Former A-League attacker Milanovic tastes defeat with Aberdeen
Milanovic, who won last season's Johnny Warren Medal following a memorable campaign with the Western Sydney Wanderers, started at Tynecastle on Tuesday morning (AEST) in a Dons side that also included Socceroos striker Kusini Yengi, who also joined the club in the off-season after a two-year sting with English outfit Portsmouth.
However, neither of the attacking weapons were able to have an influence on the contest.
Yengi was replaced in the 63rd minute by Fletcher Boyd, while Milanovic's shift ended in the 81st minute when he made way for Ester Sokler.
''Mila' did some good things, and Yengi arrived at the chances, but we need to keep arriving at the chances and try to get those scoring chances,' Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin said after us side's loss to a Hearts outfit that included Australian midfielder Cameron Devlin.
'We have some good chances there but they were better … and that's why they won the game.
'We have to take it game by game, keep growing and try to be better all the time so we can get the results. We need to take a step as a team and grow in the future.'
The Dons face an even tougher task this Sunday night when they host champions Celtic at Pittodrie.
'We will be ready for that game but we need to improve some parts this week,' Thelin said.
Milanovic's former Wanderers teammate Zac Sapsford was part of a Dundee United team that drew 2-2 with Falkirk on Sunday night (AEST).
Meanwhile, Socceroos right-back Lewis Miller has left Scottish Premiership club Hibernian to join English Championship club Blackburn Rovers on a three-year deal.
'I'm buzzing and I've been able to soak in everything since I drove through the entrance and saw the building,' former Central Coast Mariners star Miller told his new club's website.
'It fills me with confidence that we can get to the play-offs and then hopefully get promoted (to the Premier League) because that's what we're all playing football for.'
Miller will join five other Socceroos – Brett Emerton, Lucas Neill, Vince Grella, Robbie Slater and John Filan – to have played for Blackburn, while former Melbourne Victory striker Rudy Gestede is the club's head of football operations.
'I've been speaking with Rudy, and he's emphasised that this is the right place to be,' Miller said.

Roos lose Larkey for season, confirm two AFL debutants
North Melbourne has put star forward Nick Larkey on ice for the rest of the season after he sustained another knee setback on Sunday against St Kilda. But as Larkey's season ended, the Kangaroos confirmed Geordie Payne and Cooper Trembath would make their AFL debuts against the Saints. The brilliant goalkicker has had several PCL troubles this year and was in a brace as his side trained on Friday. North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson said Larkey's latest setback had shifted his focus towards next season. 'That's why I was so disappointed post game with the attention he got in that marking contest,' he said. 'He'll miss the rest of the season unfortunately. PCLs are difficult injuries to manage but when you crunch your knee into the ground like he did in that marking contest, there was only going to be damage. 'We've just got to look after that now, put him in a brace which you would've seen him in today and get himself right for next year.' Clarkson defended Larkey post-game on Sunday, suggesting he was not protected enough in the marking contest. 'You get hit in the middle of the back like that, we're meant to be there to protect the ballplayer, aren't we? Struth,' Clarkson said. Nick Larkey leaves the ground in visible pain last week. Picture:But on Friday, a much more measured Clarkson retracted his comment, saying the emotion and care for his star forward got the better of him. 'I reflected afterwards, I was just so disappointed for him and disappointed for us knowing full well as soon as he hobbled I knew what had happened,' he said. 'I was sort of disappointed in myself a little bit … that I didn't let him know that leading at flat-out pace with defenders chasing was going to put him at the most risk. 'We deal with these sorts of things all the time in terms of players who have to combat injury or put themselves at risk or not in games. 'I don't think he necessarily had to run flat out, full on, someone else could've ran into that space. 'Afterwards, you just feel so much emotion that your captain of the day and one of your leading players … it just got the better of me in the post-match.' The Kangaroos will unveil Payne, the top selection in the 2024 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft who has kicked 10 goals in his past two games in the VFL, including six against Sandringham last weekend. Trembath, 19, was picked up from the club's VFL program with the 10th overall selection in this year's Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

Zinedine Machach released by Melbourne Victory on ‘compassionate grounds'
Melbourne Victory's 2025-26 A-League title hopes have suffered a blow following the shock exit of French star Zinedine Machach. The 29-year-old midfielder had a season remaining on his Victory contract, but has been released on 'compassionate grounds' by A-League heavyweights. It's understood Machach has accepted a more lucrative deal from a club in Morocco. 'I will look back on my time in Melbourne with fond memories,' Machach said. 'It has been a pleasure to represent the Victory and I would like to thank the club and its fans for making me and my family feel welcomed since I joined. 'I am sad to be leaving, but this decision is the right one for my family and I appreciate the support I have received from the club in making this decision.' Machach, who joined the Victory in August 2023 from Greek club Ionikos, scored 14 goals in 64 appearances in all competitions for the Melbourne club. He was part of two Victory grand-final losing teams, and also came up short in last year's Australia Cup decider. Victory director of football John Didulica said Machach had been a 'special player and person for us over the past two seasons'. 'He took to the A-League exceptionally well and played an important part in producing many memorable moments for Melbourne Victory," Didulica said. 'While we are terribly disappointed to lose someone that we are so close to, we know that Zinedine's most important roles in life are that of father and husband, so we support his decision entirely to move closer to family for personal reasons. 'As we say farewell to 'Zizou', we have no doubt that with the talent we currently have and the players we are looking to bring in, we can go one better this season.' Machach is the latest player to part ways with the Victory following the off-season departures of Daniel Arzani (Ferencvaros, Hungary), Ryan Teague (Mechelen, Belgium), Kasey Bos (Mainz 05, Germany), Mitch Langerak (retired), free agent Bruno Fornaroli and loan signing Alex Badolato (Newcastle Jets).
