Incredible moment dad who battled cancer tells son he's won on the EuroMillions
We all know the lottery is a game of pure chance, but sometimes it feels like the prize money has gone to someone who really deserves it.
This is true in the case of Paul Harvey, a single dad from Norfolk who just scooped £1million on the EuroMillions.
He's had a difficult couple of years battling bowel cancer while trying to look after his teenage son and daughter.
But the 51-year-old is now hoping for some happier times with his two children after scooping the massive prize.
He claimed a £1million prize during the EuroMillions draw on July 4 – and the heartwarming moment he shared the news with his son was caught on video.
Paul knew he wanted to capture the moment, so he set up his phone and recorded it after an agonising wait for them to get home from school.
He said: 'It felt like forever waiting for the kids to get home from school so I could break the news.
'Their reactions were hilarious and heart-warming. We all feel ridiculously excited and relieved in equal measure. It just doesn't seem real!
'I wanted to tell the kids in person so when my son got home I set up my phone to record it.
'I got a massive lump in my throat as I asked him 'how many millionaires do you know?' He said, 'zero', and I replied: 'well you do now'!
'I then added 'I swear on my life' – I do like to joke but when I say those words, my kids know to take it seriously.
'Life hasn't always been easy, but the kids mean the world to me, and they always come first.
'We have never been away abroad together, and I would love to take them both to Greece. But first we need to get our passports!'
As well as a dream holiday together, Paul wants to buy his daughter a second-hand car, a Fiat 500, so she can learn to drive.
He also hopes to help them kickstart their careers as they both near the end of full-time education.
Paul explained: 'I am so proud of what the kids have achieved already in life.
'They both have big ideas about what they want to do when they leave school, and I cannot wait to help them in their chosen careers.
'It's the important stuff like helping them to learn to drive and getting them a car and insurance so they can get to college and then work.
'My daughter has a driving test later this year and I would love to get her a second-hand Fiat 500 for her to practice in.'
Paul didn't even realise he was a millionaire for an entire week after the draw.
He checked his account as normal after the EuroMillions draw on July 4 to find he had won £5 plus a free Lucky Dip ticket.
A week later, he got an unexpected email from the National Lottery urging him to check his account again and to get in touch urgently.
Paul was suspicious of the email, explaining: 'It didn't look like the normal email I get. I thought this must be a scam.
'I read the email again and then Googled the National Lottery Line where I saw the telephone numbers matched.
'It was then that I allowed myself to get much more excited.'
It turned out Paul had won the £1million as part of the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker draw.
During each draw, every ticket is allocated a unique code which is entered into a raffle where one winner will take home the prize.
The huge sum is going to make a massive difference to Paul and his family's lives.
He explained: 'We can afford our very own home, and I can finally have my own bedroom rather than sleeping downstairs.
'And to go on a family holiday altogether will be fantastic. I can speak Greek fluently and I can't wait to show off to the kids.
'I lived in Cyprus for 12 years when I was younger. I would love to go back one day but for now it's a holiday in Greece for me and the kids.
'This win gives us so many more options, but I want to take my time and do it right.' More Trending
Paul isn't the only person who's recently picked up a life-changing lottery win.
A family from Cork who won a £216million jackpot said they intend to stay in their home city – although they might treat themselves to a Rolex watch.
And two friends picked up £168,000 each after reading a horoscope which suggested a Pisces and Taurus – their star signs – would win the lottery if they entered together.
It's not long since someone won the £208million EuroMillions jackpot, the maximum amount.

Doctor Who star's show dropped from UK streaming service confirms ITV launch
More than a year after it was pulled off Paramount Plus, a mystery drama starring Jodie Whittaker is returning to UK screens. A month after it aired in Australia, the series One Night was made available to UK viewers in November 2024. The six-part series followed friends Tess (Jodie), Simone (Nicole da Silva) and Hat (Yael Stone), whose lives have been changed by 'the traumatic events of one night in their hometown twenty years previously'. It was teased of the show: 'One Night is the story of three women whose bond was all but destroyed by the traumatic events of one night 20 years ago. 'Since then, Simone has harboured secret hopes of becoming a novelist but most of her haphazard attempts have been shoved into her bottom drawer. Now, at the age of 40, she has finally written the one story she could never get out of her mind, and her debut manuscript has become an unexpected overnight success. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. 'But it soon becomes apparent that the devastating story the book tells doesn't exclusively belong to her. At the heart of Simone's novel is a tragedy which also happened to Tess (Jodie Whittaker) and Hat (Yael Stone), her two childhood best friends. 'As it becomes harder to prise fact from fiction, one person's memory and story from another's, the book threatens to derail all their friendships, bringing old traumas to the surface of the small coastal community where they grew up, and stirring its perpetrators, who want to make it all go away.' Despite it being labelled a 'very solid crime drama' by critics, One Night suddenly disappeared from Paramount after just three months. It was explained at the time that this was due to the platform reportedly shifts towards a focus on Hollywood-style content with mass appeal and wider cost-savings efforts. However, ITV has now announced it will be bringing the show back and allowing viewers to tune in again – or for the first time. One Night will now stream in full from Saturday August 16 and will also air that night on ITV1. At the time of its release, The Guardian wrote the following about One Night: 'The overall effect is very much of an Australian Big Little Lies – a female-centred story played out mostly amongst affluent people in shiny clothes and shinier houses.