Joe Rodon's first international goal helped Wales overcome minnows Liechtenstein but manager Craig Bellamy suffered an injury blow before Monday's crunch World Cup qualifier against Belgium with Neco Williams carried off on a stretcher. Rodon's thumping header at the end of the first half pacified Welsh frustrations who had until then encountered visiting goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel in inspired form. Second half goals from Harry Wilson and Kieffer Moore gave the scoreline a fairer reflection but while Bellamy's side now head to Brussels as Group J leaders, there will be concern over Nottingham Forest defender Williams who landed awkwardly on his ankle after 20 minutes and left the pitch in pain. The FIFA rankings suggested a one-sided affair at the Cardiff City stadium with only five countries considered worse than Liechtenstein in 205th. Bellamy's unbeaten record in charge was never likely to be threatened but Buchel kept the game goalless for 39 minutes by pulling off fantastic stops to deny Brennan Johnson, Ethan Ampadu and Moore. Liechtenstein contested the corner that broke the deadlock but Sorba Thomas capitalised with an excellent delivery for Leeds United's Rodon to power home on his 53rd appearance for his country. It was Williams' replacement Jay Dasilva who set up the second Wales goal after 65 minutes. His pinpoint cross from the left was headed in by Wilson who was back on familiar territory having spent a season on loan for Cardiff from Liverpool. Three minutes later, Moore was able to bag in his 14th international goal, tapping home after a shot by substitute David Brooks had been parried by Buchel. Liechtenstein are winless in 44 World Cup qualifiers and failed to register a shot at goal with their 20% possession. With the points in the bag, Bellamy was able to withdraw key men Johnson, Thomas and Wilson to keep them fresh for Belgium who are favourites to take their only automatic qualifying spot and opened their campaign last night in North Macedonia. Wales also hope to have Leeds winger Dan James available if he continues his recovery from illness. Tottenham's Ben Davies is tipped to continue as captain and should win his 96th cap.

Rome, June 6 (Reuters) - Kenyan Beatrice Chebet came close to breaking the women's 5000 metres world record on Friday at the Rome Diamond League when she clocked 14:03.69, a meeting record that was just 2.5 seconds shy of Gudaf Tsegay's 1997 world mark of 14:00.21. Chebet, who recorded the second-fastest ever time in the women's 3000 metres – running 8:11.56 in Rabat last month behind Wang Junxia's 8:06.11 set in 1993 – appears determined to shave further seconds off her times. "I can see that my body is in good shape and that I am capable of achieving the world record. Now I am going home to prepare for it. Everything is possible," the 25-year-old said after the race. Jamaica's Andrenette Knight dominated the women's 400m hurdles, finishing in 53.67 seconds, while American Anavia Battle won the women's 200 metres in 22.53 seconds. Irish Sarah Healey triumphed in the 1500 metres with a time of 3:59.17. The men's 110m hurdles produced the evening's closest finish, with Swiss athlete Jason Joseph clocking 13.14 and snatching victory from American Cordell Tinch, who finished in the same time. There was also a nail-bitting race in the men's 400 metres, with American Quincy Hall finishing in 44.22 seconds, just a hundredth of a second ahead of South Africa's Zakithi Nene. "I have been working hard. We are coming there. I want to be the best. It is coming down. You do not know about the time, but it is coming down this year," Quincy said. In the men's 1500 metres, France's Azeddine Habz surged in the closing stages to beat former world champion Kenya's Timothy Cheruiyot. Habz won by three-hundredths of a second with a time of 3:29.72, while Cheruiyot finished in 3:29.75. American Trayvon Bromell claimed victory in the 100 metres, finishing in 9.84 seconds, while Tokyo Olympics high jump gold medallist Gianmarco Tamberi failed to reach the podium as South Korea's Woo Sanghyeok took the win with a jump of 2.32 metres.

Liverpool up their bid for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz to £113m
Liverpool have increased their offer for Florian Wirtz to £113m in an attempt to seal a club record deal for the Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder. The Premier League champions had a £109m bid for the Germany international rejected last weekend but, following further talks between the two clubs, have submitted a new package that would guarantee Leverkusen £100m plus £13m in add-ons. The offer, however, still falls short of the German club's £126m valuation and Liverpool appear unwilling to meet their asking price.
