Heartbreak and troubles abound in this weeks literary fiction: The Scrapbook by Heather Clark, Ordinary Love by Marie Rutkoski, The Mobius Book by Catherine Lacey

Daily Mail20-06-2025
The Scrapbook by Heather Clark (Jonathan Cape £18.99, 256pp)
The discovery of a scrapbook belonging to the author's grandfather, who helped liberate Dachau during the Second World War, inspired this not quite historical novel which examines the moral implications of the past for those living in the present.
Anna, a Harvard student, has fallen hard for Christophe, who is studying architecture in Hamburg, and spends every holiday with him there, discussing literature, her grandfather's experience in the war and the still visible legacies of both Nazism and the Allied bombing campaign.
Yet Christophe won't commit fully to the relationship. What's more, he is vague about the wartime role of his own grandfather, whom he insists joined the German resistance.
The novel's architecture feels excessively engineered at times but Anna and Christophe's restlessly intelligent conversations raise juicy questions about the extent to which individuals are complicit with a nation's history.
Ordinary Love by Marie Rutkoski (Virago £16.99, 368pp)
This sexy, summer romance slips down as easily as oysters and champagne. Emily has walked out of her ten-year marriage to wealthy, proprietorial Jack when she bumps into Gen, her first love and a woman whom she has never got over – not that Emily dared admit this to herself before.
While Emily and Gen, who is now a world-class athlete, embark on a tentative reunion, Jack is refusing to acknowledge the marriage has ended, while also fighting Emily for custody of their two children.
Yet Emily and Gen soon find themselves in choppy waters, scrutinised at every turn by the Press, and neither of them the giddy teenagers they were when they first met.
Rutkoski neatly tucks familiar ideas about ambition, self-hood and desire inside disarmingly glistening prose to produce a sweetly giddy novel which even the inevitable ending can't throw off track.
The Mobius Book by Catherine Lacey (Granta £16.99, 240pp)
You can start Catherine Lacey's fictionalised memoir – or should that be autobiographical novel? – at the end if you like: it makes no difference.
A book in two parts, one printed upside down, to mimic the structure of the Mobius strip from which it takes its name, this offers two versions – one presented as memoir, the other as fiction – of the same story, namely Lacey's real-life break up with the American writer Jesse Ball.
Both narratives explore the passivity of grief and the parallels between heartbreak and the loss of religious faith, but there's not enough synergy between the two to justify the concept.
Lacey is a bracing experimentalist but you can't help suspect she's tried to give literary sophistication to what would otherwise feel like a rather ugly attack on her ex.

Mark Goldbridge's YouTube channel win rights to show top-flight matches this season in landmark shared deal with Gary Neville's The Overlap

Manchester United YouTuber Mark Goldbridge has landed rights to broadcast top flight matches during the 2025-26 season. Goldbridge, whose real name is Brent Di Cesare, has risen to fame on social media through his coverage of United in recent years. The content creator has built a large following by delivering a series of viral moments during his United watch-along sessions for each match on 'The United Stand'. Another YouTube channel 'That's Football' features watch-alongs involving other clubs, as well as reacting to major stories from across the sport. Goldbridge's offering is set to increase further having been awarded rights to broadcast a selection of Bundesliga matches this season. His channel and The Overlap, which features Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher, have both been included as Bundesliga broadcast partners. The two channels will share live matches throughout the season, which will be shown in watch-along formats. 'That's Football will stream 20 live Bundesliga matches on Friday nights as well as creating 34 weekly shows in 25/26 – the first creator channel with official league rights,' a statement from 'That's Football' read. 'A landmark deal putting That's Football alongside Sky, BBC and Amazon in the Bundesliga UK strategy.' Their involvement is in addition to the BBC having free to air rights to Friday night matches for the next two seasons, which will also be shown on the Bundesliga's own YouTube channel. Sky Sports will reportedly continue to show the Bundesliga's Saturday evening fixture and matches between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, while Amazon will have rights to all their Sunday matches. Goldbridge's involvement, however, marks the first time a content creator has been awarded broadcast rights to a top European league. His staggering earnings were revealed last year, with accounts on Companies House revealing that his five companies had £4,039,957 in the bank between them as of the end of 2023. This represented a £1.2million increase on the same figure a year earlier. The companies are not big enough to require full, audited accounts to be published, but he enjoyed a successful year while United struggled on the pitch. His 'The United Stand' channel boasts 2.15million subscribers on YouTube and claims to be the biggest Man United fan media outlet in the world, while 'That's Football' has 1.38m subscribers. Goldbridge had previously been accused by former Man United defender Paul Parker of 'causing problems' at the club, who also claimed the content creator is a Nottingham Forest fan. 'I don't like what Mark Goldbridge is doing,' Parker claimed in 2023. 'It's a problem. Everyone has to make a living but you have to be very, very thick skinned to make money off the back of something you don't like. 'He has no relationship to Man United, he is a Nottingham Forest fan. It's an incredible skill to do that, actually… to make money on the back of something you don't like. 'He is attacking the club, the manager and the owners of a football club that you don't even love. He has no inner feeling with the club and it's a scary but incredible feeling to have to be that invested in a club that you don't support.' Alejandro Garnacho also landed himself in hot water after liking one of Goldbridge's X posts in April when the YouTuber accused Erik ten Hag of 'throwing a 19-year-old under the bus' for taking him off at half time against Bournemouth. Garnacho was reprimanded for his behaviour, but Ten Hag was happy to 'move on' from the incident after the forward apologised. Meanwhile, Rasmus Hojlund's decision to do an interview with The United Stand back in February sparked a backlash, with Mail Sport exclusively revealing that Goldbridge was sent death threats in the aftermath. It was reported that some of United's players were furious with Hojlund for granting an interview to the controversial fan channel, but the Danish striker dismissed this as 'fake news'. Pamela Anderson, 58, admits 'you can't help fall in love' with Liam Neeson, 73, as she opens up about their 'chemistry' after it was revealed they've been dating 'for a while'

