That starting five, the Cavaliers ' most-used lineup during the regular season and had a dominant +12.5 net rating, has played just 23 minutes across six playoff games due to injury (and has a -5.1 net rating in those minutes).
Cleveland needs Garland and Mobley to take some of the ball-handling and shot-creation load off Donovan Mitchell, who scored 48 points in Game 2 and got the Cavaliers out to a 20-point lead, but wore down during the fourth quarter as that lead slipped away. Mitchell was 2-of-6 in the fourth and Indiana got the win.
Garland has been battling turf toe going back to the regular season, but it was aggravated in Cleveland's first-round series against Miami and he sat out the final two games of that series and the first two of this one. Mobley and Garland were injured on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter of Game 1 against Indiana. Mobley rolled his ankle when he was crowded by Myles Turner while taking a shot and landed on Turner's foot. Hunter suffered a dislocated thumb when Bennedict Mathurin blocked his dunk attempt. After the game, Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said he didn't think the Pacers' plays were dirty but that the officials need to better protecting player safety.

There were attempts to manufacture some drama over the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback decision, but it was the exact outcome we've all known for months. Joe Flacco is the starter. No surprise at all. Thankfully, there's still plenty of actual drama to be sorted out in the Browns' quarterback room. Flacco will start in Week 1 but one look at an absolutely brutal six-game stretch to start the season indicates that it might not be a long-term solution. Cleveland is very likely to use more than one quarterback this season. But due to injuries and an odd four-man derby at quarterback, which was created when the team made the unconventional decision to draft two quarterbacks in the middle rounds, it's uncertain what the order will be behind Flacco. And there's just one more preseason game to go. Joe Flacco expected to play Saturday The Browns have indicated they plan to play Flacco some in the preseason finale. Stefanski wants to use this week to simulate a regular-season week, and to do that he wanted his quarterback in place. Not that anyone paying attention thought it would be anyone but Flacco. So Flacco will play some, but presumably not too much. That means there will be some evaluation time for Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, though that's complicated too. Pickett hasn't played yet in the preseason due to a hamstring injury, but he did practice last week and presumably will be ready to play by Saturday. Sanders' status is unknown after he suffered an oblique injury in warmups before a joint practice last Wednesday. Gabriel, who missed the first preseason game, got the start with Sanders sitting last week. So Flacco hasn't played yet because he was the veteran starter who didn't need preseason reps in the first two games, Pickett hasn't played at all due to injury, Gabriel missed one game and Sanders missed one game. That makes the final decisions on the depth chart a little more challenging. Who will be Browns' backup? From all accounts, the depth chart at Browns camp has been fairly static. Flacco has been treated as the starter. Pickett has missed a lot of camp but there's no indication he's not second in line. Gabriel has been third and, even after a very good showing in Cleveland's first preseason game, Sanders has been fourth. That doesn't mean that is Stefanski's final answer on the depth chart. Gabriel played well last week aside from one pick-6, showing a good understanding of the offense and delivering passes accurately. Sanders' talent level was well above his status as a fifth-round pick, and he showed it in his one preseason game. The Browns will first need to decide how many quarterbacks to keep. It's very rare for a team to keep four, but it's an unusual situation. It doesn't seem likely a team would trade for Pickett, Flacco is already named the starter and trading Gabriel or Sanders a few months after trading them seems unlikely. Then, if the Browns do keep four, Stefanski has to order them. If Flacco gets benched, that's when the order will matter. And if Pickett is up next, the order between Gabriel and Sanders will matter if he gets benched later in the season. Perhaps some of that gets settled in Saturday's preseason finale. We know Flacco will be the Browns' starter to begin the season. The rest still seems unsettled.

Xavien Howard's agent says 4-time Pro Bowler signing with the Colts
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard is signing with the Indianapolis Colts, his agent David Canter announced Monday in a social media post. Colts officials have not yet made an announcement. The 32-year-old Howard was cut by the Miami Dolphins in February 2024 and did not play last year after suffering multiple injuries leading up to his release. Indy believes Howard can make an impact, though, because of his previous history with Lou Anarumo, the Colts new defensive coordinator. Anarumo coached Miami's defensive backs in 2016 and 2017 — Howard's first two seasons in the league. Indy was seeking help in the secondary because of injuries. Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore II has missed time with an injured knee and another starter, Jaylon Jones, was taken off the practice field after hurting his hamstring. Rooke cornerback Justin Walley, a third-round draft pick, also was competing for a starting job until suffering a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament before the preseason opener. And cornerback JuJu Brents is out with a hamstring injury. Howard led the NFL interceptions twice during his career — picking off seven passes in 2018 and adding 10 more in 2020. Browns name Joe Flacco their starting QB
Joe Flacco is a starting quarterback again. The Cleveland Browns announced Monday that Flacco, a 40-year-old veteran, will be the team's QB1. To earn the starting role, Flacco had to beat out four other competitors: Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders and the recently-acquired Tyler Huntley. Flacco has continually held the edge in the race to be named QB1, consistently atop the unofficial depth charts throughout the preseason, followed by Pickett at QB2 and then Gabriel, Sanders, Huntley, and Deshaun Watson all listed at QB3. Pickett, who appeared poised to compete with Flacco for the starting job, suffered a hamstring injury in camp, while Sanders suffered an oblique injury that held him out of Week 2 of the preseason. Flacco was the Baltimore Ravens' starting quarterback for 11 seasons, notably winning a Super Bowl with the team in the 2012 season. He has bounced between four different teams for the past few seasons. Flacco's last stint with Cleveland, in 2023, ended with the veteran winning Comeback Player of the Year. Flacco signed with the Browns late in the season to replace an injured Watson and ended up leading the team to the playoffs. Having previously worked with the Browns, Flacco showed more promise as a Week 1 starter, with his experience and familiarity with the system serving as a leg up over the younger Pickett. At this point in the preseason, the Browns have six quarterbacks under contract: Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, Sanders, Huntley and Watson, who is out again after tearing his Achilles twice last year. The seemingly always-injured Watson (who Browns owner Jimmy Haslam recently admitted was a mistake to trade for) is not expected to be a major part of the quarterback race. That leaves the remaining five. Early in training camp, Flacco and Pickett emerged as clear frontrunners for the job, taking the most first-team snaps and overall showing the most promise as starters. Pickett, a fourth-year player suffered a hamstring injury before returning to training camp a week later. With Pickett out, Flacco, the most experienced of the group, took control of the QB1 spot prior to the first preseason game. In the Browns' first unofficial depth chart prior to the first preseason game, Flacco was listed as QB1, with Pickett as QB2 after returning from injury. Rookies Gabriel and Sanders were listed as third- and fourth-string, respectively. The two rookies have been largely working with backups throughout the start of training camp, with Sanders even working with members of the equipment team. Gabriel has also been limited in practice due to his own hamstring injury, though he still held in front of Sanders in the initial review. And Huntley, a career backup who spent some time with the Browns last season, largely seems to be a last-second addition in case either Gabriel or Pickett's injuries extend longer than hoped. It's unclear whether he will make it to the full roster, especially considering the embarrassment of quarterbacks that Cleveland is holding.
