Spurs' Maddison suffers 'bad' injury in friendly
Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank says the injury suffered by midfielder James Maddison during Sunday's pre-season draw against Newcastle "looks bad". The former Leicester City playmaker, 28, pulled up off the ball seven minutes from time during Spurs' 1-1 draw with the Magpies. The England international looked in clear discomfort and had to be stretchered off from the field of play, while team-mate Son Heung-min, during his final appearance for the club, was visibly emotional watching on. Frank says Maddison, who missed the Europa League final victory against Manchester United last season with a knee injury, has likely injured the same knee. "Sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal," said Frank. "That's what we got today. It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players. "We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before." Ademola Lookman says he has handed in Atalanta transfer request, alleges ‘broken promises, poor treatment'
Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman says he has handed in a formal transfer request and alleged he has been the subject of 'poor treatment' from the Serie A club. In a statement posted on social media on Sunday, Lookman claimed Atalanta's hierarchy have gone back on promises and are blocking a potential move away. Advertisement 'There have been numerous clubs approach Atalanta in the past and I have previously always stayed loyal,' Lookman said. 'However, myself and the ownership of the club have been in agreement that now is the right time and the club were clear with me that if a fair offer came in they would allow me to move. 'Despite now receiving an offer in alignment to what I believe had been discussed sadly the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand. 'As a result and after many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me as both a human being and as a professional footballer, sadly I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right and I feel that enough is enough. I can confirm I have now handed in a formal transfer request.' The Athletic has approached Atalanta for comment. Lookman, 27, joined Atalanta in the summer of 2022 from RB Leipzig. He scored 20 goals and provided seven assists last season, finishing as Serie A's third highest goalscorer. He has recorded 52 goals and 25 assists in 118 matches for the club, and scored a hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen — Atalanta's first major trophy in 60 years. Reports in Italy in recent weeks have linked Lookman with a move to Inter, who finished second in Serie A last term and will play Champions League football during the 2025-26 campaign. The Athletic reported in early July that the forward had also been discussed by Arsenal, but the club had been unwilling to match Atalanta's valuation, while he attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024. Lookman said he has 'always worn the shirt with pride' and tried to represent Atalanta 'with heart, passion and dedication'. 'Winning the Europa League and standing shoulder to shoulder with my teammates that night in Dublin celebrating with our fans was one of the proudest moments of my career,' he wrote, adding: 'That's what makes writing this so hard. I have loved every moment but feel that now, after three wonderful years in Bergamo, it is the right time to move on and experience a new adventure.' Advertisement In February, Atalanta's head coach Gian Piero Gasperini said Lookman was 'one of the worst penalty takers I have ever seen' after the Nigeria international missed a spot kick in the Italian side's 5-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League knockout play-off round. Lookman came on as a substitute with his side already 5-1 down on aggregate, scoring immediately after his introduction before missing the spot kick. The forward responded to being 'singled out' by saying Gasperini's remarks were 'deeply disrespectful'. Lookman came through the Charlton Athletic academy before joining Everton in 2017. He signed for Leipzig on loan before transferring to the German club permanently in 2019. After returning to England in loan spells with Fulham and Leicester, he joined Atalanta.

Kobbie Mainoo: Spurs get Man United's answer to transfer enquiry
Manchester United have already spent over £130m this summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to bolster their ailing attack, but are yet to raise a penny through player sales. Marcus Rashford departed on loan to Barcelona earlier this month and the removal of his wages from the books at Old Trafford is a boost, but permanent departures for decent fees are needed to raise funds to continue the summer overhaul. With the Red Devils eyeing big-money moves for the likes of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand, some current United stars will have to be sacrificed to secure cash to reinvest. Likely departures Ruben Amorim's squad is starting to take shape during the close season, specifically in terms of who has not made the trip across the pond to the USA. Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia have all been left out and are all known to be seeking a way out of Old Trafford. United chiefs are thought to be working hard to secure permanent transfers for these players, with Antony linked with a surprise move to Al-Nassr and Bayern Munich recently enquiring for Alejandro Garnacho. It would be a surprise to see any of these players working under Amorim next season, but at a time when cash is famously tight at United the list of potential departees is certainly not limited to just those four. Mainoo linked with exit Talented youngster Kobbie Mainoo was immense under Erik ten Hag but slipped down the pecking order under his Portuguese replacement, not helped by injury. The 20-year-old was suddenly no longer unsellable, and given his Carrington background and huge potential instead became a valuable asset which could be sold for the right price. Strong interest from Chelsea in January amounted to nothing and Mainoo looked set to stay put after all, but fans were given another scare last week with the news that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in the England international. United plan to keep their midfielder But according to GIVEMESPORT sources United 'are not looking to sell' the player who was the subject of 'informal enquiries' from Spurs. In fact, the report claims, Mainoo is doing everything he can to earn 'a prominent role' under Amorim rather than find a fresh challenge elsewhere, and wants to impress at United to put himself in the frame for next year's World Cup. Spurs are said to have looked to Mainoo as an alternative to Morgan Gibbs-White, but were rebuffed with United 'not seeking to do business even though it is not a given that he will be a regular starter under Amorim'. The youngster, who United have previously valued at £70m, did in fact start in United's recent pre-season clash with West Ham United and looked accomplished in a midfield pivot alongside Manuel Ugarte. And while competition for places is set to be fierce at Old Trafford next season with no European football reducing the number of games, Mainoo can still expect plenty of opportunities as it is 'intended that he will still be in his current surroundings by the time the summer transfer window slams shut on September 1.'
