Invasive species removed in Gudalur as part of World Environment Day celebrations
As part of World Environment Day celebrations, the Gudalur forest division conducted a clean-up of invasive plants from outside reserve forests on Thursday. In a press release, the Gudalur forest division said the theme for World Environment Day this year was 'Putting an end to plastic pollution' and 'No invasive Nilgiris.' The Forest Department said the initiative will be the first of many undertaken this year to eradicate plastic waste from forests and adjoining areas and to also minimise the spread of invasive species such as Lantana camara. In Masinagudi forest division in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, World Environment Day was celebrated by distributing tree saplings and seedlings, planting of trees and creating awareness among the public about the need to keep the tiger reserve free of plastic and waste. Passing tourists were stopped at the reserve by forest staff and were involved in the initiative to improve awareness among the public.

‘Namma Mysuru Swachha Mysuru' clean-up drive on June 14
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mysuru chapter, in collaboration with Mysuru City Corporation and Young Indians, will lead an environmental clean-up drive on June 14, to mark World Environment Day. Under the theme 'Namma Mysuru, Swachha Mysuru,' the initiative aims to promote sustainability, restore ecosystems, and highlight the urgent issue of plastic pollution across India. The clean-up will be conducted from 7.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. along the Outer Ring Road, followed by an awareness session at Maharaja's College Grounds from 10.00 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. The session will gather environmentalists, educators, industry leaders, and students to discuss sustainable urban practices. 'India produces over 3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, much of it unmanaged and polluting public spaces. Despite Mysuru's reputation for cleanliness, rapid urbanisation continues to strain waste systems. This campaign goes beyond cleaning—it aims to reshape public behavior on consumption and disposal,' the organisers said. The session will address reducing single-use plastics, encouraging recycling, and advocating for policies supporting a circular economy. Aligned with India's climate goals under the Paris Agreement and SDGs, the drive highlights the need for local ecological balance amid climate impacts on health, agriculture, and weather. Mysuru, with its ecological legacy, plays a vital role in local climate action, it added. Environmental change starts with a collective effort. This World Environment Day, CII Mysuru urges Mysureans to join hands not just to clean, but to restore the city and protect its future, the release said. CII Mysuru has invited institutions, industry bodies, NGOs, and citizens to participate and commit to sustainable practices. Volunteers will be provided with safety guidelines and clean-up tools. Protecting nature every day is our shared responsibility: Raichur University Registrar
Safeguarding nature is not merely an obligation of a few, but a collective responsibility, said Shankar Vanikyal, Registrar of Maharshi Valmiki University, Raichur while addressing the gathering during World Environment Day celebrations held at the Krishnatunga Auditorium on Thursday. Presiding over the event Thursday, which was jointly organised by the university's Departments of Life Sciences and the Karnataka Forest Department, Vanikyal emphasised that the growing global temperature, erratic climate patterns, and the alarming extinction of wildlife and bird species threaten the very fabric of life on earth. 'If we fail to conserve the environment that sustains us, it will not be able to sustain us in return,' he said. He criticised the unchecked pursuit of material comfort at the cost of nature and urged everyone to prioritise conservation over unchecked development. Expressing concern over the increasing use of plastic, he remarked that today's youth often feel embarrassed to carry jute bags, mistakenly perceiving it as old-fashioned, leading to greater reliance on environmentally harmful materials such as plastic. He strongly advocated for personal discipline in environmental protection. 'Before buying any product, we must ask ourselves if it harms the environment. A clean and joyful atmosphere is born from a clean environment,' he noted. Speaking on the occasion, K. Venkatesh, Deputy Registrar of the university, highlighted the link between a healthy environment and a healthy life. 'Every form of life, including animals and birds, depends on nature for food, air, and water. Preventing plastic pollution and conserving the environment is a duty we all share,' he said while addressing the student community. To mark the occasion, saplings were planted on the university campus. Participants took a pledge to nurture and grow the saplings. Faculty members from the Life Sciences departments distributed saplings to dignitaries as a symbol of commitment to nature. Present at the programme were Jyothi Damma Prakash, Registrar (Evaluation), Parvathi C.S., Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Latha M.S., Deputy Registrar (Academics), and University Engineer Pampapathi, apart from faculty from various departments, non-teaching staff, and students.
