NATO scrambles jets as Putin launches devastating nuclear bomber attack

Irish Daily Mirror14 hours ago
NATO was compelled to dispatch fighter jets through the night after Vladimir Putin unleashed a devastating fresh barrage on Ukraine employing nuclear-capable bombers that menaced the frontiers of four eastern alliance nations.
The Russian tyrant commanded a hypersonic missile and drone assault that struck the western city of Ivano-Frankivsk overnight in the most ferocious attack of the 1,243-day conflict, alongside strikes on Kyiv and Kharkiv.
Polish military chiefs revealed NATO members were put on "the highest level of alert" and scrambled aircraft for the second occasion in three days as the enormous bombardment approached within mere dozens of miles of several alliance nations' boundaries.
Defence commanders in Poland declared that Polish and other allied countries launched interceptors after the strikes occurred between 60 to 100 miles from the Hungarian, Polish, Romanian and Slovakian frontiers.
They announced in a statement published on social media: "Polish and allied [NATO] air forces have commenced operations, and ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the highest level of alert," reports the Mirror.
"Long-range aviation of the Russian Federation once again launched a massive missile strike on Ukrainian territory," declared the statement from Polish armed forces command.
"In response to this aggressive activity, and with the security of the Republic of Poland in mind, all procedures aimed at strengthening the protection of Polish airspace were immediately initiated," the statement added.
The city of Ivano-Frankivsk has been subjected to the heaviest Russian missile and drone bombardment of the war, executed using strategic, nuclear-capable Tu-95MS bombers. Four individuals were injured in the attack, including a child, an event that local mayor Roman Martsinkiv described as the largest "since the beginning of the full-scale invasion".
Three villages in the Ivano-Frankivsk region fell victim to the Russian war machine. A man lost his life and several others were wounded during a terrifying ten-hour missile and drone assault on Kyiv, with civilians bearing the brunt of the devastation.
Among those injured was a 15 year old girl. The strikes targeted the Artyom military plant and Zhulyany airport in Kyiv, but also impacted multiple districts - Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Obolonskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi - within the capital.
The entrance to the Lukianivska metro station, where people sought refuge during the nightmarish night, was damaged. A nursery school in Kyiv was set ablaze following a Russian missile attack, which also resulted in the city being enveloped in thick, harmful smoke. A dozen strikes hit Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, causing explosions to reverberate throughout the city.
In the Khmelnytskyi region, 20 houses were damaged by Russian strikes. However, Putin was left embarrassed by the extent of resistance and railway disruption caused by Ukrainian strikes. The most severely affected was Moscow's main international airport, Sheremetyevo, where Defence Ministry TV station Zvezda conceded: "People are standing in long lines."
"Many are trying to sleep wherever they can before their flight - some lie down by chairs in the waiting area, others even use decorative 'islands' with grass as temporary sleeping spots."

Russia and Ukraine to hold new peace talks in Turkey on Wednesday, says Zelenskyy

RUSSIA AND UKRAINE will hold new peace talks in Turkey Wednesday as a follow-up to two rounds in Istanbul that made little progress on ending their war, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced. While US President Donald Trump has increased the pressure by giving Russia 50 days to agree on a deal or face sanctions, Zelenskyy spoke only hours after the Kremlin had downplayed hopes for a breakthrough. His announcement of a fresh round of negotiations also came in the wake of a fresh Russian barrage on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, which sparked several fires and damaged an underground air-raid shelter where civilians had taken refuge. 'Today, I discussed with (Ukrainian Security Council chief) Rustem Umerov the preparations for the exchange and another meeting in Turkey with the Russian side. Umerov reported that the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday,' Zelenskyy said in his daily address. Zelenskyy, who proposed fresh talks at the weekend, added that more details would be released on Tuesday. Russia did not immediately confirm the new negotiations. A senior Ukrainian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP earlier that the talks would probably be in Istanbul and focus on further prisoner exchanges and a possible meeting between Zelenskyy and Russia's President Vladimir Putin. At war since Russia's all-out invasion in February 2022, the rival sides met in Istanbul on 16 May and 2 June as Washington stepped up pressure for a deal. But no breakthrough was made. Ukrainian and Russian negotiators only agreed to hold prisoner exchanges. Russia has since launched intense air attacks on Ukraine and seized more frontline territory. The two sides exchanged ideas at the talks on what a peace deal could look like, but remain far apart. Russia has demanded that Ukraine give up four regions, on top of Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. The Kremlin also insists Ukraine give up any idea of joining the NATO military alliance. Ukraine has rejected the demands and expressed doubt that Russia wants a ceasefire. Commenting on the prospects for a breakthrough, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday that the two drafts were 'diametrically opposed' and 'a lot of diplomatic work lies ahead'. Advertisement A bigger US shadow will hang over the latest talks however after Trump last week gave Russia the 50-day deadline – and also said that arms supplies to Ukraine would be resumed. Record drone attacks The Kremlin's latest comments came after Russia launched a massive drone and missile barrage on Kyiv. Russia has fired a record number of drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, in deadly attacks which Kyiv says show Moscow is not serious about halting its invasion. Two people were killed across the country in the latest wave, Zelenskyy said, calling it an 'assault on humanity'. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot arrived in Kyiv for a surprise visit while rescuers were still sifting through the rubble. He held talks with Zelenskyy, discussing air defence, sanctions and weapons production, the Ukrainian president said in a social media post. Six districts of Kyiv came under attack on Monday, sparking fires at a supermarket, multiple residential buildings and a nursery, authorities said. An AFP reporter saw damage to multiple buildings, as well as debris and shattered glass on the streets. The entrance to a metro station where civilians were sheltering from the barrage was also damaged. 'The shelters themselves are no longer entirely safe, as the metro station behind me, which is being used as a shelter for the people of Kyiv, has been targeted,' Barrot said while visiting the damaged station. Russia's invasion has killed tens of thousands, forced millions to flee their homes and devastated much of eastern Ukraine. Russia launched 450 drones and missiles in the overnight attack, according to Ukraine's air force. The strikes, also using hypersonic missiles, targeted Ukraine's military facilities, the Russian army said, claiming it had destroyed three US-made Patriot air defence launchers. - © AFP 2025

