Turkey opens Spotify probe after 'provocative playlist' complaint
In a statement released on Friday, the competition authority said it had opened an investigation into "various allegations that the strategies and policies implemented by Spotify... in Turkey has caused anti-competitive effects in the music industry".
It said the probe would seek to establish whether Spotify gave more visibility to some artists and engaged in unfair practices in the distribution of royalties, thereby violating the competition law.
The investigation was announced the same day as deputy culture minister Batuhan Mumcu called for legal action against Spotify in a post on X, citing its "refusal" to respond to requests to remove playlists with names deemed offensive.
"Spotify persistently refuses to take the necessary steps despite all our previous warnings," he wrote.
"Content that targets our religious and national values and insults the beliefs of our society has not been corrected," he added, saying Turkey had been "closely monitoring content on Spotify for a long time".
- 'Targeting... sacred values' -
He pointed to content published "under the guise of 'playlists'.. that disregards our religious sensitivities toward our Prophet Mohammed, deliberately and unacceptably targeting the beliefs, sacred values, and spiritual world of our people".
He also singled out playlists allegedly targeting Emine Erdogan, wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which were "insidiously provocative and morally unacceptable".
"This irresponsibility and lack of oversight, which disregards the sensitivities of our society, has now become a legal matter.. I call on our competent institutions to take action," he wrote.
Attached to his post was an animated graphic showing a string of playlists with names referencing either Erdogan's wife or the life of the Prophet Mohammed.
In a statement, Spotify, which launched in Turkey in 2013, said its operations complied with "all applicable laws" but it would cooperate with the investigation although it lacked "details on the inspection's scope or focus".
"We are cooperating with the investigation, are actively seeking to understand it, and will work toward a swift, constructive resolution with the Turkish Competition Authority," the statement said, without making any mention of the playlist allegations.
It said in 2024, it had paid "over 2 billion Turkish lira ($25 million) to the local music industry" with its service playing a "pivotal (role) in growing Turkish artists' royalties globally".

I subscribe to Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal, but keep coming back to YouTube Music for one reason
Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority Thanos has his gemstones, and I have my music subscription services. I've subscribed to practically all the major streaming services. Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal — they all have their own unique strengths and quirks. Of course, I've tried to rationalize the cost by saying that I'm keeping my options open and that different services are good for different use cases, and even moods. Spotify Jam comes in clutch when I'm throwing a party. Other days, I want Apple Music's clean interface and easy AirPlay capabilities. Some days I'm chasing the top-tier high-fidelity streaming and catalog on Tidal. You've gotta have options, yeah? No other service's radio stations fill that dialed-in radio DJ-shaped hole in my heart. But when I'm not in the mood to overthink and just want solid 80s hair metal jams to roll on their own, I end up back on YouTube Music. Not because of the app design, collaborative features, or even for the massive content library. It's the radio. No other service's radio stations fill that dialed-in radio DJ-shaped hole in my heart the way that YouTube Music does. What's your preferred music streaming service? 0 votes Spotify NaN % Apple Music NaN % Tidal NaN % YouTube Music NaN % Qobuzz NaN % I like my physical media NaN % The funny thing is, I wasn't intentionally looking to make a move to YouTube Music. The service comes as a free add-on perk with my YouTube Premium subscription and I barely, if ever, used it. However, a while back, while streaming a live concert on YouTube, the autoplay queue filled up with a consistent stream of top-tier, relevant live videos and renditions of some of my favorite, and soon-to-be-favorite tracks. The music selection felt handpicked, though obviously it wasn't. YouTube knows my tastes in media better than most, and it was quietly DJing in the background, helping me discover deep cuts, B-sides, and mixing it up with all the usual favorites. On a lark, I popped open YouTube Music and kicked off a radio stream based on a single song. Little did I know that I was in for a full day of music listening. Predictable is fine, unpredictable is