Kohima, Jul 22 (PTI) Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday inspected the landslide-affected stretch of National Highway (NH)-2 at Phesama near Kohima and called for immediate and long-term measures to restore connectivity and prevent future disruptions.
During the visit, the CM expressed concern over the recurring landslides in the area and acknowledged the challenges posed by Nagaland's hilly and landslide-prone terrain.
'National Highways are the lifelines of a nation, essential for connectivity and economic activity," Rio said, while stressing that the state government is working closely with implementing agencies to ensure early restoration.
'This is not a one-time issue; it has been happening since our childhood. The landslides and road obstructions are a lifelong challenge," he said while suggesting that an alternative route be developed with full NH specifications to handle heavy traffic; otherwise, village roads would collapse under the load of highway traffic.
Interacting with officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Rio urged the use of concrete, iron rods, and if possible, piling to strengthen the affected portions.
'Don't do temporary work. Construct a proper CC bridge and, if required, go for a flyover so that debris can pass below without obstructing the road," he stated.
Executive Director of NHIDCL, R P Singh, apprised the chief minister that the underlying field area had turned into slush due to continuous rains, making it difficult for restoration equipment to enter.
He said that the road had sunk impacting a 37-metre stretch, and that if weather conditions permit, temporary restoration could be completed by August 18.
Rio acknowledged the difficulty in carrying out major work during the monsoon but instructed agencies to create a temporary passage and begin concrete work once the rains subside. 'The real landslip is expected during August-September, so a long-term strategy must be in place," he added.
The chief minister also flagged the road's strategic importance, noting that it connects to the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama—venue of the annual Hornbill Festival.
'Last year, repairs continued until the last minute. This time we must plan well in advance and coordinate with NHIDCL, the district administration, and other stakeholders," he said.
Rio also cautioned against poor disposal practices during landslip clearance and advised that debris must be properly managed without damaging nearby structures.
Reflecting on the state's condition, Rio humorously remarked, 'Nagaland has only two seasons—mud season and dust season—due to human negligence," urging all stakeholders to work in unison for better planning and disaster preparedness.
'We must not wait for the last minute. Let's all be prepared," the chief minister added.
Deputy Chief Ministers T R Zeliang and Y Patton and legislators S Keoshu Yimkhiung, Kropol Vitsu and Kevipodi Sophie accompanied the chief minister during the inspection.
The stretch of highway connecting Kohima to Imphal NH-2 in Southern Angami region had completely sunk on June 2 following heavy rain.
Meanwhile, on the request of the Phesama Village Council chairman Beizo M Kuotsu, the chief minister directed the Deputy Commissioner Kohima to conduct a proper survey to extend disaster compensation for damaged paddy fields and farms of the affected villagers. PTI NBS NBS RG

Academic ambit of Kakori Train Action must be expanded: Descendants of revolutionaries

Lucknow, With the historic Kakori Train Action on the verge of turning 100, descendants of some of the revolutionaries who took part in the act feel that the academic ambit of the event must be expanded so that the future generation knows about the hardship their forefathers had to undergo to gain Independence from the British. Academic ambit of Kakori Train Action must be expanded: Descendants of revolutionaries On August 9, 1925, Indian freedom fighters looted the treasury of the British government in Kakori to buy arms for their revolution against the British Raj. In 1927, Ram Prasad 'Bismil', Ashfaqullah Khan, Thakur Roshan Singh and Rajendranath Lahiri were hanged to death by the British government for their involvement in the incident. In 2021, the Uttar Pradesh government renamed the revolutionary event as the Kakori Train Action. The new name was used in official communications to refer to the event, which was usually described as the 'Kakori train robbery' or the 'Kakori train conspiracy'. Afaqullah Khan, the grandson of revolutionary Ashfaqullah Khan told PTI, "This historic incident is confined barely to a couple of paragraphs in the pages of history, and there is a strong need to include this incident as a chapter from Class 8 to Class 12, so that our future generation can actually know the struggle and hardship our forefathers had to undergo to gain independence from the British." "There should be detailed information on the unsung revolutionaries who had attained martyrdom from 1857 to 1947, and questions should be asked of the students in various examinations. This will act as an incentive to the students and they will make efforts to learn about them," he said. Khan further said efforts should also be made at the university level to teach this incident as a specialised topic such as the Mughals. If this incident is taught only for the sake of teaching, then this will not serve any purpose, he added. "The real purpose will be served when questions in various examinations are asked on this important topic. Gradually, this will infuse a fresh dose of nationalism among the youth. I had studied Ramprasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan till Class 10. Whether they are now in the syllabus or not, I don't know. Once our children know that under what circumstances our country got independence, they will automatically become nationalistic," he said. Khan also said that there is a need to remember our revolutionaries beyond their birth anniversaries, death anniversaries and a few other special dates associated with them. Rajeev Singh, the grandson of Thakur Roshan Singh, told PTI, "More research should be done on the Kakori Train Action at the university level. I have only heard about my grandfather, Thakur Roshan Singh; I never had the honour of seeing him alive. My grandfather has not got the due share of prominence he deserved for the work done by him for the country and the contributions made by him." Singh said his only wish is to see that the work done by his grandfather should be duly acknowledged, as he made the supreme sacrifice of giving up his life for the country. "Children should be motivated to study more about him and other revolutionaries, whose contribution was no less than others," he said. Meeta Bakshi, granddaughter of Sachindra Nath Bakshi, told PTI, "At a time when people generally tend to forget the revolutionaries, remembering them is itself a big thing. I feel that the ambit of Kakori Train Action, which is being taught in the schools, should be significantly increased, so that children may know more about the rich history of this place and its impact on the Freedom Struggle." She said the Kakori anniversary is being celebrated from August 6 to August 8 at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow. A quiz contest was also organised. Children made posters. "They took an initiative of organising extra-curricular activities on Kakori," Bakshi said, adding that the Kakori incident should be integrated with various educational activities and programmes. Rohit Khatri, grandson of Udai Khatri, told PTI, "I am of the view that the Kakori Train Action should be fully included in the NCERT textbooks covering all the aspects of the incident. If detailed information is not available, then how will anyone come to know about the rich history of the Kakori Train Action?" Khatri said Kakori Shaheed Mandir should be made and developed as a tourist place containing all the information about the revolutionaries. A trained and well-informed guide should also be present there, who can give accurate information on various aspects of the incident to the visitors, he added. WB Police: No objection to peaceful RG Kar protests, warns against unrest

