Italian regulator hits Shein with 1-million euro greenwashing fine

[ROME] Italy's competition authority (AGCM) imposed a one million euro (S$1.5 million) fine on China-founded fast fashion online retailer Shein on Monday (Aug 4) for misleading customers on the environmental impact of its products.
This is Shein's second financial sanction by a European competition authority in little more than a month, after France fined the company 40 million euros on Jul 3 over fake discounts and misleading environmental claims.
The Italian fine was imposed on Infinite Styles Services Limited, a Dublin-based company that operates Shein's website in Europe, following a 'greenwashing' investigation by AGCM launched last September.
Shein did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
AGCM said the environmental sustainability and social responsibility messages on Shein's website 'were sometimes vague, generic, and/or overly emphatic, and in other cases omitted and misleading.'
Shein's claims on circular system design and product recyclability 'were found to be false or at the very least confusing', and the green credentials of its 'evoluSHEIN by design' collection were overstated, the regulator said.

Shein promotes the 'evoluSHEIN by design' collection as clothes made using more sustainable and responsible manufacturing.
AGCM said consumers could be misled to think that the collection was made with eco-friendly materials and fully recyclable, 'a fact that, considering the fibres used and currently existing recycling systems, is untrue'.
The authority also took issue with Shein's 'vague and generic' commitments to cut greenhouse emissions by 25 per cent by 2030 and to net zero by 2050, noting they contradicted its increase in emissions in 2023 and 2024.
The Italian regulator said its overall assessment was influenced by an 'increased duty of care' falling on Shein, 'because it operates in a highly polluting sector and with highly polluting methods' such as fast and super-fast fashion.
AGCM is in charge of consumer protection as well as competition.
When AGCM's investigation was launched last year, Shein said it was 'ready to cooperate openly with relevant Italian authorities, providing the necessary support and information to address any inquiries'.
Founded in China, Shein is known for its cheap tops and dresses. Its treatment of workers and environmental record came under increased scrutiny last year after reports that it was planning to list its shares in London. REUTERS