exciting Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority Look, Spotify's radios are fine if you're in the mood to stay within a familiar loop. They are particularly good if you want to stick to the chart toppers. Spotify's algorithms are famous for playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar, but everyone will agree that the deeper you go into the radio function, the more you observe that it is recycling the same few artists and tracks. Discoverability isn't Spotify's strong suit. On the other hand, Apple Music's stations tend to be more editorially curated, and I'm not even talking about the excellent Apple Music Classical app. These playlists are highly polished with tracks that seamlessly lead you in a mood or genre-based journey. However, while Apple Music does have a radio function, it also has the same pitfalls as Spotify. They're not very reactive, nor do they encourage discovering new bands. As good as the radio is, it just doesn't feel very personal. Discovery isn't Spotify's strong suit. Apple Music is heavily editorial driven. Tidal sits on its HiFi laurels. YouTube Music's radio works differently, and not just in how it recommends music. To start with, there's the library. YouTube Music doesn't just pull from a list of official studio releases. The app taps into the sprawling catalog of YouTube itself. That means your music feed can blend tracks from studio albums with live cuts, fan uploads that never made an official release, and deep cut remixes. All of that is tied into your own watch history on YouTube, giving it an additional source of truth about your likes and dislikes. All of that combines to give you a much richer variety of source material to pull from, and an algorithm that is willing to take a chance on presenting you with something fresh and unlike what you've heard already. I can, and have, started off with a single obscure track and ended up with a playlist moving seamlessly from 90s alt-rock deep cuts to a modern indie band that I've never heard before, while still retaining that flavor. Occasionally, YouTube Music might even throw in an acoustic version or alternate take on a popular track. There's always a surprise, rarely a bad one. Why YouTube Music wins my listening time Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority Even before we get into the custom radio function, it's worth mentioning that this vast library is tapped into YouTube Music's auto-generated playlists and recommendations, which put them ahead of similar features from other streaming services. The control that you have over a radio station even before it starts is another big reason to look into YouTube Music. The service includes a feature called the music tuner that, like Pandora, lets you blend artists and genres. But not just that, it lets you decide how adventurous you want to be with your music. There's an option to adjust the artist variety to pull in a wider range of acts, a music discovery option that lets you switch between discovery and familiarity depending on how you're feeling. YouTube Music even gives you the option to filter your radio experience further by choosing between popular tracks, deep cuts, new releases, and many more options. Spotify gives you nowhere close to that level of input. You can give YouTube Music's DJ a very specific set of instructions and leave it to figure out the rest. Usually, accurately. Another YouTube Music exclusive that I have my eye on is the new AI-enhanced Ask Music feature. Google tends to do staggered rollouts across geographies and accounts, so I'm still waiting for it to show up, but what I've seen so far looks extremely promising. Positioned as an enhancement of the current radio feature, it lets you create a radio station just by describing what you want to listen to. So, for example, you can type something like 'moody ambient, dark academia-inspired playlist for a rainy night when I'm reading a classic gothic horror book,' and it'll create a playlist fine-tuned exactly for that. If that prompt sounds oddly specific, it is. I've previously used ChatGPT to come up with playlist suggestions like the one I mentioned above, and having a tool like that deeply integrated into the music listening experience sounds fantastic. Most services already include mood-based playlists, but those tend to be fairly static collections that don't adapt to specific tastes. Ask Music takes a conversational, hyper-tuned experience, which is something I'm looking forward to testing out. There's something to be said about YouTube Music's integrated approach to music listening and discovery. Because it's tied to my Google account and a decade or more of YouTube history, it's working with years of implicit data that doesn't just include manually tapped likes or dislikes, but also how long I listened to something, how quickly I moved back or changed to the next