Ajax slump sees PSV take lead in Dutch league ahead of final round of matches
AMSTERDAM - Ajax Amsterdam relinquished top spot in the Dutch league to PSV Eindhoven on the penultimate match day on Wednesday after they were held to a 2-2 draw following a late equaliser by Groningen.
Ajax, who went into Wednesday's fixture one point ahead of PSV, conceded a goal nine minutes into stoppage time at Groningen, meaning they are no longer in pole position going into the final match on Sunday.
PSV wrestled back top spot as they ran out comfortable 4-1 home winners against Heracles Almelo with a pair of goals from American Malik Tillman and Morocco international Ismael Saibari.
The result catapulted PSV into a one point lead and they will win the league on Sunday if they beat 11th placed Sparta Rotterdam away.
Ajax, who finish the season at home to Twente, were nine points clear with nine matches left but have picked up only two points from their last four matches.
They were four points ahead of PSV before last weekend's fixtures but suffered a stunning 3-0 home reversal to mid-table NEC Nijmegen.
On Wednesday they looked to be keeping their noses in front after Wout Weghorst put them 2-1 up with 20 minutes left but goals from Thijmen Blokzijl and Luciano Valente secured Groningen the win.
Ajax, captained by England international Jordan Henderson, had been on the road to redemption after two poor seasons but Wednesday's result means that they are no longer in control of their title hopes. REUTERS

Barca-Villarreal LaLiga match in Miami moves closer after RFEF approval
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox MADRID - Spanish football could finally cross the Atlantic after the Royal Spanish Football Federation approved a request for Barcelona and Villarreal to play their December LaLiga match in Miami – a move nearly a decade in the making. The RFEF board gave the green light on Monday for the teams' matchday 17 game to be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on December 20 in the first step towards the competition playing an official match abroad for the first time in its history. The proposal now heads to European soccer's governing body UEFA before requiring final approval from FIFA – the last hurdle in LaLiga President Javier Tebas' American dream. "At its meeting on 11 August 2025, the RFEF Board of Directors received a request from Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona to play their match on matchday 17 of the first division in the United States," RFEF said in a statement. "... the Royal Spanish Football Federation will submit the request to UEFA to begin the process for subsequent authorisation by FIFA for the match to be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on 20 December 2025 ..." LaLiga has been pursuing their transatlantic vision for almost a decade, emulating the strategy employed by the NFL and NBA to establish themselves in other markets. Tebas' first attempt came in the 2018-19 season with a proposed Girona-Barca match in the U.S. that never materialised. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Alcaraz, Gauff march through Cincinnati second round
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Aug 10, 2025; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Carlos Alcaraz (ESP) returns a shot against Damir Dzumhur (BIH) during the Cincinnati Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Images Carlos Alcaraz bounced back from a mid-match slump to down Bosnian Damir Dzumhur 6-1 2-6 6-3 in the second round of the Cincinnati Open on Sunday, as American Coco Gauff overcame early problems on serve to cruise past China's Wang Xinyu 6-3 6-2. Second-ranked Spaniard Alcaraz has been on an extraordinary run, reaching the finals of his last six tournaments, and next faces Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor or Serbia's Hamad Medjedovic. After a routine start, Alcaraz racked up an uncharacteristic number of unforced errors in the second set before regaining his composure, outfoxing his opponent at the net before closing it out with a solid forehand shot. Second seed Gauff kept her composure despite eight double faults in the first set to book a meeting with Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska in the third round. The 2023 champion converted on all five break point chances she got on Center Court and was firing on all cylinders as she won 20 of her last 23 points on serve. "I had a shaky start with the serve but I was able to push through and figure that out," Gauff told the Tennis Channel. "Just taking my time and remembering the things we worked on in practice and just trying not to, I guess, fall into the same old patterns." Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed.
