STARSAND ISLAND Is Primed to Redefine Romance in the Life Sim Genre

Starsand Island has quickly become one of the most anticipated cozy games of the year. Following the release of its latest trailer this week, hopeful players are especially excited about the game's clean, anime-style graphics, adorable animals and, of course, romance.
While dating is always a topic of interest going into any farming and life sim, what makes Starsand Island so special is how it breaks genre traditions with a more realistic approach. I was skeptical at first, since titles like last year's SunnySide kind of dropped the ball in a similar attempt. But Seed Lab's developing life sim could take genre romance in a new direction. A More Realistic Affection System Seed Lab
When it comes to the farming and life sim genres, your decisions have always affected how your relationships with dateable NPCs play out. Some titles, like Harvest Moon and Fields of Mistria , lock you into a will-they-won't-they narrative until your relationship is strong enough to decide whether you'll remain friends or pursue a romantic partnership, but dating in Starsand Island seems to work a little differently.

Developer and publisher Seed Lab says the game's NPCs aren't just 'flat characters' or 'cold quest tools.' Rather, they're fleshed-out personalities with their own memories, emotions and aspirations. In taking this approach, helping out with personal goals and appreciating the little things in life foster your bonds and encourage NPCs to evolve. As you get to know them, they also get to know you . This way, every interaction is an opportunity to take a step forward — or back. Taking the Next Step Seed Lab
Starsand Island 's romance system relies on a more realistic rule of progression than others. In Seed Lab's latest reveal trailer, we got a closer look at the character profile for an islander named Pastelle. And while in-game text is still in need of a bit more polish, relationship milestones are already clear-cut.
When you're just getting to know the island's singles, you can start off by gifting them items they might like. This is standard practice in the genre, and most will find this custom familiar. But once you reach two hearts, you can then go on an outing together. Your relationship continues to move forward in this way, with room visits unlocked next, then requests and, finally, cohabitation. That's not all that makes the developing title a standout ahead of launch, though.

Voice acting for NPCs and the player may not be entirely unheard of in the farming and life sim genres. But–at least for me — there isn't a title that immediately comes to mind. In most cases, you carry on conversations in silence, save for a change in music. Starsand Island breaks tradition and stands out here.
In the affection system trailer released by Seed Lab this week, we heard a good bit of spoken dialogue from the masculine base farmer and Pastelle. Lines were delivered between scenes of all the activities you can share with the island's most eligible. This includes watching TV, taking a seat on a backyard swing together, riding your bikes through town, bathing in hot springs — and more that's yet to be revealed.
That said, it looks like these lively conversations may be limited to cutscenes. Traditional dialogue (with options) is still very much a thing here. And judging by the clips we saw in the new trailer, there's plenty of room to flirt, offer advice and lighten the mood with humor as you grow closer with the folks around Starsand Island.
Starsand Island will release in late 2025 on PC (Steam).

Classic Anime ‘Angel's Egg' Comes To Theaters This November

Courtesy of those nice people at GKIDS, the classic anime Angel's Egg will see a limited theatrical release this November. The reason this is noteworthy is that Angel's Egg was originally an OVA, which meant it was a direct video release in Japan back in the 80s. It never saw a theatrical release. Moreover, this new version has been remastered in 4K by the director Mamoru Oshii, so it already looks beyond pristine, as the trailer below attests. Angel's Egg is also a fascinating anime because not only was it conceived by Oshii, but also by renowned artist Yoshitaka Amano. The result was and is a unique and haunting anime, full of abstract concepts and visuals. While Angel's Egg wasn't exactly successful when it was released in Japan back in 1985, it has since garnered a passionate cult following in the decades since. Both in Japan and abroad. It's also worth highlighting the anime's musical score, penned by Yoshihiro Kanno, not to be confused with Yoko Kanno. The score beautifully complements a very complex set of visuals and elevates the whole anime to be almost dreamlike. The premiere of this new 4K remaster of Angel's Egg will be held at this year's New York Film Festival, and then given a limited theatrical release on November 19. The anime will also be available to stream via HBO Max on September 1. Follow me on X, Facebook and YouTube. I also manage Mecha Damashii and am currently featured in the Giant Robots exhibition currently touring Japan.

