Home owned by family of UBC and Vancouver Coastal Health embezzler up for sale
The Law Courts building, which is home to B.C. Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, is seen in Vancouver, on Thursday, Nov. 23, 2023. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck NORTH VANCOUVER — A real estate listing for a $2 million property in North Vancouver says the home has been excellently maintained and is on an attractive street, but what the description doesn't say is it's a forced sale involving an embezzler and a years-long legal battle. The B.C. government gazette says the sale was ordered when the B.C. Supreme Court sided with the University of British Columbia in a lawsuit filed against the estate of Wanda Moscipan, who worked as an administrator for both the university and the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority between 1997 and 2011. A court ruling last year says Moscipan used her 'substantial administrative autonomy' in her dual role to engage in 'various fraudulent actions,' including forging signatures, stealing from a dormant bank account and paying herself an inflated salary. The court ruling says the woman died in 2012, the year both the university and the health authority filed lawsuits to recover the stolen funds. The gazette listing says a court bailiff was to list the property for sale on Thursday for the recovery of more than $1.5 million against her estate, administered by her husband. The conditions of the property sale say the proceeds will go to pay any outstanding taxes, sheriff's fees, Realtor commissions, with the remainder paid out by the court to the university and the health authority. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 13, 2025.

Interfaith Food Bank showcases its learning garden for National Garden Day
The Interfaith Food Bank took full advantage of the sunshine on Friday to celebrate National Garden Day. The Interfaith Food Bank took full advantage of the sunshine on Friday to celebrate National Garden Day. Interfaith hosted a free barbeque in the afternoon, with a chance to learn about the garden at the food bank. The community garden allows staff to give lessons, tours and teach residents about ways to plant and the benefits of growing fresh produce. Since being installed in 2013, Interfaith has held its garden party every year since to showcase what the food bank has to offer and the supports available. 'Our learning garden is intended to teach people how to grow their own food as well as where their food comes from, but it is a learning garden, not a community garden so we don't have plots,' said Danielle McIntyre, Interfaith Food Bank executive director. 'Instead, we have our volunteers to tend the garden all season long. 'We primarily use the produce that we grow in our cooking classes and then anything surplus will go right out to our food bank families.' The Interfaith Food Bank took full advantage of the sunshine on Friday to celebrate National Garden Day. The Interfaith Food Bank took full advantage of the sunshine on Friday to celebrate National Garden Day. National Garden Day is held annually on the Friday before Father's Day to encourage Canadians to celebrate gardens in their communities. Interfaith's next event in the learning garden is DIY Bird Feeders. The event will take place June 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. 'Celebrate the first day of summer by creating your own eco-friendly bird feeder using recycled materials,' Interfaith says on its website. 'Discover the best spots to hang your feeder and learn about the feathered friends you might spot around Lethbridge.'

A man was arrested after stealing a police car from a collision scene in Montreal's Plateau Mont-Royal borough Friday afternoon. (SOURCE: Loren Cantor) A man was arrested after stealing a police car from a collision scene in Montreal's Plateau Mont-Royal borough Friday afternoon. Police were called around 4:50 p.m. about a collision between a vehicle and a cyclist at the intersection of du Parc-La Fontaine Avenue and Roy Street. A passerby managed to steal a cruiser as officers intervened and fled driving northbound, hitting several vehicles in his path. A 28-year-old woman who was hit in her car suffered minor injuries to the face and was transported to hospital. The stolen police car was later intercepted at the intersection of Papineau Avenue and Gilford Street after a police chase. In total, two civilian vehicles and five police cars were damaged. The driver, a 32-year-old man, was arrested for driving under the influence and was taken to a detention centre. Police say he is expected to face several other charges. The cyclist was injured but his life is not in danger. Two crime scenes have been set up both on du Parc-La Fontaine Avenue and on Gilford Street. Editor's note: The SPVM previously stated that the man arrested was the driver of the vehicle that struck the cyclist. He is in fact a bystander who is not connected to the collision.
