Spanish hotel gives defiant statement as grandad dies eating 'half-cooked' chicken

A luxury Fuerteventura hotel has broken its silence after a Brit tourist died from suspected food poisoning when he tucked into "half-cooked" chicken on holiday.

Bosses at the plush four-star Occidental Jandia Playa insist they follow "strict food hygiene and safety" rules and have hit back with a defiant statement after an inquest heard Leslie Green, from Bolton, Greater Manchester, caught deadly salmonella at the all-inclusive resort, reports the Mirror.

The hearing was told the 70-year-old dad ate undercooked chicken during his stay at Occidental Jandia Playa on Fuerteventura, one of Spain's Canary Islands last October. Days later he fell ill with severe diarrhoea and his condition quickly worsened.

Mr Green, a retired delivery driver, had only eaten at the hotel with his wife Julie, 60, during their trip. Rochdale Coroner's Court ruled he died from food poisoning caused by partially cooked chicken.

However, the Barceló Hotel Group, which runs the Occidental Jandia Playa, said yesterday no salmonella has been detected at the hotel in the last twelve months.
The spokesperson said: "We also hold certificates from the aforementioned external audit company confirming that no salmonella has been detected at the hotel in the last twelve months. These audits and controls reflect our ongoing commitment to the health and safety of guests."
The Barcelo Hotel Group, founded in Spain in 1981, said it "deeply regrets the death". Its statement in full reads: "The Barceló Hotel Group deeply regrets the death of a guest at our Fuerteventura hotel in November 2024.

Mr and Mrs Green were on a Jet2 holiday when tragedy struck. Jet2 said it would be "inappropriate" to comment due to an ongoing legal claim, but offered its "thoughts and condolences" to the Green family.
Speaking after the inquest, Mrs Green, a retired nurse, said: "I still struggle to comprehend how we went on holiday, but Leslie didn't come home... He was my best friend and life without him will never be the same."

As reported by the Daily Record, the BBC has announced the return of Balamory after its last episode aired in June 2005. New episodes of the programme will debut next year, with original stars reprising their roles. Julie Wilson Nimmo, Andrew Agnew, Kim Tserkezie, and Julie Cadzow are set to return as Miss Hoolie, PC Plum, Penny Pocket, and Edie McCredie respectively. The revival will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and CBeebies in 2026. In anticipation of Balamory's comeback, property experts at Sell House Fast have revealed how much homes in the area cost. They also investigated how prices have changed in the years since the show has been on air. According to Sell House Fast, the average cost of a detached house in Tobermory is £300,083. Meanwhile, semi-detached houses are priced at £255,000 on average. The experts also found that most homes sold in Tobermory over the past year were flats. These cost an average of £139,750. Overall, in the past year, property in Tobermory sold for an average of £221,947. This is slightly lower than the national Scottish average of £223,657. Sell House Fast stated that property prices in the town peaked in 2008. According to the experts, this indicates that the popularity of Balamory had "little impact" on prices, as the show ended years earlier. Jack Malnick, MD of Sell House Fast, commented: "With the filming of Balamory returning to the vibrant Scottish seaside town of Tobermory, residents and prospective buyers will be wondering if the show will impact the housing market. "Whilst homes can indeed increase in value when they feature in TV shows, it isn't always the case—and I don't see it being the case here. "House prices in Tobermory peaked in 2008, years after the show originally aired, which suggests that it had little impact on property prices in the town. "However, the show's return may well lead to an increase in a demand for short term accommodation in the town. Balamory had two million weekly viewers at its peak, and if the reboot has the same success, many young fans may want to visit the real-life town, offering an increase in tourist revenue and leading to more homeowners to capitalise on this demand by renting out their properties as holiday homes." For those looking to visit the charming town, in terms of holiday lets, there are plenty of options to choose from around Tobermory. One of these is a "beautiful bothy with sea views" that sleeps up to two guests, which can be booked for £375 for two nights through Airbnb. The traditional stone cottage sits high up in the town, with views out over the sea from the garden patio. Inside, there is a double bed "in a cosy nook" and a wood-burner for chilly evenings. Elsewhere, there is a flat to rent in one of the iconic buildings along Tobermory's waterfront. Also available through Airbnb, it can be booked for £280 for three nights. Sleeping up to two visitors, the apartment features one bedroom with an en-suite shower room. There is also a large living room, kitchen, and dining room at front of the building that offers "fantastic views" according to the listing. Love Island star Shaughna Phillip recently returned from Alicante, Spain, but had a horrible experience at the airport on her way back to the UK Shaughna Phillips detailed her travelling nightmare while on the way back from Alicante Airport this week. The Love Island star was on holiday with her family when the incident unfolded, prompting her to take to her Instagram Stories to share travel advice with her many followers. ‌ The TV personality revealed there was an abnormal number of travellers at the airport, with 'snaking queues' reaching the back of the airport. However, she soon discovered a travel hack that got her entire family through the line without having to wait for hours. ‌ "I've had loads of messages asking me about Alicante Airport and what happened because they're going to be using it. So, I thought I would jump on here quickly and tell you all because I did have a solid bit of advice," she said. It comes after a Brit abroad slams all-inclusive hotel food asking 'what on earth is this?' ‌ She had a flight at 11:20am and arrived at the airport at 9am, but still had to 'run to the gates'. The reality star said they were sat by the gate for only five minutes before the flight started boarding. "So we had no time, no shops, no wee breaks," the TV personality revealed. "When we got there it was like I've never see it before. "It was like Selfridge's on Christmas morning with people queueing everywhere and you couldn't even tell where the queue started that you needed to be in. "The queue for the EasyJet desk was about 30-35 minutes queue and it snaked like it was way out the barriers to where it was supposed to be. And that wasn't just EasyJet either." ‌ The star said every single check-in and baggage drop desk was busy "apart from Jet2 because nothing beats a Jet2 holiday". The star went on to reveal there was another long queue that went "all the way back to the end of the airport". She left her father-in-law in the queue to walk around with her baby and noticed there was a VIP fast track that bypassed the whole queue if travellers paid 10 euros to get through. Shaughna said there was a black sign with a QR code at the front of the queue that has the information on the VIP queue. ‌ Shaughna returned from her holiday this week and told fans she was "ready for an exciting few weeks/months". She said: "I feel like my life has somewhat been put on hold for the last few years, and it's finally coming to an end, only good times ahead." The star later returned to her page to share her reality check moment. She wrote: "One minute you're laying by the pool and the next minute you're in Kennington getting a blood test, life comes at you fast."

"To be fair, they deserved it," her 25-year-old daughter Ellie Ikin told the MailOnline. "They were never down there until at least 3pm. Every morning was a struggle. "We were annoyed because the people who were doing it didn't sit around the pool until later in the afternoon. Her mum's bold measures made it easier for people to find a spot by the pool the next morning. But the hoggers continued to put their towels down the next night regardless. Ellie blasted these people's actions as "selfish". "I completely understand the need of getting a bed early, but 1.30am putting towels out when you have no intentions of being there in the morning is ridiculous," she said. It is not the only sunbed-related drama to have drawn attention in recent months. One tourist was furious after vigilantes swiped towels from a sun lounger she had been given permission because of her disability. Wheelchair user Elaine Simpson, 77, from Manchester, had been holidaying near Magaluf to celebrate her wedding anniversary. But her plans to enjoy the special day by the poolside were ruined after a vigilantes nabbed the towels they had used to save their spaces. She had been given the permission of hotel staff to save a spot this way because of her disability. Elaine previously told the Sun: "We could never have made it down for 9am to get a sunbed.