UK sanctions 135 oil tankers in Russia's shadow fleet

The UK has placed sanctions on 135 oil tankers in Russia's shadow fleet in a bid to disrupt the flow of money helping Moscow fund the war in Ukraine. A shipping services company and an oil trading firm were also targeted as part of the crackdown on a fleet "responsible for illicitly carrying $24 billion (€21bn) worth of cargo since the start of 2024," the British foreign ministry said in a statement. Security analysts say the fleet of ageing vessels is used by Russia to circumvent international sanctions that ban it from selling oil. Hundreds of vessels have now been sanctioned by the European Union and the UK since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. "New sanctions will further dismantle Putin's shadow fleet and drain Russia's war chest of its critical oil revenues," UK foreign minister David Lammy said. The action came days after "the UK and EU lowered the crude oil price cap further disrupting the flow of oil money into Putin's war chest," the ministry statement added. London also sanctioned Intershipping Services LLC, a company accused of "registering shadow fleet vessels under the banner of the Gabonese flag" and Litasco Middle East DMCC, linked to Russian oil company Lukoil, "for its ongoing role in moving large volumes of Russian oil on shadow fleet vessels". "As Putin continues to stall and delay on serious peace talks, we will not stand idly by," Mr Lammy said. "We will continue to use the full might of our sanctions regime to ratchet up economic pressure at every turn." Earlier, the UK called for a 50-day drive to arm Ukraine after US President Donald Trump gave Moscow 50 days to strike a peace deal with Kyiv.

OnlyFans model left for dead after ‘Dubai Porta Potty' party breaks silence… and reveals horror aftermath of ordeal

