Customs seizes hydroponic weed from Mumbai airport passenger, airline staff member held with gold dust
In the first case, officials of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department laid a trap and intercepted a passenger who had arrived from Bangkok. During the search, the person was found to be hiding 947 grams of greenish coloured lumps purported to be hydroponic weed of marijuana.
The contraband, also called hydro ganja, was concealed in vacuum-sealed plastic packets and kept inside a trolley bag of the passenger. The panchnama was conducted in front of witnesses, and the passenger was arrested under the provisions of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
In the second case, an AIU team intercepted an airline staff member on the airport premises after receiving information that he was carrying gold illegally. During the search, the gold dust mixed with wax and weighing around 3,020 grams was found concealed inside innerwear and in a specially designed belt. The individual was arrested under the Customs Act, 1962. The officials are interrogating the accused to get the inputs regarding the source of the gold and the supplier, said a Customs officer.
On Wednesday night, the Customs agency arrested a person on his arrival at the Mumbai airport and seized suspected hydroponic cannabis weed valued at Rs 14.5 crore from his possession.
The passenger was trying to smuggle the contraband, also called hydro ganja, by concealing it under clothes in his trolley bag. During the examination of the baggage, the officers recovered 14.548 kg of greenish product, which was later confirmed it be hydroponic weed or marijuana, which has an illicit market value of approximately ₹14.5 crore. The Customs Department said that it was currently reviewing the international travel history of the arrested individuals who were arrested to ascertain if they had travelled abroad for the same purpose.

Autorickshaw driver held with 90,000 yaba tablets in Tripuras Agartala
Agartala (Tripura) [India], August 8 (ANI): In a major drug bust, Tripura police recovered 90,000 Yaba tablets from an autorickshaw during a routine vehicle checking operation near Amtali Bypass in Tripura's Agartala on Friday, police said. According to officials, the operation was being carried out near the Bongeshwar Bridge, where Sub-Inspector Mrinal Pal and his team were on duty. During the checking, an auto rickshaw approached the checkpoint at high speed. Despite being signalled to stop, the driver tried to flee, prompting police to give chase. The vehicle was eventually intercepted in front of a roadside eatery (dhaba) along the bypass. Upon inspection, only the driver, identified as Subir Sutradhar, was found inside. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of two bags kept on the rear seat — one blue and the other blue-and-white in colour. The bags contained several bundles and packets of Yaba tablets — approximately 40,000 tablets in one and 50,000 in the other, totalling 90,000, they said. Senior police officials rushed to the spot following the seizure. A case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Amtali Police Station. The accused has been arrested and produced before the said further investigation is underway to identify others involved in the trafficking network. (ANI)

Rs 4 lakh awarded to 62-yr-old woman after 2018 road accident
Thane: Motor Accident Claims Tribunal awarded a compensation of Rs 4.1 lakh to a 62-year-old woman who was seriously injured after falling under a moving Mira Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT) bus in 2018. The woman was trying to board a bus at a stop at Mira Road, when the driver, without confirming if all passengers were safely boarded, allegedly started the vehicle abruptly. The woman fell and the rear wheel of the bus ran over her left leg, causing significant injuries. She required immediate medical attention and underwent surgery, including skin grafting and further treatment due to complications. A police complaint was filed, and charges under various sections of the IPC were registered against the driver. The victim, a housewife at the time, claimed the incident led to lasting physical and financial difficulties. She sought compensation under the Motor Vehicles Act. The tribunal found sufficient evidence and confirmed that the insurance policy was valid on the date of the incident. While a disability of 33% was initially assessed, the tribunal considered a functional disability of 10% in determining compensation. The award covers medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of income, cost of assistance during recovery, and other costs. The tribunal directed the transport manager, MBMT and the Directorate of Insurance Maharashtra State, to jointly and severally pay Rs 4,17,890 with 9% interest per annum to the claimant. The order states that a portion of the compensation be invested in a fixed deposit for two years and the balance be paid directly to the claimant.
