KUDAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) intercepted a Vietnamese fishing vessel carrying six crew members in waters some 13 nautical miles northeast of Pulau Tigabu, near Pitas, on Monday. MMEA Kudat Maritime Zone Director Hasbullah Omar said the interception followed a tip-off from the public. 'Upon receiving the information, patrol boat Cenderawasih 10, which was conducting routine operations, was immediately dispatched to the area to investigate,' he said in a statement Wednesday. The vessel was spotted around 5.50am, and when approached, they attempted to flee but were successfully stopped by the enforcement team. Aboard the vessel were six Vietnamese men aged between 27 and 44, all of whom failed to produce any valid identification documents. 'A further inspection found fishing equipment made of iron, believed to be used for catching sea cucumbers (balat), as well as some 300 litres of diesel. 'All six individuals, along with the vessel and its contents, were taken into custody for further investigation. The total value of the seized items is estimated to be close to RM2 million,' said Hasbullah. The case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/63. Hasbullah urged local communities, particularly those in the maritime sector, to assist enforcement efforts by reporting any suspicious or illegal activity at sea to the Kudat Operations Centre at 088-611858 or the MMEA emergency line at 999, both of which operate 24 hours a day. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? JOHOR BARU: Two Vietnamese nationals, a man and a woman, have been charged in a Magistrate's Court here with drug trafficking and possession. On the drug trafficking charge, male accused Lee Yuen Fei, 45, and Trieu Thi Mai, 22, are alleged to have trafficked 38,022g (38kg) of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) at 8.20pm at Jalan Seri Orkid 25, Taman Seri Orkid on June 14. Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Russian strikes target Ukrainian towns and cities on a daily basis. (Ukrainian emergency service/AP pic) KYIV: Russian airstrikes killed one person and wounded two others in Ukraine's southern region of Kherson, local officials said today. One person was killed in a strike on the village of Tavriyske, the region's governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, said on Telegram. Guided bombs hit a residential building, wounding another man, aged 34, Kherson's military administration said. And in the Korabelny district overnight Russian bombing wounded a woman in her 70s, Kherson council reported on Telegram. Russian strikes target Ukrainian towns and cities on a daily basis, while Moscow's troops have for weeks been edging forward in the northeast Sumy region. On the diplomatic front, talks are stalled despite pressure from the US. Kyiv has accused Moscow of deliberately sabotaging a peace deal in order to prolong its full-scale offensive and to seize more territory. Russia occupies around a fifth of Ukraine and claims to have annexed four Ukrainian regions as its own since launching its invasion in 2022 – in addition to Crimea, which it captured in 2014. Yesterday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an accord with the Council of Europe to set up a special tribunal to try top officials over Russia's invasion of Ukraine. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia Airlines Passenger Fined RM650 For Bomb Joke At Hanoi Airport
Subscribe to our FREE A Vietnamese man was fined VND 4 million (RM650) after making a bomb joke to Malaysia Airlines staff at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi recently. The incident occurred when the passenger disembarked from Malaysia Airlines flight MH752 from Kuala Lumpur on 22 June. When a flight attendant asked about the black case he was carrying, the man responded with a single word: 'Bomb.' The remark immediately triggered the airport's full security protocol. The passenger was escorted off the aircraft and detained for questioning by multiple agencies, including immigration police, aviation security, airport police, emergency command centre officers, Malaysia Airlines representatives, and Vietnam Airport Ground Services staff. A thorough inspection of the passenger's luggage and person was conducted – the black case in question was found to contain a computer keyboard and mouse. No dangerous or prohibited items were discovered. Passenger Apologises, Pays Fine The passenger later acknowledged that his comment was an ill-conceived joke made out of ignorance, issued an apology to the authorities and was subsequently fined. Following the incident, Noi Bai International Airport released a public statement on Facebook, emphasising that jokes about bombs, explosives, or weapons are strictly prohibited in airports and on aircraft. The airport noted that such remarks trigger emergency response measures, can cause fear and panic among passengers, and result in unnecessary delays. Officials urged passengers to cooperate with aviation staff during inspections and to educate family members, particularly children, about avoiding jokes related to sensitive security topics. 'Anyone who violates these rules will be held fully accountable for the consequences,' the airport stated. Security protocols at international airports are taken seriously, with even seemingly harmless jokes carrying significant consequences.
