Plans lodged to subdivide former Debenhams store in Ayr to make way for three new retail units

Three new retail stores could be coming to Ayr Central Shopping Centre, if proposals are approved.

Ayrshire Live can reveal that plans have been lodged to subdivide the former Debenhams store on Luath Walk and Kyle Street.

The department store has remained vacant since Debenhams fell into administration in December 2020.

However, under a new plan the space would be subdivided to enable three new retail stores to come in and fill the void.
Agent in the proposals is Edinburgh-based Savills (UK) Ltd and the applicant is Gelmo Limited.
Their proposals relate to 'alterations and the subdivision' of the existing Class 1A retail unit (former Debenhams store) to create 'three separate Class 1A retail units'.
Two of the new retail stores would be located on the ground floor, with the third business on the first floor.
In correspondence with South Ayrshire Council, Savills said: 'The application site comprises a large, vacant retail unit formerly occupied by Debenhams with the Ayr Central Shopping Centre. The unit has dual frontage to Kyle Street and Luath Walk.

'The application proposals seeks permission for proposed alterations and subdivision of existing Class 1A retail unit to create three separate Class 1A retail units.
'The proposals will create three separate Class 1A retail units, two at the ground floor and one at the first floor. Given the existing Class 1A use of the existing unit, proposals are considered to wholly align with local and national planning policies.'
It is unclear at this stage what type of retail units have been pencilled in as part of the proposals, although TK Maxx were part of an earlier planning application at the same site .

In April, Ayrshire Live told how the discount retail giant lodged plans to erect signage at the former Debenhams store.
The applicants, TJX Europe, also submitted proposals f or the installation of roof mounted plant and equipment and 'associated works.'
Representing TK Maxx in those proposals were agents, Edinburgh-based CDA.
At the time plans showed TK Maxx signage and proposals for the 'landlord' based on the ground floor with a 'tenant' on the upper floor.
Those plans were approved by council planners.

Road chiefs want to trial a new way of entering one of the region's most popular retail parks. Parc Prestatyn was opened back in 2013 and includes retailers like Tesco Extra, Marks & Spencer, and TK Maxx. It has two entrances and exits but most traffic from the centre of the town is directed towards the gateway off the high street. Denbighshire council currently has £3m from UK Government to spend on improving the town centre and as part of this it is looking at re-directing that traffic to ease congestion on the high street. A seven day trial will start on Monday. A spokesperson for Denbighshire council said: "Following feedback received from the Prestatyn High Street improvement scheme consultation, we will be trialling a new way of getting into the retail park. "Between 18 and 24 August 2025 visitors driving to the retail park will turn onto Nant Hall Road instead of down the High Street to help alleviate congestion on the High Street. Join the North Wales Live Whatsapp community now "Vehicles travelling to Parc Prestatyn from the B5120 (and Penisadre Road) will be directed down Nant Hall Road (illustrated in green below). This is different from the current directed route via High Street and Bridge Road (illustrated in red below)." They added: "This is not a mandatory trial so no Traffic Regulation Order or Temporary Traffic Regulation Order will be needed. Findings from the trial will be shared in the autumn." The aims of the £3m regeneration fund are to make public areas look and feel nicer, make it easier to access the town centre from key locations such as the retail park, railway station and bus station, improve signage around the town so people can find their way around more easily and encourage greater tourism and investment. Feedback from the traffic trial will be revealed this October. The estimated timescale for completion of the project is October 2027.

Fans of the brand may be pleased to hear that Boohoo has changed its name to Debenhams, reviving the popular 247-year-old brand. Unfortunately though, physical stores are not expected to return. Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen to bring a slice of Italian heritage back to Oban

Oban is set to welcome Riccardough's, a new food business with a whole lot of history behind it. And one that promises to serve up a taste of authentic Italian pizza, many locals will remember fondly. Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen, a newly refurbished and eye-catching mobile pizza van, will soon be hitting the streets of Oban and surrounding villages. Behind the venture is 61-year-old Riccardo Pacitti, the son of the late Luigi and Dorina Pacitti, who ran the much-loved Luigi's Pizzeria and chip shop in the town for many years. Luigi's chip shop in Oban was a local institution. Known for its authentic Italian pizza and classic fish and chips, it became a community favourite. For years, locals and visitors alike queued for its fresh flavours and the warm, family-run atmosphere that made it a much-missed part of the town's food scene. The Pacitti family were pioneers of authentic Italian pizza in Oban, introducing freshly made bases and traditional toppings to customers long before the trend took off in Scotland. 'I was working in the chip shop at the time and people just loved it,' said Riccardo. 'We were the first in Oban to serve real, fresh Italian pizza. It's something I've always been proud of.' After leaving the family business, Riccardo spent 22 years working at sea. He returned home to Oban in 2020 due to health reasons and the impact of the Covid pandemic. Since then, he has been looking for a way back into the food trade — but finding a restaurant premises proved difficult. 'I was never thinking about a van,' he said. 'But my daughter Natalie and her partner David encouraged me to give it a go.' Natalie runs a successful beauty business Oro Rosa, in the shop premises her grandparents once owned, and David MacPhee runs a digital marketing company, Digital Minded, and the This is Oban website. 'They've really helped me get this off the ground,' Riccardo said. The result is Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen — a fully renovated pizza van that has been in the works since March and has just received a striking new wrap from Impact Branding. Riccardo grew up steeped in Italian cooking, learning recipes and techniques from his parents. He says Riccardough's will allow him to share that heritage with a new generation of customers. Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen will serve at lunchtimes in Oban town centre near Tesco, before moving on to villages such as Connel, Dunbeg and others in the evenings. The van will also be available for parties, weddings and events, with Riccardo working on a set schedule so people know when and where to find it. As for the menu, Riccardo is keeping his cards close to his chest. 'I'm keeping the recipe and flavours under my chef's hat for now,' he said. 'But let's just say they'll be familiar to anyone who remembers Luigi's Pizzeria.' With the final touches being put in place, Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen is expected to open very soon.