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'With strong performances and a diverse cast, it demands attention — but its biggest triumph may just be in the conversations it sparks after its watched,' The London Evening Standard shared. 'The show might have benefitted from unspooling its central narrative over fewer episodes because after the halfway mark the drama becomes less character-driven, skating into crime mystery territory. But the acting throughout One Night is incredible,' The Age added. One Night was the first TV role since playing the first female Doctor for Jodie. Reflecting on what drew her to the project, the 41-year-old actress explained that the drama depicted a story about sexual assault in a way that felt 'completely unique' to her. 'What made this completely unique to me and completely engrossing was the change of POV [point of view],' she told Metro. 'Very often it's told from outside in – there's an investigation, there's detectives, there's people working things out. This is about the decimation something like that can have. 'It's also about how the event – whether it happened a minute ago or 20 years ago – is defining for a group of women that it affects, particularly this friendship group. But also what it's about is how we all survive something like that and who owns memory, who has the right to tell stories, and especially if that story is true.' More Trending One Night was created and written by the award-winning Emily Ballou (The Slap, Taboo) and directed by Catherine Millar (The Twelve, The Secrets She Keeps) and Lisa Matthews (Doctor Doctor). It also stars Kat Stewart, George Mason, Erroll Shand, Noni Hazlehurst, Tina Bursill (Doctor Doctor), William Zappa, Damien Strouthos and Jillian Nguyen. One Night is streaming on ITVX from Saturday August 16. It will air that night at 9.30pm on ITV1. View More » A version of this article was originally published on February 5, 2024. Got a story? Peter Andre left 'feeling sick' as daughter Princess, 18, reveals shocking DMs
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Peter Andre was left horrified when teenage daughter Princess revealed the messages she receives from men on social media. The 18-year-old, whose parents are Australian pop star Peter, 52, and former glamour model Katie Price, 47, is following in her mum and dad's footsteps by venturing into showbiz. Princess has collaborated with fast fashion giants Shein and PrettyLittleThing on Instagram ads and was recently confirmed for her own reality show on ITV. However, the budding influencer, who boasts 774,000 followers on Insta alone, is quickly learning that there's a dark side to being a public figure. In the first episode of her show, The Princess Diaries, doting dad Peter has a candid conversation with her about online trolling, resulting in disgust as Princess digs out some harrowing DMs. 'What ya doing?', Peter asks as they sit together on the sofa, to which she replies: 'Reading comments.' 'People saying they wanna see my feet,' Princess laughs, to which Peter's expression quickly turns to one of concern. 'What? They wanna see your feet? When did this start happening?', he quizzes, taken aback. As Princess says that it's been happening throughout the last year, the Mysterious Girl singer begs: 'Please God, that's the only thing they ask for?' Unfortunately, that isn't the case, as Princess reveals that men have also sent her messages celebrating the fact that she's 'finally legal'. 'You find out who that was, flipping heck!', declares Peter, his head in his hands. Princess then scrolls through her messages to show her dad the reality of being a young female influencer in 2025, hesitant to even expose him to what she's on the receiving end of. 'I don't actually know if I want to show you,' she admits, but tells cameras in a cutaway clip that she 'doesn't want to hide stuff from him'. After digging out one example of 'disgusting' direct messaging, Princess hands her dad the phone, to which he physically recoils. 'I didn't think it was gonna be like that,' he retorts, deeply disturbed. 'Oh my God. 'That really has made me feel sick, like, in the pit of my stomach.' The reality star adds to his daughter: 'I hate it because you're still my baby. How old is this dude? Oh my God, what's his name? Where does he live?' When Princess explains that the individual in question has an anonymous profile, Peter asks whether she feels 'distressed' reading such comments. 'That's life, that's social media,' she states, informing her dad that she can't simply 'get rid of it' because it's now her job. The Insania singer then expresses regret over letting his daughter use social media at a young age, having always felt fearful of the unknown due to the likes of Instagram and TikTok not existing when he started out. Peter has long been protective of Princess, as well as his other kids. He also has Junior, 20, with Katie, as well as Theo, Amelia, and Arabella with wife Emily Andre, 35. However, having a father in the industry has been a huge help to Princess and her brother, who is forging a music career for himself. Speaking ahead of the launch of The Princess Diaries, Junior told This Morning: 'Growing up in the public eye comes with its pros and cons. We keep a lot of things private; people think they know a lot more than they do. 'We're normal and humble; we don't feel different to anyone else. We're all human.' Princess added that while she expects some 'negativity', her parents have taught her 'how to deal with it'. 'There are horrible people, but we just have to deal with it.' More Trending Alas, the launch of the teen's reality show hasn't been without drama, due to reports of her feuding with mum Katie, who claimed she was 'banned' from appearing in the programme. Speaking on her podcast with sister Sophie, the reality icon said she felt 'upset' after allegedly being told she was 'not welcome' on the set. Addressing the speculation, Princess later told the Daily Mail: 'It's my show; it's not based on my parents; it's focused on me. To be honest, there's no rift between me and either of my parents.'