[SINGAPORE] Saudi Arabia raised crude prices for a second consecutive month, signalling confidence in demand for its barrels as Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (Opec+) continues to ramp up supply. State producer Saudi Aramco will raise the premium for Arab Light crude to Asia by US$1 a barrel for shipments in September, to US$3.20 a barrel, according to a price list seen by Bloomberg, the highest since April. The company was expected to increase the price of the grade by 90 US cents a barrel, according to a survey of refiners and traders. The world's biggest exporter has been leading the Opec+ in raising output as they seek bigger market share. So far, burgeoning demand for transport fuels has bolstered refining margins and helped the market to absorb the added barrels. Aramco chief executive officer Amin Nasser said this week that he's bullish that it will continue. 'The strength in oil market fundamentals is supporting demand for our crude and products,' Nasser told reporters on an earnings call. 'We expect the second half to be more than two million barrels per day higher than the first half.' In contrast to the hikes to Asian buyers, the kingdom cut prices for its European customers by the most in a year. All values to Europe were cut by US$1.30. Prices for shipments to the US nudged slightly higher. Many analysts and traders expect that the bulk of added output from Opec+, which is set to come this month and next, could weigh on prices later this year. Wall Street firms such as JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs anticipate that prices will sink towards US$60 a barrel in the fourth quarter. On Sunday, Opec+, which includes partners such as Russia, agreed to raise production by 547,000 barrels a day in September. The planned increase, following a similar-sized boost for August, came as traders are waiting to see how US President Donald Trump's threats to punish Russia over the war in Ukraine could affect the market. SINGAPORE - Singapore-based Carro, South-east Asia's largest used-car online marketplace, is preparing for a US initial public offering (IPO) as early as 2026 that could raise up to US$500 million (S$642.6 million), according to sources familiar with the matter. The company is aiming for a valuation of more than US$3 billion (S$3.8 billion), according to the sources, who could not be named discussing confidential information. If successful, Carro's listing would be the largest South-east Asian IPO in the United States since Shopee parent Sea's 989.3 million listing in 2017 and the third biggest South-east Asian high-tech IPO in the US, according to LSEG. It would also be the first major automotive tech and artificial intelligence or AI-driven commerce start-up from Singapore to go public in the US. Carro is on track to deliver US$100 million in annual earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation by its fiscal year ending March 2026, one of the sources said. [WASHINGTON] A blockbuster study published in top science journal Nature last year warned that unchecked climate change could slash global GDP by a staggering 62 per cent by century's end, setting off alarm bells among financial institutions worldwide. But a re-analysis by Stanford University researchers in California, released on Wednesday, challenges that conclusion - finding the projected hit to be about three times smaller and broadly in line with earlier estimates, after excluding an anomalous result tied to Uzbekistan. The saga may culminate in a rare retraction, with Nature telling AFP it will have 'further information to share soon' - a move that would almost certainly be seized upon by climate-change skeptics. Both the original authors - who have acknowledged errors - and the Stanford team hoped the transparency of the review process would bolster, rather than undermine public confidence in science. Climate scientist Maximilian Kotz and co-authors at the renowned Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), published the original research in April 2024, using datasets from 83 countries to assess how changes in temperature and precipitation affect economic growth. Sign Up Sign Up It became the second most cited climate paper of the year, according to the UK-based Carbon Brief outlet, and informed policy at the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, US federal government and others. AFP was among numerous media outlets to report on it. Yet the eye-popping claim that global GDP would be lowered by 62 per cent by the year 2100 under a high emissions scenario soon drew scrutiny. 'That's why our eyebrows went up because most people think that 20 per cent is a very big number,' scientist and economist Solomon Hsiang, one of the researchers behind the re-analysis, also published in Nature, told AFP. When they tried to replicate the results, Hsiang and his Stanford colleagues spotted serious anomalies in the data surrounding Uzbekistan. Specifically, there was a glaring mismatch in the provincial growth figures cited in the Potsdam paper and the national numbers reported for the same periods by the World Bank. 'When we dropped Uzbekistan, suddenly everything changed. And we were like, 'whoa, that's not supposed to happen,'' Hsiang said. 'We felt like we had to document it in this form because it's been used so widely in policy making.' The authors of the 2024 paper acknowledged methodological flaws, including currency exchange issues, and on Wednesday uploaded a corrected version, which has not yet been peer-reviewed. 'We're waiting for Nature to announce their further decision on what will happen next,' Kotz told AFP. He stressed that while 'there can be methodological issues and debate within the scientific community,' the bigger picture was unchanged: climate change will have substantial economic impacts in the decades ahead. Undeniable climate impact Frances Moore, an associate professor in environmental economics at the University of California, Davis, who was not involved in either the original paper or the re-analysis, agreed. She told AFP the correction did not alter overall policy implications. Projections of an economic slowdown by the year 2100 are 'extremely bad' regardless of the Kotz-led study, she said, and 'greatly exceed the costs of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to stabilize the climate, many times over.' 'Future work to identify specific mechanisms by which variation in climate affects economic output over the medium and long-term is critical to both better understand these findings and prepare society to respond to coming climate disruption,' she also noted. Asked whether Nature would be retracting the Potsdam paper, Karl Ziemelis, the journal's physical sciences editor, did not answer directly but said an editor's note was added to the paper in November 2024 'as soon as we became aware of an issue' with the data and methodology. 'We are in the final stages of this process and will have further information to share soon,' he told AFP. The episode comes at a delicate time for climate science, under heavy fire from the US government under President Donald Trump's second term, as misinformation about the impacts of human-driven greenhouse gases abounds. Yet even in this environment, Hsiang argued, the episode showed the robust nature of the scientific method. 'One team of scientists checking other scientists' work and finding mistakes, the other team acknowledging it, correcting the record, this is the best version of science.' AFP
