India–Vietnam trade should reach $20 billion, Nguyen Thanh Hai, Ambassador of Vietnam to India, said on Monday in Kolkata.
'Trade is an important pillar in our partnership, with bilateral trade reaching $15 billion. But if you look at the total volume of trade of each of the countries, it is a small proportion,' the Ambassador said at a session organised by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce.
'There is a lot of potential. We need to find a way to promote further trade with each other,' he added.
The environment was 'very conducive' to promote trade further, he said.

As India and the United States scramble to ink an interim trade deal by July 9, many negotiations may have to wait until August 1

The global trade relationships of the United States have been fairly chaotic under Donald Trump's current administration due to the President's heavy focus on imposing sweeping tariffs on April 2, 2025, or as Trump called it, 'Liberation Day'. Ever since that moment, countries all over the world have sought to finalize new trade deals with the global superpower in order to reestablish a stable relationship. India has been in the midst of its own negotiations with the United States, and had hoped to finalize an interim trade agreement by July 9. However, it now appears increasingly likely that this interim agreement will be limited to the scope of goods, with agreements on services and labor needing to be tabled for the later August 1 deadline set by the Trump administration. India-US trade interim trade deal will not be comprehensive The global economy is on tenterhooks in the run-up to US President Trump's July 9 deadline for dozens of countries to reach trade deals or face sharply higher all you need to know The interim trade deal that India is attempting to finalize by July 9 is unlikely to be all-encompassing. The negotiations had reportedly reached the last leg before a number of complications cropped up. The Trump administration's Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, played hardball about the administration's deadlines in a July 6 CNN interview, saying: 'We're going to be very busy over the next 72 hours. President Trump is going to be sending letters to some of our trading partners saying that if you don't move things along, then on August 1, you will boomerang back to your April 2 tariff level.' While India's negotiators, including led by Chief Negotiator and Special Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal have been busy discussing matters with the United States, the scope of the interim agreement is likely to be limited to only goods that exclude contentious items. The United States plans on making new trade announcements on July 9 Bessent says U.S. close to several trade deals ahead of July 9 tariff deadline Scott Bessent and Donald Trump have indicated that they expect a lot of trade deals to be in place by July 9. It remains to be seen how definitive these trade agreements will be, as the President himself seemed ambiguous about whether most countries would actually reach a deal, or just receive 'a letter'. The administration's outer deadline of August 1 implies that there will be plenty of negotiations to come even after the July 9 announcements.

FII turn net sellers of Indian equities in the first week of July: Is a market correction coming?

After three months of consistent buying, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have turned cautious, becoming net sellers in the first week of July. Data from NSDL shows FIIs sold Indian equities worth ₹1,421 crore across four consecutive sessions, marking a clear pause in the buying momentum seen since April. The sell-off comes at a time when investors are bracing for key market-moving events — notably the July 9 US-India reciprocal tariff deadline and the upcoming Q1 earnings season. Analysts believe these twin triggers will shape the future course of FII activity. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, explained, 'Two factors could revive FII interest: a positive outcome on the trade deal front and robust corporate earnings. However, any disappointment on either front may further dampen sentiment.' Despite the recent outflows, the April–June quarter saw FIIs invest ₹38,673 crore in Indian equities, indicating strong prior conviction. Yet the recent market highs — Nifty hitting an eight-month peak on June 30 and Bank Nifty clocking a record on July 2 — have led to profit booking, particularly in sectors like capital goods and power. FIIs have been rotating their portfolios, exiting IT and autos while increasing exposure to financials, telecom, and oil & gas, Vijayakumar noted. Echoing the view, Trivesh D, COO at Tradejini, said, 'The profit booking seen after the rally was expected. But the intensity of daily selling is gradually reducing, hinting that selling pressure might be easing.' So far in July, the Nifty 50 has moved just 0.2%, reflecting a consolidation phase as traders await fresh triggers. With geopolitical uncertainty and global macro pressures also in play, the market's direction this week hinges on a few key developments. 'This week is crucial,' added Trivesh. 'T for Trade Deal, T for TCS earnings, and T for Thursday — July 9 — could collectively dictate whether FIIs return or stay on the sidelines.' Markets now await clarity — either a resolution on tariffs or a stellar Q1 report card — to drive the next move. Until then, expect caution and range-bound action.
