railway. The name of Hafeet Rail for the project was decided following the joint UAE-Oman Business Forum held in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday April 23. What the UAE-Oman Hafeet Rail means for you Initially, it will operate between the Al Wathba area near Abu Dhabi and the Omani port city of Sohar. With a speed reaching 200 kilometres per hour, journeys between Abu Dhabi and Sohar will take 100 minutes. Passenger trains will be able to accommodate up to 400 people. The project board aims to 'establish a record-breaking timeline for implementation', so expect it to be established sooner than you think. The freight train will have a capacity equivalent to 300 trucks which will reduce carbon emissions generated by trucks by 80 per cent. The railway aims to be a quick and efficient way of connecting the two countries, which is hoped to reduce car traffic and, consequently, the carbon footprint. This railway project would see the two Gulf countries connect and align with long-term plans for the GCC vision of a Gulf Railway. The Gulf Railway was planned to be opened by 2025, but construction has yet to begin in earnest. And, for businesses, it's predicted that it will have a major impact on trade between the two countries as one freight train trip is capable of transporting 15,000 tonnes of general cargo. Hafeet Rail will connect five major ports and a number of free zones in both countries and will see transportation time cut in half compared to traditional on-ground methods. Hafeet Rail represents a groundbreaking achievement as the first modern cross-border train in the Middle East and the Arab world, connecting the Sultanate of Oman to the United Arab Emirates. — Hafeet Rail (@hafeetrail) June 2, 2024 Living in the UAE Everything you need to know about traffic cameras in Abu Dhabi No, they're not just for speed When is the next public holiday?