Employee discovers original gaming console in company trash: 'They still sell for quite a bit'

If you're a video game enthusiast, you'd be surprised at what you can find in your local e-waste dumpster. One Reddit user shared their haul in r/OriginalXbox, much to the envy of commenters. What happened? The original poster stated that they found an Xbox, complete with several games and controllers, in the e-waste dumpster outside their workplace. "It baffles me someone would put this thing in an e-waste when they still sell for quite a bit in Australia as gaming wasn't too big here when this console came out," the OP wrote. A photo shows the incredible find, and despite its age, the system looks relatively new. However, the poster noted that the system does have a few glitches, such as needing to power on the Xbox with the eject button, the fan being loud, and discs not always being read correctly. Still, commenters assured the OP that some of these issues could be fixed with a little TLC. "Open it up, YouTube videos, replace the capacitors, clean it up," one person suggested. "To me that's just sad how they throw away these retro games. Some ppl just don't understand how good these old game consoles are now smh," another said. "The stuff people throw away sometimes is just wild," someone else shared. "No doubt countless perfectly operational valuable and priceless things go to waste all the time." Why does e-waste matter? Electronic waste is one of the worst forms of pollution because it leaches toxic metals into the air and soil. In some ways, it's worse than plastic because of the extent of chemical pollution and the fact that e-waste is often more challenging and costly to recycle. Because of these difficulties in handling e-waste, only about a quarter is recycled worldwide each year, according to a United Nations report. In turn, the global economy suffers from the loss of valuable metals such as gold, copper, and silver. What do you usually do with your old electronics? Store them at home Donate them Trade them for cash Throw them away Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Sircel reported that an estimated $57 billion is lost annually when these materials aren't recovered, leading to higher labor and production costs. If electronics were properly recycled, it would put much less strain on the environment and benefit businesses and consumers as well. Electronic waste also harms humans, especially in developing countries, since the majority of electronics are shipped there for processing. Women and children who work in informal recycling centers are often exposed to thousands of harmful chemicals, which can result in lung and reproductive problems, per the World Health Organization. Are companies doing anything about this? Several major retailers, including Amazon, Apple, and Best Buy, offer trade-in programs that allow customers to exchange unwanted electronics for perks such as store credit or cash back. If the traded devices aren't eligible for credit or cannot be refurbished, they're recycled for free. What else is being done about e-waste? Technological solutions for electronic pollution are also springing up. For instance, some companies are adding mechanical arms to recycling facilities to increase productivity and efficiency, and artificial intelligence-powered robots are also being employed to handle more e-waste. If you have any gadgets hiding in your junk drawers, consider sending them to the startup Trashie with its innovative Tech Take Back Box. It will take care of recycling the items and give you awesome rewards in return, including discounts on shoes and clothing, and food delivery credits. There are endless ways to make money off your old electronics, so choose the method that works best for you. Big Updates for Battlefield 6 Open Beta in Second Weekend

The Battlefield 6 Beta is raging with players free to jump into the fray now through the end of Sunday, Aug. 17. As the second weekend of the preview period, there are a few changes that open up the beta with more modes, maps and play options. Those enjoying the beta on PS5 have to be subscribed to PS Plus to play online, but for their trouble, they're getting 2x XP and can earn an exclusive skin, as the official PlayStation account posted on X. For all players, here are the changes for Battlefield 6 Beta's weekend two. Battlefield 6 Beta new maps and modes While the first weekend introduced the maps Liberation Peak, Siege of Cairo and Iberian Offensive, the second weekend has added Empire State, a close-quarters map mixing unfinished buildings and blacktop basketball courts for players to take to the New York City streets. As for new modes, the first weekend featured Conquest (as well as a Closed Weapons Conquest version that locks certain guns to specific classes), Domination, King of the Hill and Breakthrough. The second weekend adds Rush, Squad Deathmatch and several playlists that combine a few of these modes into a rotation. On the second weekend, players will also get to select which maps and modes they want to queue up for with Custom Search. Note that this will ensure that "matchmaking will prioritize putting you in a match with this combo [of maps and modes], if available," according to a Battlefield 6 Beta information page -- which suggests that players may end up getting stuck with maps and modes they haven't selected if there aren't other options. EA DICE Broken down by day, with some modes and playlists rotating in and out, the BF6 Open Beta's weekend two looks like this: Thursday, Aug. 14 -- Day One Conquest Rush Attack & Defend playlist (Breakthrough, Rush) Close Quarters playlist for smaller maps (Domination, King of the Hill) Closed Weapons All-Out Warfare for larger maps (Conquest, Breakthrough) Friday, Aug. 15 -- Day Two Conquest Squad Deathmatch Close Quarters playlist (Domination, King of the Hill, Squad Deathmatch) All-Out Warfare (Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush) Closed Weapons All-Out Warfare (Conquest, Breakthrough) Saturday, Aug. 16 and Sunday, Aug. 17 -- Days Three and Four Conquest Close Quarters (Domination, King of the Hill, Squad Deathmatch) All-Out Warfare (Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush) Closed Weapons All-Out Warfare (Conquest, Breakthrough) Publisher EA noted on the beta's website that this playlist rotation is just for gathering player feedback and won't be a feature in the final version of the game.