track. That's data no other service has, or can have. To give you an example, I recently popped open YouTube Music and started a late-night play of atmospheric music by an Icelandic artist. No, not Bjork. Over the next hour or so, the station automatically introduced me to Scandinavian folk, minimalist piano pieces, and slow-paced electronic ambient tracks that fit the vibe, but not necessarily the genre. It encourages discovery, and by the end of my listening session ,I'd saved half a dozen tracks to my late-night playlist. Discovery meets comfort Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority Of course, YouTube Music isn't perfect either. The app can come across as a bit clunky, downloading music offline is way slower, and the sound quality can vary quite a bit depending on the source of the file. And if you're coming back to the app after a while, YouTube Music too can be guilty of repeating tracks. But it's rare, and it gives you the tools to avoid that. I'm not canceling my other subscriptions just yet. Be it Spotify's collaborative playlists or Jam, Apple Music's elite-tier human-curated playlists, or Tidal's unbeatable sound quality, every app has a cool trick that keeps me coming back for more. But YouTube Music gets a lot of playtime from me for its ability to curate the perfect playlist for what I'm feeling. It's the only streaming service that values my love for music, keeps me listening, discovering, and curious. And that's honestly the best thing a music streaming service can do. Follow

Barcelona rumored to have special fourth kit for El Clasico
Barcelona rumored to have special fourth kit for El Clasico originally appeared on The Sporting News Barcelona have been known in recent times to have special collaborations with artist for El Clasico games in relation to their partnership with Spotify. Artist like Drake, Rosalia, Karol G, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, and Travis Scott have had their logos on the front of the blaugrana jersey. Now, it seems that Barcelona will have a completely different jersey just for El Clasico this year. The image below comes from a Barca kit collector on X who goes by @memorabilia1899 that has been reliable in leaking Barcelona kit news. This kit is a homage to Ronaldinho's legendary performance in the Bernabeu where Barcelona won 3-0, Dinho had a brace, and he left the pitch applauded by the Madrid faithful as he turned his biggest rivals into admirers. You can see the minutes of each goal in the inside of the collar which is a nice extra touch. Besides that though, this kit has a unique zig zag stripe design that differs to the usual classic stripes of a Barcelona jersey. Whether fans will like this jersey or not will remain to be seen as some fans online aren't fans of the home kit for this season. It also puts an end to the 'Senyera kits' as Barcelona will use this as their 'special fourth kit'. It is unknown to be seen if Barcelona will continue having artists on their jersey but it's now pretty known they will have a new set of threads for El Clasico.

27 Things To Bring To A Housewarming Party They Will Actually Appreciate And Not Just Shove In A Cabinet And Forget About
A bubbly glass vase so they don't have to place all the gorgeous bouquets they're bound to be gifted in a drinking glass. The seven-inch vase is big enough to add a lil' bright accent to a room without drawing too much attention and would look downright lovely on a side table or shelf. And, much to many reviewers' pleasant surprise, it has the *perfect* dimensions to display the iconic Lego bouquet set. Moss wall art that'll be a unique take on the classic houseplant with zero responsibility and all the same green, earthy energy. The pet-safe moss is preserved, so absolutely no watering, sunlight, or trimming is required (just a light dusting now and then). And, because the cedar wood comes in all shapes and sizes, each spongy masterpiece is truly one of a kind. An Amazon Echo Dot, a small but mighty speaker that makes the day-to-day tasks of running a home just a little easier. There are *tons* of ways to use this device — not only can it play music and attach to home systems, but it's voice activated and does smaller tasks like searching the internet, keeping track of lists, and setting timers or alarms! The possibilities are truly endless, and as a bonus, it's sleek, lightweight, and unobtrusive. A Turkish hand towel that'll add a fresh pop of color to their kitchen and give their perpetually damp dishcloths a break. The towels are made of 100% Turkish cotton and hand-woven in a flat weave, meaning they're thin and lightweight, but still absorbent and quick-drying (basically, helps prevent that musty towel smell). And, the seller offers custom name embroidery in the color of your choice, which is just the cherry on top for making them feel extra special. A