USA Today4 days ago
The Los Angeles Chargers hit on second-round 2024 NFL draft pick Ladd McConkey. As a rookie, McConkey broke all sorts of team records for Los Angeles.
The former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver became the Los Angeles Chargers' all-time leading rookie receiver in receptions and receiving yards. He finished the 2024 season with a team-best 82 receptions for 1,149 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. McConkey had the 10th-most receiving yards and 19th-most receptions of any NFL player. He helped Los Angeles go 11-6
McConkey's record setting season continued in the playoffs. Los Angeles fell to the Houston Texans in an ugly 32-12 loss, but McConkey set the NFL rookie receiving yardage record (for an individual playoff game) with 197 receiving yards, nine receptions, and one touchdown.
"A damn good one," said the Chargers on social media when describing Ladd McConkey's rookie season. McConkey is already drawing recognition across the NFL. The league ranked him as the No. 100 best player in the NFL for his 2024 season.
McConkey and the Chargers start training camp on July 17. McConkey should have an even better sophomore campaign in the NFL.
The Chargers' regular season opener will be played in Brazil against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. ET.

Bronny James on his main focus this offseason

This is a big offseason for Bronny James, the son of LeBron James. He had a promising finish to his rookie year this past season in the G League, and working hard and smart on his game this summer is of paramount importance if he is going to have any chance of ever becoming a rotation player in the NBA. He didn't play in the Los Angeles Lakers' first game of the California Classic on Saturday, but he is expected to participate at some point, and summer league play should give a glimpse into what type of player he will be this coming season. Advertisement He told reporters that he is focusing on the defensive end of the court and on becoming a difference-maker in that department. 'It's definitely made me think about being more aggressive on that end of the floor, but I can't lose that defensive drive that will get me on the floor because there's gonna be guys that can score 15, 20 a game,' the younger James said. 'I'm most likely not going to be that guy right now. To get myself on the floor, I've got to be a defensive menace. That's my main focus, getting conditioned this year. It's been shown that I know how to score the ball a little bit, I'm staying true to that, but also focusing on the defensive end.' While the 20-year-old could become a spark plug on the offensive end and has shown signs of doing just that, he has been lauded over the last couple years for his defense, which could be more developed than his offensive game at this point. With his ample athleticism and defensive instincts, perhaps he could carve out a reputation as someone who makes a living on that end of the floor. Is a breakout season coming for Jets RB Braelon Allen?

New York Jets rookie running back Braelon Allen was among the team's surprise performers in 2024. The fourth-round selection quickly earned reps in a backfield that was supposed to be dominated by Breece Hall. Allen concluded his first season by rushing for 334 yards and two touchdowns, adding 148 receiving yards and an additional score to his offensive totals. There's reason to believe Allen will continue elevating his performance as a sophomore in 2025. New offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand helped oversee a Detroit Lions offense that leaned on two running backs to be productive. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn also had a front-row seat to the David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs tandem. Advertisement Pro Football Focus recently compiled a list of five sophomore players who are second-year breakout candidates for fantasy football purposes. Allen made the cut. "Allen averaged a low 3.6 yards per carry, but he graded well thanks to his excellent play in short-yardage situations," Nathan Jahnke wrote. "Allen ran the ball 16 times when the Jets needed two yards or less for a first down, and he converted 14 of them. He averaged 3.3 yards per carry on those runs, while the league average was 3.2. His 90.0 rushing grade on those runs was the best among running backs. "The goal is for Allen to be the next David Montgomery. The coaching staff needs to use him in that role, the offense needs to play well enough for Allen to score enough points, and Justin Fields can't be used on the tush push. While that is a lot, there is similarly a lot for any other late-round running back, and this one doesn't require an injury to a starter." It's fair to assume the Jets will attempt to use Allen in the Montgomery role. Expect a run-heavy offense with Engstrand running the show, and a dual-threat Justin Fields under center. Allen could enjoy a breakout campaign in a hyper-specific role. This article originally appeared on Jets Wire: PFF: Breakout season coming for Jets RB Braelon Allen

Sean Payton praises Broncos' 3rd-year weapon

Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims made an instant impact on special teams as a rookie, earning a Pro Bowl nod and second-team All-Pro selection as a returner in 2023. Mims did not have a large role on offense, but that changed during his second season. The 23-year-old speedster ended last season with 545 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns (a big increase from his one offensive touchdown in 2023). 'We saw him take a big step in the middle of the year," Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Mims this spring. As the team started giving Mims more snaps -- including reps at running back -- he flourished. 'I've said this to you before: Confidence is born out of demonstrated ability," Payton said last month. "You guys have done this long enough. You've seen people, athletes grow up right in front of your eyes. That began not just at the end of the season. That began early part of the middle [of the] season. You could see it and certainly feel it now.' Mims made the Pro Bowl again last season and was named a first-team All-Pro. Through his first two years in the NFL, Mims has 2,263 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns. He has emerged as an all-around weapon for Denver, and Mims continues to trend up going into Year 3.
