The eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) has embarked on a critical journey to redefine its Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN) under the GO!Durban programme, presenting a revised strategy aimed at overcoming key challenges in its implementation.
In its efforts to address setbacks, including the prolonged negotiations within the minibus taxi and bus industries that stalled progress in 2021, the ETA's new strategy reflects a proactive realignment with national priorities and frameworks.
"The revised plan was shaped through extensive engagements and collaboration with government stakeholders, focusing on ensuring that the rollout aligns seamlessly with the overarching objectives of the National Department of Transport," the City said.
According to Nelisiwe Zama, Acting Director of ETA, this updated approach is pivotal to the maturation of a world-class public transport system that prioritises inclusivity and sustainability.
'We are determined to deliver this vision through robust partnerships with other government sectors, public transport stakeholders, communities, and potential users of the system,' she commented.
As part of the revised strategy, the ETA aims to accelerate short-term delivery plans while ensuring long-term viability. Where dedicated roadways are yet to be operational, GO!Durban will initiate quality, scheduled bus services within mixed traffic conditions.
Zama explained that these will utilise the distinctive GO!Durban-branded fleet and integrated fare management system, providing users with a seamless experience across the IPTN.
As dedicated roadways come online, the existing services will be transitioned smoothly, maintaining consistency for commuters.
This plan is a testament to the commitment of the ETA to ensure that public transport remains accessible and user-friendly for all citizens.
In the coming days, ETA will initiate an in-depth engagement process with all relevant stakeholders, including regional briefings and discussions with affected minibus taxi and bus operators specific to phase one routes of the network.

Stellantis to launch Leapmotor EVs in South Africa later this year

Stellantis plans to sell Chinese-branded electric vehicles (EVs) developed by its partner Leapmotor in South Africa starting with the C10 from September, the company said on Tuesday. The C10 is an electric SUV with a petrol engine used only to charge the battery. More Leapmotor models are expected to be launched next year, including fully electric models, said Mike Whitfield, MD of Stellantis South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Leapmotor created waves with its recent rollout of the all-electric B10 SUV equipped with smart-driving features and lidar sensing technology for less than $18,000 (R316,865). In Stellantis bought a 21% stake in Leapmotor for $1.6bn (R28.17bn). The two carmakers also formed the joint venture Leapmotor International, in which Stellantis holds a 51% stake. Leapmotor will help the world's fourth largest carmaker widen its range of affordable EVs, as it presses ahead with electrification while other Chinese carmakers including BYD and Chery Auto are aggressively expanding into Africa. 'South Africa is a critical market for Stellantis and we are committed to unlocking its potential through product, innovation and meaningful partnerships,' Whitfield said. Stellantis, which entered the South African market four years ago, is building a new plant in the country with a maximum capacity of 100,000 vehicles by 2030. It plans to become the No 1 player in the Middle East and Africa region with 1-million vehicles sold by 2030, with 35% expected to be electric. In 2024 it sold 500,000 cars in the Middle East and Africa. With more than 60% of the South African market concentrated below the R400,000 price point, Stellantis's Citroën C3 range is gaining strong traction, with the upcoming C3 Basalt set to complete a competitive line-up in the accessible B-hatch and SUV segments early next year, Whitfield said. Stellantis will also launch the Citroën C3 Hola panel van, its entry into the growing commercial vehicle sector aimed at small business owners.

Scammer targets Durban seafood business; owner loses thousands to online fraud

In a shocking incident that underscores the rising tide of online scams, a Durban-based seafood business has suffered a considerable loss of R6,492 at the hands of a cunning fraudster this past weekend. The owner, who remains unnamed, reported the incident to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) after discovering that several Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT) for seafood orders had failed to reflect in their account. The ordeal began on Friday when the scammer made contact with the business through WhatsApp, placing a sizable order that included seafood boil, prawn platters, and an assortment of frozen seafood. To validate the transaction, the fraudster provided what appeared to be a convincing proof of payment from First National Bank (FNB). Believing the payment to be genuine, the business owner prepared the order, which was subsequently collected by an E-Hailing driver. The following day, the scammer placed a second order worth R4,300.00. However, the owner's instinct kicked in, and they requested an instant payment before releasing the goods. The scammer again sent a fraudulent proof of payment, but this time, the owner was wary. Upon contacting their bank for verification, they were informed that the payments had never been made, marking the moment the owner realised they had been scammed. In a twist of deception, the scammer persistently contacted the owner afterwards, falsely claiming that the payment had been successful. This individual, described as an Indian male, is just one among many con artists employing similar tactics to exploit small business owners. The modus operandi of these scammers often involves recruiting unsuspecting E-Hailing drivers to collect goods. After providing drivers with an address and directing them to leave the products in unsecured locations, the con artists promptly pay them through cash transfer services while creating an elaborate web of deceit that complicates the recovery of stolen goods. Scams like this are proliferating, particularly on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, where sellers are pressured into swift transactions without confirming the legitimacy of a payment. 'Buyers often target sellers during banking hours or intend to verify payments in a limited timeframe, making it ripe for unscrupulous tactics,' warned a RUSA spokesperson. In light of this incident, the public is urged to exercise due diligence by verifying all bank deposits prior to releasing any goods, especially during online transactions. As these scams continue to evolve, taking precautionary steps can help guard against future fraud.
