‘This vertical city is so dense, the only way to build is up': Victor Cheng's best phone picture

Victor Cheng describes his adopted city as 'organised chaos'. The photographer, originally from Toronto but now based in Hong Kong, says that while many people have a stereotypical view of the city, based on classic kung fu movies or Rush Hour, it's 'actually quite modern, and full of skyscrapers. It's also fast-paced; even at times when you have nowhere to be, you get caught up in the busy streets and start to feel you have to move faster!'
Despite that, Cheng says he sees the city as a 'photographer's paradise. There are so many photogenic spots and scenes.' The Yick Cheong building seen here, known colloquially as Monster Building or Monster Mansion, is usually teeming with locals and tourists. When Cheng took this shot, however, the Covid lockdown was in force.

'I think it gained its nickname after it was in a Transformers movie,' he says. 'It's a residential building, but downstairs there are shops, cafes and wet markets. Because of the pandemic, it felt like I had the place to myself. I set a timer, put the phone down and used the wide-angle lens to get the shot.'
Cheng later applied minor adjustments using the Lightroom app. 'I hope that people would be amazed at how dense this vertical city is,' Cheng says. 'Space is so limited that the only way to build is up.'

Buckingham Palace announces King Charles will address the nation next week

More info Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles is set to address the nation next week, marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. The King has pre-recorded an audio message that will be broadcast on 15 August, commemorating the anniversary of Japan's surrender to the Allies after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, effectively concluding the Second World War. This message will be aired prior to a remembrance service attended by the King and Queen, Second World War veterans, and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The BBC will broadcast live the service, which aims to honour all those who served in the Asia-Pacific theatre, including Burma Star recipients, British Indian Army veterans, former prisoners of war, and those who fought in key battles such as Kohima and Imphal in India. The Royal British Legion, in partnership with the Government, will host the event, where the King and his wife, along with other senior figures, will lay floral tributes, reports the Manchester Evening News. A national two-minute silence will conclude with a Red Arrows aerial display, and the service will end with a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, before the King and Queen attend a reception with Second World War veterans. While Charles and Camilla are attending the event at the National Memorial Arboretum, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will be present at a service at the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle, organised by the Royal British Legion Scotland. Simultaneously, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will join the congregation at the Far East Prisoners of War VJ Day 80th Anniversary Service at Norwich Cathedral, before attending a second commemorative service dedicated to the Children and Families of the Far East Prisoners of War in Suffolk. Before VJ Day, Sophie is scheduled to meet Second World War veteran Jim Wren, who was serving on HMS Repulse when he was captured and held on the Indonesian island of Sumatra until the end of the war. The events marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day will wrap up with a reception for veterans at Windsor Castle later in the autumn.

MasterChef fans call out Gregg Wallace's ‘odd interest' in contestant's Disney princess girlfriend

MASTERCHEF fans were left perplexed by what they described as an "odd interest" by Gregg Wallace in one of this year's contestant's girlfriend. The under-fire BBC show returned this week despite both Gregg and his co-host John Torode being sacked from the programm e after the show was probed by an investigation that stemmed from complaints surrounding Gregg's alleged lewd behaviour. 4 4 The series was recorded before allegations about Gregg were brought to light but the BBC have decided to still screen the episode as planned. During last night's episode, a BBC viewer was quick to call out an "odd" interaction between host Gregg and one of the aspiring chefs on the show. As the host spoke at length with Jordan, he began to open up about his personal life - including his girlfriend and her line of work. This seemed to pique Gregg's interest when he began to ask more questions about his partner. In the episode, as Jordan spoke about a recent trip to Japan, a confused-looking Gregg bluntly asked him: "What were you doing in Japan? Jordan replied: "Visiting my girlfriend. Gregg then asked: "What does she do?" As Jordan confirmed she was a "Disney princess," Gregg's face lit up as he boomed across the studio kitchen: "You're girlfriend is a Disney princess?!" Appearing put on the spot, Jordan joked back: "Yeah, it's a tough life Gregg." Gregg then enjoyed a roar of laughter as he was left open-mouthed at the admission. Picking up on the moment online, one viewer wrote on X: "Gregggg was oddly interested in his girlfriend. #masterchef." The moments comes as the cooking contest shaved off one million viewers from its latest series opener amid the ongoing furore surrounding the programme. Just 1.96million watched the first episode of Gregg Wallace and John Torode 's final series — down from 2.7m for last year's launch show. The shamed co-presenters, both 60, were fired last month after a report into conduct on the BBC cookery show upheld allegations against them. It sparked widespread calls for the latest series — filmed before Wallace and Torode were sacked — to be cancelled. The first three episodes were released on iPlayer on Wednesday morning, with fans noting a lack of Wallace and Torode's trademark banter with contestants. 4 4