has opened up about her 'chemistry' with Liam Neeson. The Playboy veteran, 58, and Taken star, 73, had stirred up rumours of a romance after sharing an unexpected amount of PDA on red carpets to promote their new movie The Naked Gun, which hit theatres on Friday, August 1. Last month, a source confirmed to the Daily Mail that they have been dating 'for a while'. And in a new interview, Pamela has admitted that 'you can't help falling in love' with her co-star. Discussing their new movie, the beauty revealed she was 'nervous' to start working with Liam, but he turned out to be a 'gentleman'. Pamela told OK! magazine: 'He's such a gentleman, such a sweetheart, so giving and generous, and so complimentary and supportive that, you know, you can't help but fall in love with him.' She continued: 'We do have chemistry and, you know, off-set, he's silly. He has that little boy sense of humour. Yeah, he's funny. 'On set, I don't think we broke too much, but in rehearsals, we'd be playing around and having a bit of a laugh.' It comes after it was revealed that the two had been dating 'for a while'.. The May/December lovebirds have been kissing on the red carpet while promoting the high-profile comedy in New York City and London. 'Pam is very drawn to Liam because he is totally open to her way of thinking and living, and especially her approach to fame, which is impressive,' a source told Daily Mail. 'She has been telling friends he is smitten and does a lot of sweet things for her, like sending her flowers, and spending time with her sons and dogs.' The insider has noted they've managed to keep the long-distance romance private by spending time at her house in Canada. 'Pam cooks and gardens at home... it's wholesome and appealing and very un-Hollywood and Liam loves that,' said the insider. 'He actually gets involved.' Daily Mail has reached out to Pamela's and Liam's representatives for comment. Eyebrows were raised in October 2024 when Liam said he loved the former Playboy model. He told People: 'With Pamela, first off, I'm madly in love with her. She's just terrific to work with. I can't compliment her enough, I'll be honest with you. No huge ego. She just comes in to do the work. She's funny and so easy to work with.' Pamela said that Liam is 'the perfect gentleman' and he 'brings out the best in you … with respect, kindness and depth of experience. It was an absolute honor to work with him.' And she told EW: 'We definitely have a connection that is very sincere, very loving. He's a good guy.' This comes after Liam has joked that his favourite part of The Naked Gun was filming 'the sex scenes' with Pamela. The actor stars as Frank Drebin Jr. opposite Pamela as nightclub singer Beth in the comedy reboot, and Liam teased he particularly enjoyed shooting their love scenes, which were made with the help of an intimacy coordinator. The Sun newspaper reported Liam joked the best bit of the shoot was 'the sex scenes', and he added of the intimacy coordinator: 'I'd never had one before. But she was in the background. There was no kind of: "Ok! Excuse me!"' The publication went on to report that Liam claimed the intimacy coordinator threw her hands in the air and exclaimed: 'I can't take this! This is too hot for me. I'm going for coffee.' In The Naked Gun - which is a new take on the original Leslie Nielsen 1988 comedy movie - Detective Frank Drebin Jr. (Neeson) takes on his first big case, determined to solve a high-profile murder and save the police department from closure. Following in his father's hilariously clumsy footsteps, he stumbles through outrageous situations while trying to solve the mystery. Liam said he didn't want to 'emulate' Nielsen in the new film, which was directed by Akiva Schaffer and hits screens on August 1. He told Empire magazine: 'I wouldn't say nerve-wracking, but every day I would go up to Akiva after we wrapped and say, 'How was it?' Because I just didn't know. 'I did not want to emulate the wonderful Leslie Nielsen, but the only thing I grabbed from him, was, 'Be serious. Don't try to be funny. Just stick to being a serious cop who is a bit of a doofus.' The Taken actor also admitted he wasn't sure if he was funny enough for The Naked Gun - which also stars Paul Walter Hauser and Danny Huston. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he said: 'During the whole shoot - I'm being very honest - I still did not know, when we wrapped at the end of each working day, whether it was working for me. 'Pamela, Paul, Danny, everybody else, I thought, were very funny. I just couldn't put a verdict on myself, on my own performance.
