Task force set up in Johor to monitor school bullying
The state education and information committee chairman, Aznan Tamin, stated that at least three state executive councillors, holding various portfolios including health, education, Islamic affairs and welfare, would be part of the task force.
The task force met for the first time yesterday, he said during a press conference after the 2025 Citra Karisma event in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
Aznan was asked to comment on the case involving a 10-year-old boy battling nasal cancer, who suffered a concussion after allegedly being bullied at a religious school here. The incident took place in February.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, in a Facebook post yesterday, said such cases must be handled fairly and transparently in line with established guidelines.
Azman stressed that although the incident happened about six months ago, the state took the matter seriously and decisions would only be made after thorough discussions involving all parties.
He said Johor also plans to introduce awareness programmes under the Johor Safe campaign and No Bully campaign to address similar incidents in schools.
Meanwhile, UTM celebrated the excellence of its staff at the 2025 Citra Karisma event, honouring 392 recipients with the Excellent Service Award and 152 others across 29 categories.
Officiated by Aznan, who is also an alumnus of UTM, the event recognised outstanding contributions in teaching, research, leadership and administration.

Johor launches statewide campaign against bullying with special Friday sermons
JOHOR BARU: Bullying is strictly prohibited in Islam and will be the focus of the Friday sermon across mosques in Johor this week, as part of a sweeping campaign against the menace. State Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said the initiatives, carried out under his portfolio, were in line with the decree by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, for an all-out anti-bullying push. The measures include an awareness campaign with the Kolej Universiti Islam Johor Sultan Ibrahim's student representative council, a statewide campaign across Johor's government religious schools and private Islamic institutions, and a special Friday sermon to highlight the dangers of bullying and its prohibition in Islam. "The main objective is to raise awareness among students, civil servants and the public about the devastating effects of bullying, which often lead to trauma, loss of dignity and emotional distress for victims," Fared said in a statement today. He added that the campaign also aimed to instil empathy among youths and the wider community to stamp out bullying at its roots. "Firm action must be taken against bullies. At the same time, awareness must be strengthened so that such incidents do not recur. "The safety and wellbeing of our children must always be protected," he said.

Court to hear bid to exhume UTM Palapes cadet's body for second post-mortem on Aug 25
SHAH ALAM, Aug 19 —The High Court here today set Aug 25 to hear the notice of motion to exhume the body of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) trainee cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin for a second post-mortem. Judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet set the date after the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC), named the respondents in the application, requested time to file the affidavit-in-reply. The IGP and the AGC were represented by Senior Federal Counsel Nurul Huda Mohd Salehuddin and Selangor Director of Prosecutions, Kalmizah Salleh, respectively. The two respondents were given until this Friday to file their affidavit-in-reply. Syamsul Haris, 22, died during training at the Army Combat Training Centre in Ulu Tiram on July 28. The Johor police had said that a post-mortem found no signs of criminal injury, but the deceased's mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, 45, called for an inquiry after finding 'mysterious bruises' on her son's body.
