WEG lands supply contract for $3bln Adnoc infrastructure project

Zawya02-04-2025
UAE - WEG, a leading electric motor, variable frequency drives and gearbox manufacturer, has announced that it will support the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) set up a 300-km crude oil pipeline project along with pumping and booster stations in the UAE capital to maintain flow efficiency.
The project, being set up at an investment of $3 billion, will carry around 1.5 million barrels of crude oil per day.
WEG's scope of work involves supply of integrated drive package, including flameproof electric motors, variable speed drives (VSDs) and transformers, to help maximise the efficiency, reliability and safety of the horizontal centrifugal pumps underpinning the infrastructure.
The company aims to deliver the drive packages by September.
According to the Brazilian group, 20 medium-voltage flameproof motors will be core to this project. These motors include nine W22Xdb 3.3kV, 50Hz units in frame sizes 500-560, with power rating between 850kW and 990kW, and eleven 900-frame 6.6 kV M-Line motors with power rating between 6,710kW and 6,980kW.
Designed for the Arabian desert's harsh environmental conditions, these motors can withstand extreme heat of up to 55°C and are IP55-certified against dust and waterm, it stated.
WEG said its solutions will help drive multiple horizontal centrifugal pumps designed for heavy-duty industrial applications.
The W22Xdb flameproof motors maximise safety and efficiency in hazardous environments, meeting global standards such as Atex and IECEx. These motors feature robust construction with cast iron or welded steel frames and advanced cooling options combined with thermal and vibration monitoring for optimal reliability.
Other core benefits include high energy efficiency and customisable configurations, with multiple mounting options and terminal box designs, ideal for applications demanding flexible installation like oil pipelines, it stated.
"This $3 billion infrastructure will boost the UAE's energy export and security, transporting crude oil from Jebel Dhanna in Abu Dhabi to the Fujairah oil terminal on the eastern coast," said a company spokesman.
The WEG M-Line (Master Line) comprises highly versatile and customisable three-phase induction motors designed for the most demanding industrial applications.
The motor's optimal design and high-quality materials minimise losses while maximising efficiency. In addition, the motor's structural rigidity provides low vibration levels, enhancing durability and reliability in demanding applications, it stated.
Kiran Kumar, the HVS Development Sales Manager for HVS Motors & Drives, said: "The fact the OEM supplying the centrifugal pumps for this critical pipeline project turned to us is a testament to WEG's reputation for highly reliable customised drive solutions designed to minimise downtime and costs."
"Our integrated solution team worked closely with all stakeholders to meet the stringent requirements of this demanding application, including flame and arc resistance. Our ability to design an integrated drive package promptly was instrumental in enabling us to secure this important $22 million project," he added.-TradeArabia News Service

Spotlight on automotive marketing: Tools of trust and transparency

Chinese automotive brands are having a moment in the UAE. Once seen as budget alternatives, today they're redefining the value proposition with smarter tech, sleek designs, and region-ready engineering. But with growth comes responsibility, especially when it comes to marketing credibility in a market dominated by convenience-first behaviour. We sat down with Syed Fahad, Marketing Manager at MAHY Khoory Automotive, the authorised distributor of Dongfeng vehicles in the UAE and dealer for Omoda Jaecoo brands in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, to talk about the surge in Chinese car brands, consumer awareness, and how marketing can make or break trust in this evolving space. There's been a noticeable rise in Chinese car brands across the region. What's driving this momentum? Syed Fahad: The shift has been brewing for a few years, but it's accelerated now. Chinese automotive brands have really stepped up in quality, design, and tech. They're offering features you'd expect from premium models, ADAS, infotainment, hybrid drivetrains, but at a far more competitive price point. Consumers in the UAE are value-driven, and these brands deliver that value in a big way. Despite that, there's still some hesitation among buyers. What's the perception challenge? Fahad: The legacy perception that Chinese cars are cheap or unreliable is fading, but not gone. A big part of that is education. Many consumers don't realise that brands such as Dongfeng are not just massive in China, they're global. They manufacture for Nissan, Honda, and Peugeot under joint ventures. The tech is world-class. But unless that story is told right, the assumptions persist. What's the role of marketing in shifting that perception? Fahad: It's everything. We're not just marketing cars, we're marketing trust. Especially when you're introducing a brand that's still 'new' in the minds of consumers. Our job is to de-risk the decision. That means leading with transparency: talking about GCC compliance, explaining the warranty, showcasing the after-sales infrastructure. If you focus only on price, you reinforce the wrong narrative. What risks do buyers face when they don't go through authorised distributors? Fahad: Quite a few. We see a lot of grey-market imports entering the UAE, vehicles that aren't GCC-certified, or built for colder climates. The A/C systems underperform, the warranties don't apply, and in some cases, insurance becomes void. These are real risks. We've had customers come to us after a bad experience, looking for a fix. It's costly. That's why our messaging always focuses on authorised = protected. How are you positioning Dongfeng in this competitive space? Fahad: We're building it on three pillars: credibility, compliance, and convenience. We offer fully GCC-compliant vehicles, genuine spare parts, and nationwide after-sales service. But more importantly, we market that clearly. We're not trying to be the loudest, we're trying to be the clearest. In today's landscape, clarity converts. What's your outlook on Chinese automotive brands in the UAE over the next 2-3 years? Fahad: Growth will continue, no question. I think Chinese brands will dominate the value segment and start creeping into the mid-premium space too. But the winners will be those who back it with structure, authorised networks, certified servicing, and strong consumer education. The marketing will need to evolve from 'Look at our features' to 'Here's why you can trust us.' Final Word? Fahad: Chinese brands are no longer the underdog, they're a force. But in the UAE, where consumers are connected and informed, brands need to play the long game. And that starts with marketing that doesn't just sell, it reassures, educates, and earns trust.

Adnoc Gas posts record Q2 profit despite low oil prices

Abu Dhabi's Adnoc Gas has reported a 16 per cent annual jump in its second-quarter profit, despite a lower oil price environment, capitalising on operational and cost efficiencies. Net profit in the three months ended June rose to a record $1.39 billion, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company unit said on Wednesday in a filing to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, where its shares trade. Revenue for the period was down more than 4 per cent year-on-year to $4.66 billion, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation – a key metric for profitability – climbed 8 per cent to $2.26 billion. For the first half of 2025, net profit increased by 11.3 per cent annually to $2.65 billion, while revenue inched down less than 1 per cent to $9.33 billion. The Adnoc Gas board of directors approved an interim dividend of $1.792 billion, a 5 per cent year-on-year increase, which will be distributed in September, it said. The company's highest-ever quarterly profit was 'fuelled by our strong local market business and improved operational efficiency … we remain well-positioned for long-term growth', said Fatema Al Nuaimi, chief executive of Adnoc Gas. Adnoc Gas supplies approximately 60 per cent of the UAE's gas sales needs and supplies end-customers in more than 20 countries.