set of Brightland extra virgin olive oils so you can spoil the bread-dipping connoisseur in your life. Each bottle has its own flavor — "Awake" works best with hearty meals (think, crispy potatoes) and "Alive" has a more ~grassy~ taste to drizzle over greens or sorbets! Both are cold-pressed and made with early-harvest olives (for a stronger flavor!) and are perfect for zhuzhing up a home-cooked meal. As a bonus, the opaque bottles not only protect from damaging UV rays, but look *super* chic on a counter. Maldon sea salt flakes, a little gift with a *big* impact. Reviewers rave about how crunchy and flavorful this is as a finishing salt, both on meals and desserts. The packaging is not only resealable for max freshness, but the pretty design makes it worthy of a coveted spot on the kitchen counter. And, if you don't trust the reviewers' praises — Queen Elizabeth II herself appointed the company a Royal Warrant, a symbol of excellence, making them the *official* supplier of sea salt to the Royal Family (the salt world runs deep, y'all). A ceramic pedestal bowl, because nothing says ~homeowner~ like having a designated spot to put fruit. The minimalist design adds a little elegant *oomph* to a space while being simple enough to be versatile — reviewers have put it in their entryway for their wallet and keys and even used it as a "water trough" for their dogs. Very innovative. A stunning pair of sun and moon stained-glass bookends for the friend who somehow always knows what's going on with the stars. These celestial beauties are set in a sturdy wooden base and handmade with real glass, which can actually be interchanged with other designs offered by the seller! The unique pieces are sure to give a daily dose of dopamine — even if Mercury is in retrograde, or something. A set of retro vinyl coasters that are stored in a mini record player, because who doesn't appreciate small versions of big things, especially when they're functional? They're made of *actual* PVC and have a non-slip rubber backing and grooves to help keep condensation from spilling over. Each record has its own old-school, punny rock title, like my favorite hit song... "Hotel Cauliflower!" A custom address stamp to give their home the official ~seal of approval~. The gift set comes with a self-inking stamper, a black ink cartridge, and a gift certificate that lets them customize their new stamp design! It'll really help speed up the process for all the thank-you notes they'll lovingly send out after being showered with gifts, or even... invites to the next party. 👀 A set of cat salt and pepper shakers for anyone sharing their new space with their kitty friends (and who would never say no to more). The mischievous pair is hand-painted and made of ceramic that reviewers say feels nice and sturdy. They're also just a cute way to add a little whimsy to a kitchen, even if they're most definitely up to something... The Essential Book of Cocktails to *shake up* a mixing enthusiast's homemade blends. The book comes with over 400 recipes to try, guides to entertaining and setting up a home bar, interesting essays about the history of different drinks, *and* looks great as a coffee table (or bar cart!) book. Tell Me More, a conversation-starting game perfect for anyone who's been dreaming of finally hosting in their new space. The deck has 52 cards meant to spark interesting, thought-provoking conversations between people, with prompts that can easily be interpreted based on comfort levels. Reviewers say the cards work equally great as ice breakers between strangers or as a way of getting to know friends (or family!) on a deeper level. As a bonus, the small box has a super cute, minimal design and would look great on a coffee table. An Oster electric wine opener, because a new home calls for celebration without the huffing and puffing and twisting and pulling — just for the cork to break apart anyway. This gadget will take away the hassle for the friend who loves a glass with their meal (and is learning a thing or two about ~pairings~), and since it can open up to 30 bottles in one charge, it is especially perfect for anyone who loves to host! Not only is it a fun (and decision-free!) way for them to explore new genres, but it doubles as a unique poster that keeps track of everything they've seen (and possibly got into passionate debates about, because what do you mean Princess Mononoke beat Howl's Moving Castle...). A sunrise alarm clock because while moving is *super* exciting, it can also take a littleee time for someone to adjust to sleeping in a new space. The clock works by gradually brightening up a room, with three optional, non-aggressive (I'm looking at you, Radar) alarms, like bird chirps, available. At night, it works as a dimmable lamp and even plays white noises to fall asleep to — perfect for muffling out all the ~mysterious~ cracks