Kolkata, Aug 8 (PTI) Senior officers of West Bengal Police on Friday said they have no objection to peaceful rallies marking the first death anniversary of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder victim, but warned of strict legal actions against any attempt to break law and order. Addressing a press conference at West Bengal Police headquarters in Bhawani Bhavan, ADG (Law and Order) Javed Shamim said, 'We are yet to receive any application from any organisation planning to take out a rally on Saturday's to mark the first death anniversary of the RG Kar hospital doctor." He clarified that no protest will be allowed near the state secretariat, Nabanna, where Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) is in force, prohibiting gatherings. Shamim was accompanied by three senior police officers — ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, and Howrah City Police Commissioner Praveen Tripathy. 'Peaceful demonstrations will be allowed without restrictions, and the administration will fully cooperate with the demonstrators. However, no public property should be damaged, and if that happens, police will be compelled to take legal action," Verma said. Meanwhile, police have already taken strict measures in the wake of Saturday's proposed march to the state secretariat. According to a senior officer, there will be heavy police deployment on all roads leading to 'Nabanna'. 'Besides, there will be barricades at crucial points in Kidderpore, Princep Ghat and on all approach roads to the second Hooghly Bridge. Similar arrangements have been made on the Howrah side near Betaitala and Mandirtala," he said. Santragachi Bus Stand on the Howrah side and RR Avenue in the city have been selected as alternative sites for rallies according to a Calcutta High Court directive, he said. Notably, in protest against the RG Kar Medical College incident, the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front has called for a 'night vigil' protest across the city on Friday. A gathering is planned at Shyambazar five-point crossing, where the victim's parents have confirmed they would also be present. The parents of the deceased doctor have also called for a march to Nabanna on Saturday, inviting all political leaders and workers, except from the Trinamool Congress, to join. However, they have requested that no flags of any political party be used in the rally. Incidentally, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Calcutta High Court by a Howrah resident, expressing concerns that the proposed Nabanna march would disrupt normal life. Kejriwal, Mann launch sectoral committees to reshape Punjab's industrial policy

Arvind Kejriwal (left), Bhagwant Mann (PTI) NEW DELHI: AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday launched 24 sectoral committees aimed at transforming Punjab's industrial governance model. The committees will be responsible for drafting policies for each sector, shifting decision-making power from the bureaucracy to business owners, both large and small. 'Policies will now be made by small and large business owners themselves; the government will implement them,' Kejriwal said at the launch event in Chandigarh. 'True politics of AAP is handing power back to the people — it's about participation, not control.' Each committee will include MSME representatives, larger businesses, and officials from the Punjab Bureau of Industrial Investment and District Industry Centres. According to CM Bhagwant Mann, the idea was proposed during government-industry consultations held in September 2023. No approvals needed for MSMEs up to Rs 125 Cr: Kejriwal Kejriwal highlighted new measures to ease regulatory hurdles for industries in the state. 'Now, deemed approvals are being granted in 45 days in Punjab, and investments up to Rs 125 crore by MSMEs need no approval at all,' he said. He claimed that this model represented a break from previous regimes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Paul Gascoigne's Actual House Left Us With No Words - Take A Look Ohi Blog Undo 'Earlier, the system in Punjab punished entrepreneurs for their growth — they were threatened and extorted,' he added. From 'exploitative' past to participatory governance Describing the transition in phases, Kejriwal said, 'Before 2022 – A corrupt, exploitative system inherited by AAP. 2022–2025 – The reform phase under an honest government. Now – A revolutionary model of governance led by industry.' 'We don't know how to run a textile unit or manufacture sports equipment. Nor do the officers. But still, politicians take all decisions, and people run around us,' he said. 'That system is now gone.' Kejriwal urged industry stakeholders not to focus on subsidies. 'Subsidies aren't sustainable. If profit depends on them, the day subsidies stop, so does profit,' he said, calling for innovation and ease of doing business instead. Industrial bodies asked to submit draft policies by October 2 The sectoral committees are expected to study national and international policies and submit their sector-specific drafts by October 2. 'Make Punjab the most attractive state for investment in each sector. This is a new governance model — the government is stepping back to let people lead,' Kejriwal said. Mann echoed the sentiment, stating that the AAP government was committed to reversing Punjab's economic decline. 'Previous governments looted Punjab, but the AAP government will realize the dream of making Punjab vibrant again,' he said. Kejriwal, responding to criticism around delayed approvals, added: 'Some say if you delay approvals, people will come back with bribes, and that's how party funds are raised. But we don't want that. Our only goal is Punjab's development.'
