ISLAMABAD: PM Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said India would not be allowed to snatch "even one drop" of water belonging to Pakistan, amid tensions between the two neighbours.
A day after the Pahalgam attack on April 22, India put the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in "abeyance". Pakistan has repeatedly warned that any interference to stop the water would be treated as an act of war.
"I want to tell the enemy today that if you threaten to hold our water, then keep this in mind that you cannot snatch even one drop of Pakistan," PM Sharif said while addressing an event Tuesday. PTI

Rahul Gandhi's lawyer raised 'threat to his life' issue without his consent: Congress

The Congress on Wednesday said Rahul Gandhi's lawyer raised the issue of threat to his life without his consent and will take back the statement in court on Thursday. Rahul Gandhi's lawyer said that he will "file a formal application tomorrow for withdrawal of the said Pursis" before the Pune court. (PTI File) An application, filed before Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amol Shinde in Pune by Gandhi's lawyer Milind Pawar, said that Gandhi could face harm from the followers of the ideology of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Nathuram Godse, and providing "preventive protection" is the state's constitutional obligation. Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said Gandhi's lawyer raised the issue of threat to his life in the court without his consent. "Mr Gandhi has strong objection to this and tomorrow his lawyer will take back this statement in court," Khera said in a post on X. He also shared a press release by the lawyer which said "the Pursis dated 13.08.2025 was filed by me in the Court without Instructions from the client". "The contents of the Pursis were drafted by me without consulting my client Shri. Rahul Gandhi. My client has taken strong exception to filing of this Pursis dated 13.08.2025 and has expressed his disagreement with the contents of the Pursis," Pawar said. "I shall file a formal application tomorrow for withdrawal of the said Pursis before the Hon'ble Court," he said. The case, the trial of which is yet to start, pertains to certain comments allegedly made by Gandhi against V D Savarkar, freedom fighter and Hindutva ideologue. The application said that complainant Satyaki Savarkar had admitted that he is also a direct descendant, through maternal lineage, of Nathuram Godse and Gopal Godse, principal accused in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and recently held a press conference in New Delhi, placing before the nation evidence of "electoral fraud" by the Election Commission, the application said. Gandhi also staged a protest in the Parliament complex, raising slogans such as "vote chor sarkar". "In light of the documented history of violent and anti-constitutional tendencies linked to the complainant's lineage, and considering the prevailing political climate, there exists a clear, reasonable, and substantial apprehension that Rahul Gandhi may face harm, wrongful implication, or other forms of targeting by persons subscribing to the ideology of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar," the application stated. "In such circumstances, preventive protection is not only prudent but is a constitutional obligation upon the state," it added. Advocate Pawar had said earlier this 'Pursis' or application was submitted as a precautionary measure with the objective of "legally safeguarding the fairness, integrity, and transparency of the present proceedings".

Punjab CM flags off 500 women panchayat leaders for Maharashtra convention

Chandigarh, Aug 13 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday flagged off a train carrying a 500-member delegation of women sarpanches and panchs to Maharashtra for the national convention of women panchayats. Mann termed it a red-letter day, saying the delegation comprises representatives from high-performing panchayats and aims to enable them to gain new experiences through interactions with peers from other states. He said the visit will help the elected representatives ensure holistic development of their villages. Panchayats are pillars of democracy, directly managing schools, dispensaries, veterinary hospitals and other public welfare institutions in rural areas, the chief minister noted. Mann expressed hope the visit would boost the confidence of women representatives and help them gain new insights for development of villages. The government will also facilitate the delegation's visit to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded, he said, adding the initiative commemorates the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. The state will bear all boarding and lodging expenses, he added. Earlier, Mann paid obeisance at Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib and vowed to follow the footsteps of Sikh Gurus and martyrs for the welfare of all sections of society. He recalled that the shrine is associated with the martyrdom of the 'chotte sahibzadas' — Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh — who were bricked alive along with their grandmother Mata Gujri by the Mughal governor of Sirhind. Their martyrdom had inspired Punjabis to fight against injustice, tyranny and oppression, since ages and the younger generations need to be made aware of this supreme sacrifice, so that they can also make selfless sacrifices for the country, Mann said. Animal lovers demand withdrawal of SC order on relocating stray dogs

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) Animal lovers on Wednesday demanded the withdrawal of a Supreme Court order on shifting all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelter homes in view of rising dog bites and rabies cases. Holding placards reading 'Independence Day, for Whom?", the demonstrators included activists, volunteers, NCP (SP) spokesperson Anish Gawande, activist Rai Manvi, and Ambika Shukla, founder of People for Animals and sister of former Union minister and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi. Stating that there are divisions everywhere over religion, language, and now even between 'animal lovers and animal haters", Shukla urged people to understand 'how cruel" the top court order is. Another protester, Vidhya Pandey, said her family had been feeding stray dogs for over a decade. 'We were scratched once while playing with them and took rabies injections, but never faced any health issues. There are no shelter homes in Delhi. Where will they take these dogs," she asked. The protesters raised slogans such as 'Save our dogs" and 'Delhi government, roll back the order", and sang the song 'Hum Honge Kamyaab", displaying posters of dogs alongside images of Lord Shiva. On Monday, the Supreme Court directed the Delhi government and the civic bodies in Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad to remove all stray dogs from the streets and place them in shelters. The bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan observed that there was an 'extremely grim" situation caused by dog bites leading to rabies, especially among children.