and creaks of their new home. All the functions are super customizable and can even be set on a schedule, so it doubles as a great way to help them settle into a new routine! Their circadian rhythm will thank you. A custom book stamp for the friend who had you climbing flights of stairs carrying boxes filled with their endless TBR collection. Whether they have space for the towering shelves and rolling ladder of their dreams or not, a one-of-a-kind seal will help make their home library feel extra special. A Glow & Grow kit — if you can't decide between the classic candle or houseplant, why not choose both? This two-in-one gift comes as a fresh, nature-scented candle, and when it's burned down, can be used as a planter! It even comes with the seeds of your choice, whether that's cute daisies or basil for the friend who loves to cook. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving. A Marshall amp key holder so even your friend's entryway can match their super cool, music-loving vibe. The "Jack Rack" uses *real* amplifier parts and, best of all, comes with four jack plug key rings that can be easily (and, according to reviewers, very satisfyingly) clicked into the wall-mounted amplifier! Who knew keeping track of keys could be so rock star? A miniature frog garden statue to guard your friend's front porch and greet any guest who visits their home. This lil' pal works hard during the day gathering energy with its solar panel back, and at night enjoys the fruits of its labor with a glowing cup of joe. It also has a certain wise, stern energy that will keep your home-owning friend in check now that they've moved out of their parents' place. A home putting green because now that your friend has settled into their new space, they can re-focus on what really matters — improving their short game. This 3'x9' mat has a slight incline to help mimic the feel of a real course, three holes to practice different angles, a non-slip backing that keeps it stable during practice, *and* built-in hazards to catch the strays. Best of all, it can be easily rolled up and put away so it won't clash with their carefully curated decor. A Lodge enameled Dutch oven — *the* definition of a versatile kitchen workhorse and quite possibly the only pot they will ever need. This six-quart cast iron is an alternative to Le Creuset with all the same weight, heat distribution, and retention (to help prevent burning), and vivid color. The non-stick interior makes the pot easy to clean, and with the proper care, it has the potential to become the next family relic. Generations to come will be thanking you every time they bake bread, or braise short ribs, or slow-roast beans... seriously, the possibilities are endless. A freakin' crab utensil holder to wield your friend's saucy spoons and keep their counters drip free. The little cooking companion is made of a heat-resistant silicone with a rotating body to control where any mess goes *and* doubles as a steam releaser. It's cute, functional, and many reviewers have grown very attached. Oh, and its name is Red, btw. A set of reusable patterned napkins, because paper towels are *so* two apartments ago. The pack of 12 contains a random assortment of the seller's slightly misprinted designs, but they're just as cute and eye-catching as the originals. They're equally perfect for complementing the ~fancy~ dishes during dinner parties or to whip out when their new takeout spot forgets to include napkins. A Brooklinen super plush robe so they can take a break from the moving frenzy by plopping onto the bed post-shower and scrolling TikTok for an hour... or two. The robe is made of 100% Turkish cotton, giving it that ~luxurious feel~ and making it extra soft, durable, and absorbent. Sure, they may have a mountain of boxes somewhere waiting to be unpacked, but this thing says, "I've got it alllll under control." Fake it 'til you make it, y'all. A set of shower steamers to create a luxe, spa-like experience in the comfort of their own (new!) home. The tablets are infused with real petals (that reviewers say leave no stains) and essential oils that gradually release with the steam of a shower. Each also has its own scent for different moods — like lavender, to wind down after a particularly long day of lifting boxes, or eucalyptus and mint, to wake up the next morning when it's time to unpack... The Pink Stuff cleaning kit, because as Monica Gellar taught us, friends don't let friends get mildew. This holy grail pack comes with the essentials for keeping that ~new home~ feel, like low-effort bathroom cleaners, pink (!!) microfibre cloths, and the iconic paste, which fights stains like nobody's business without that strong chemical smell. As your friends know, there are few things more valuable than your cleaning wisdom, which will *probably* change their life (or at least, their cleaning game).