A UKRAINIAN OnlyFans model who was left for dead after a Dubai "Porta Potty" party finally broke her silence on her horror ordeal. Maria Kovalchuk, 20, vanished for over a week in March before being discovered unconscious with horrific injuries, including a shattered spine and broken limbs. 8 OnlyFans model Maria Kovalchuk, pictured in Norway with her mother Anna Credit: East2West 8 A large scar is visible across her forehead during an interview with Russian media Credit: East2West 8 The 20-year-old was found seriously wounded in Dubai after going missing for more than a week Credit: East2West She had reportedly "fallen from a height" and was found inches from death after fleeing what some feared was a 'Porta Potty' party — a Maria is now recovering in Norway, where her mother lives, and has told her side of the story for the first time. She also revealed a prominent scar on her forehead after undergoing multiple surgeries. Speaking to Russian news outlet Ostorozhno, Novosti, the model said: 'I mostly use a wheelchair and crutches. Read more world news 'I still have a leg fracture that's healing. 'I'm learning to walk with crutches again, but for now, the wheelchair is my main means of moving around.' There were initial claims Maria had been kidnapped into a sex trafficking ring linked to the notorious 'Porta Potty' scene — disturbing events reportedly involving high-paying UAE clients who degrade women, often influencers, for large sums. But Maria has now denied any involvement of Emirati citizens in her brutal ordeal. Most read in The US Sun She instead accusing the privileged children of wealthy Russian and Ukrainian businessmen of abusing her after a wild party in a Dubai hotel. Dark side of Dubai where Brit influencers are preyed upon for sex & women are brutalised at 'porta potty' parties What are Porta Potty parties? PORTA potty parties are events, usually in the United Arab Emirates, where women are paid large amounts of money to sexually gratify wealthy men - in often highly degrading ways. It's thought that the women are sometimes duped into participating on false pretences - such as the promise of a modelling contract. At the events, men exploit the opportunity to commit depraved acts on the women. The name supposedly comes from the fact that the deeply disturbing acts can include men treating women as human toilets. Women, often from ex-Soviet countries, are lured in by the promise of a glamorous lifestyle and highly paid careers in the oil-rich states. An expert Recruiters often target attractive women with online presences, or even TV stars. Radha Stirling , f ounder and CEO of Detained in Dubai, told The Sun: "It's exploitation disguised as glamour or opportunity. Women, in particular, are offered all sorts of opportunities in Dubai. "They might be offered to come and model, to come and play music, or to expand their career in some way or another. "But what they don't realise is that when they get there, they are essentially at the beck and call of whoever has brought them there. "They're under their complete control and they put themselves in such a risky position where they could end up gang raped, they could end up drugged, they could end up dead." According to Maria, she had missed her flight to Thailand while staying at the luxury Five Jumeirah Village hotel and was offered a place to stay by a 19-year-old man she had recently met at a karaoke bar. He claimed his father could fly her out on a private jet. What began as a seemingly harmless offer allegedly spiraled into a nightmare. 'They started teasing me, why I wasn't drinking,' she said. 'Then some aggressive pushes like pushing in the shoulders began. 'After that, they started making fun of me like 'you belong to us, we will do whatever we want'.' She described how the group began smashing bottles and glass on the floor, making it impossible to move barefoot, and said they took her passport and belongings. One of the girls allegedly left the hotel wearing Maria's clothes, ignoring her pleas. She claims the men 'hinted' they wanted sex — and when she refused, things escalated. 'I did not reciprocate, and this aggression was also heating them up,' she said. Maria says she tried to escape and hid at a nearby construction site — but was tracked down, beaten, and thrown from a ledge. 8 Maria said she is recovering and on the road to being able to walk again Credit: East2West 8 Maria pictured after the attack in a hospital in Dubai Credit: East2West 8 The model accused 'Russian citizens' of beating her, throwing her from ledge and leaving her for dead Credit: East2West 'They practically tore the skin off her scalp, then threw her off a ledge onto the road,' the report states. 'I ran away… I ran to the nearest building, just scared, and ran in, hid there. It was just an unfinished building, open,' Maria recalled. She was eventually found in a hotel bathrobe by a passing driver who called an ambulance. She fell into a coma and remained unconscious for days. CCTV footage that could have shown what happened was allegedly erased after three months, Maria claims, leaving no video evidence. 'The police waited until the cameras were automatically wiped… So now there's no evidence,' she said. Dubai police are said to have detained the accused young men — briefly — but released them the following day, with the case reportedly closed. 'They now claim in their testimonies that they tried to find and help Maria and that she had asked to come to the party herself,' said her mother, Anna. 8 It was initially thought she had attended a porta potty party with local UAE men Credit: East2West 8 She suffered a broken spine and multiple fractures to her limbs Credit: East2West She slammed the official version of events as 'falsified' — including a police claim that Maria had tried to end her life. 'The [Dubai] police investigation indicated that Maria said that she was running away from sexual violence and then went to protect her honour, her dignity, decided to commit suicide,' Anna said. 'This statement was falsified.' She also rejected reports that her daughter had been intoxicated, insisting medical tests showed no alcohol in her system. Maria's mother revealed that her daughter's high-cost medical treatment in Dubai — running into the millions — was paid for by local authorities. 'I don't know how much they paid — the sum was colossal, millions,' she said. Ostorozhno, Novosti reported that in exchange, she was asked not to say "anything that would cast the Emirate's authorities in a negative light". The shocking case comes after months of speculation and media frenzy Initial reports suggested she had been lured into a disturbing sex trap, with some linking her disappearance to the dark world of elite 'Porta Potty' parties in the UAE. A source close to Maria previously said she had been abused not by Emirati men, but by 'Russian citizens who tortured Maria'. 'She was found with a broken spine, arms and legs — and unable to speak,' the insider said. One fellow model described such elite parties as involving 'rape, beatings, and mistreatment,' often under the false promise of money and fame. Before her disappearance, Maria had appeared at a Dubai event supporting jailed Russian sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky, who has been sentenced to five years for allegedly justifying terrorism. His daughter, Ksenia, previously said: 'She will be able to walk… This is all very good news. But the details will come later, when she leaves the country.'
