TVET skills key to youth success in Sarawak's future industries, says Rentap

SIBU (April 26): Vocational college students have been urged to fully embrace opportunities in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to secure a stronger future, in line with Sarawak's development agenda.
In giving this advice, State Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu said the state government is actively implementing strategic initiatives across emerging sectors such as hydrogen energy technology, smart transportation, and aerospace industry, offering vast opportunities to Sarawak's youth.
'TVET is not just about acquiring technical skills; it is a ticket to a stable career and promising income,' he said when officiating the Madani Unity Open House and launch of the Kolej Vokasional Sibu Golden Jubilee celebration, held at the college hall today.
Adding on, the Layar assemblyman stressed the importance of steering clear of laziness, describing it as the 'main enemy of mankind'.
'Success does not come without effort and skills,' he said.
In this regard, Rentap urged students to fully utilise the skills acquired at college to attract employers and boost their self-confidence.
'In today's fast-evolving technological landscape, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence, students must equip themselves not only with theoretical knowledge but also practical experience and the ability to evaluate information and make sound decisions.'
On the Golden Jubilee celebration, Rentap acknowledged the pivotal role of the institution over the past five decades in producing thousands of highly skilled alumni.
'Kolej Vokasional Sibu is one of the key institutions contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in Sarawak.
'I hope all educators and students will continue striving for even greater success,' added the deputy minister.

Plantation output, feedstock boost sector outlook
KUALA LUMPUR: The near-term outlook for the plantation sector has turned slightly more positive, especially for the downstream segment, thanks to improved feedstock availability, according to Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB). In its sector review, HLIB noted that many plantation players are optimistic about achieving higher fresh fruit bunch (FFB) output in 2025, supported by a recovery trend that is expected to strengthen in the months ahead. "Most planters remain optimistic in achieving higher FFB output in 2025, supported by the recent recovery, which is expected to continue over the coming months. "Meanwhile, crude palm oil (CPO) production costs are guided to drop further in 2025 (vs 2024), driven by the anticipated increase in FFB output and lower fertiliser prices," it said in a note. HLIB said during the recent quarterly results season, earnings for six out of eight planters under its coverage met expectations. However, it said TSH Resources Bhd's results surpassed estimates, while FGV Holdings Bhd's results missed expectations. HLIB also noted that performance in the downstream segment was mixed among the integrated players - namely IOI Corp Bhd, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd, and SD Guthrie Bhd. "We believe this was partly due to the uneven recovery in demand for oleochemical products across different geographical regions and different hedging positions and currency translation within the refinery segment (in our view)," it said. Overall, HLIB has maintained its 2025 to 2026 CPO price assumptions of RM4,000 per tonnes and RM3,800 per tonnes, with the view that continued output recovery (particularly from Indonesia) will continue to cap palm oil prices over the near to medium term. "Maintain a Neutral stance on the sector, given the absence of a clear demand catalyst (at least for now). "For exposure, our top picks are SD Guthrie (Buy; target price: RM5.17), Johor Plantation Group Bhd (Buy; target price: RM1.35) and IOI Corp (Buy; target price : RM4.24)," it added.

Ahmad Zahid hails London visit as bridge to reinforce Malaysia-UK ties
LONDON: Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described his four-day working visit to the United Kingdom which concluded Wednesday as a bridge to strengthen bilateral relations. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the visit, filled with discussions and programmes, differed from previous visits as he had the opportunity to personally witness the commitment of students sponsored by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) at University College London (UCL) during a session with them. '...we (delegation) saw their commitment not only to acquiring knowledge but also to acting as catalysts for Generation Z and Generation Alpha. When they come here and gain knowledge, then return to Malaysia, they will contribute not only to their professions but to other fields as well, providing motivation especially to Generation Alpha and the millennial generation,' he told a press conference here upon the conclusion of his visit. Additionally, Ahmad Zahid shared that Malaysia's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) received very positive feedback from the university and students who were excited about the government's game-changing initiatives. '...we are aware of the government's aim to create 60,000 high-tech engineering job opportunities, and we have requested for the Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes to be expedited,' he said. Beyond TVET, the visit also strengthened cooperation in rural development, renewable energy, and climate resilience through Ahmad Zahid's meeting with the UK's Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed. The meeting also discussed collaboration in rural transformation, disaster management, water security, and investments in green energy, including the reactivation of the ASEAN Power Grid. During the visit, Malaysia also proposed the use of green sukuk for climate financing and efforts to lead the global halal ecosystem through the World Halal Council and a unified halal logo. Both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing trade relations under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and through private sector cooperation. Through the Malaysia-UK franchise business dialogue held during the visit, Ahmad Zahid expressed hope that it would help Malaysian franchise brands penetrate the UK market by 2026.
