Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner R.V. Karnan has assured that roads damaged by continual rains will be repaired in time for the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities.
Addressing a convergence meeting he chaired on Monday to review the festival arrangements, Mr. Karnan said the repair works are already underway on roads damaged by heavy rains, and any pending works on National Highways used for idol processions will also be completed in time.
He called upon the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi and officials of all concerned government departments to extend their full cooperation to ensure the upcoming Ganesh festival is conducted smoothly and in a peaceful atmosphere across the city.
The Ganesh festivities are scheduled to begin on August 27 this year, to conclude with idol immersions on September 6.
Mr. Karnan stated that, as in previous years, GHMC, the police, and other government agencies will work in close coordination and assured that more cranes will be deployed at immersion sites to ensure quick and safe idol immersion. Zonal-level coordination meetings will also be conducted to ensure seamless execution of plans.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Vikram Singh Mann shared several safety guidelines, stressing the need for quality materials and wiring for pandals due to possible heavy rains, height restrictions for idols to avoid traffic disruptions, installation of at least one CCTV camera per pandal, and dedicated volunteer teams at large pandals. He also recommended separate entry and exit routes for visitors at major pandals and timely commencement of key processions, including that of Khairatabad and Balapur, to facilitate smooth immersions.
Members of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi also presented suggestions to officials for the smooth conduct of the festival.

Stray dog rumours fuel Hyderabad mob attack, cops allegedly refuse complaint

By the time a man claiming to be a local councillor in Hyderabad's Ameenpur walked into the bloodied aftermath of a mob assault as a mediator on August 5, a 31-year-old woman and her friend were already shaken and injured. But what the mediator allegedly told them cut just as deep as the blows they had endured: "Tumhe jo bhi legal action lena hai le lo. Hum dekh lenge." (Whatever legal action you have to take, take it — we will see.)advertisementFor Panchami Bhattacharjee, who has spent three years feeding and caring for stray dogs in PJR Enclave, Miyapur, it was a moment of chilling clarity — that the violence they had suffered on the street might be only the confrontation began a few minutes earlier, at around 9 am, when dogcatchers from a private agency in Vanasthalipuram — nearly 50 kilometers from the area — arrived in their lane. Out of seven dogs they targeted, four had already been neutered by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials. Panchami and her friend Karan Surail began asking for the official directive and assurance of humane treatment.A local man and woman soon intervened, accusing the dogs of being a menace, citing a fatal dog attack. But the case they referred to had taken place a month earlier in Neredmet, kilometres away. "They couldn't give any detail of any dog bite incident here," Panchami told India Today couple left. Moments later, the pair were surrounded by 25 to 30 visuals. However, he was soon overpowered.'When I got up, I saw Karan on the ground with six men kicking him. I pulled him back.'The beating stopped only when Panchami began screaming hysterically and Karan's face was covered in blood. No one from the crowd intervened. That's when the councillor appeared and issued his warning.A FOUR-HOUR WAIT FOR HELPAt 9:30 am, Panchami called the emergency number. Responders initially refused to come for a 'dog incident.' Only when she said she was being beaten did they agree — but minutes before arrival, they claimed the area fell under Ameenpur police and backed police arrived at 1 pm. "They said there was already a case against us. Officer Ramachandar K asked, 'What is your relationship with your friend?' and left after five minutes," she delay, police claimed, was due to a shift change, according to Panchami. No woman officer was sent, she further later asked for all video evidence but have given no update. Even after Archana Hospital filed medico-legal cases with Chanda Nagar police over the physical assault, there has been no and her friend Karan went to the Patancheru police station today, which has jurisdiction over the Ameenpur police station. However, the DSP-ranked officer there was accompanied by an official from the Ameenpur police station — the same one Panchami had allegedly approached earlier for a follow-up without to both victims, the DSP-ranked officer still refused to register a case, completely ignoring the fact that a woman had been beaten up. 'All he said was that the locals were acting out of fear of a possible dog-bite incident in the future,' Panchami further Today Online reached out to the Hyderabad Police, who have yet to respond to the MEETS INACTIONPanchami says the attack shows how misinformation — in this case, an unrelated dog attack from another part of the city — can be weaponised. But what has stayed with her more than the violence itself is the message sent by those in power and those tasked with upholding the law."One news report from far away was enough to turn a crowd against us," she said."But the real damage was knowing that the police delayed, questioned us instead of investigating the case and pursuing justice, and that a councillor made it clear we'd have to fight this alone," a morose Panchami and Karan incident came to light as the Supreme Court formed a three-judge bench to review the issue of stray dogs in the Delhi-NCR region, amid outrage from animal welfare activists and NGOs over its earlier order.- EndsMust Watch

Bengaluru dry days alert: Liquor ban on Independence Day and Janmashtami – check full list for August here

Bengaluru is set to witness two consecutive dry days next week, with a liquor ban on August 15 for Independence Day and again on August 16 for Janmashtami. The restrictions will remain in force for a full 24 hours on both days and will apply to all bars, pubs, restaurants, wine stores, and liquor shops across the city. Officials said the decision aims to maintain law and order during public gatherings and festive events. Residents have been advised to plan their purchases ahead of time, as no exemptions will be granted. Reportedly, Independence Day on August 15 is a compulsory dry day across the country. In Karnataka, Janmashtami on August 16 is also traditionally observed as a dry day, though it is not a nationwide rule. An official confirmation for Janmashtami is expected soon, but past practice suggests restrictions will be enforced. Later in the month, Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27 is also likely to be a dry day in Bengaluru. The festival, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, will continue for ten days, bringing cultural programmes, processions, and community gatherings to several neighbourhoods. It will conclude with Anant Chaturdashi on 6 September, a day marked by grand idol immersion ceremonies in designated water bodies. This day typically draws massive crowds, as devotees bid farewell to Lord Ganesha amid music, dance, and vibrant processions. Although only the first day of the festival is officially a dry day, the Excise Department may impose additional restrictions during the immersion period. A temporary ban around visarjan could be implemented to maintain law and order, manage traffic, and ensure safety during the high footfall at immersion points.

CV Anand holds review meet on arrangements for Ganesh festivities

Hyderabad: In view of the upcoming Vinayaka Chaturthi festival, Hyderabad City police commissioner C.V. Anand held a preparatory video conference regarding the installation and immersion of Ganesh idols. The commissioner discussed the matter in detail with all Hyderabad City Police personnel, from Sub-Inspectors to the Additional Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad city. It has been observed that for the past three years, the Milad un Nabi festival has coincided with the Ganesh Navaratri celebrations. Since this year is no exception, CV Anand gave detailed instructions on the precautions to be taken to ensure both events proceed smoothly. During the conference, the Commissioner provided comprehensive instructions on the precautions to be taken during the installation of the idols, how to coordinate with the mandap organizers until the time of immersion, and the security arrangements required during the immersion processions. He instructed all Sector S.I.s and Police Station S.H.O.s to collect complete details of the mandaps in their respective areas. This information will facilitate geo-tagging, which will be useful for managing security arrangements and tracking the movement of idols during the immersion procession. The Commissioner further advised that meetings should be held frequently at the police station level with mandap organizers to coordinate and provide them with the necessary facilities. Vikram Singh Mann, Additional CP Law and Order; P. Viswa Prasad, Additional CP Crime; Joel Davis, Joint CP Traffic; and other officials virtually attended the meeting.
