Extreme heat at the Club World Cup: Latest weather updates at tournament venues

USA Today24-06-2025
The FIFA Club World Cup was supposed to be a bright light shining on the most popular sport in the world, giving Americans a chance to see the best footballers on Earth on American soil. Well, the bright light part has been true at least. Unfortunately, it's also a burning light.
Though the Club World Cup has yet to reach the knockout stages, thunderstorms delayed several group stage matches last week, and now blistering heat is taking its toll on the tournament as well, with extreme temperatures causing major concerns for several clubs involved in the tournament.
On Saturday, June 21, Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac told the media that he was "sweating like (he'd) just come out of a sauna" following his team's victory on TQL Field in Cincinnati. The temperature reached 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or 32 degrees Celsius. It was so hot that Dortmund's subs weren't even on the field during the game.
But it's not just TQL that's feeling the heat. The American Northeast in general has offered difficult conditions for many teams.
The heat wave is supposed to ramp up throughout this week as well. Clearly, the weather concerns that many fans had at the start of the tournament are starting to come to fruition.
Club World Cup games: Schedule, times, how to watch for June 23
Which venues are experiencing issues?
According to CBS News, the heat wave is strongest in the American northeast with some states recording record-high temperatures. Areas in the mid-Atlantic like Maryland and Virginia are also under extreme heat warnings. Meanwhile, states in the Midwest like Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio are facing blazing heat as well.
While other areas further south like Atlanta and Nashville are also suffering the affects of the heat wave, those cities are more used to temperatures in the 90s during the summer.
Here are the Club World Cup stadiums affected most (with the forecast for Tuesday, June 24 according to The Weather Channel)
The heat wave is expected to persist until the middle of next week in some areas, meaning the Round of 16 knockout matches will likely suffer from similar heat issues.

Will these same problems occur when the U.S. hosts the World Cup?
These heat issues have raised concerns for next year's big event as well. The United States will host the 2026 World Cup, with the first games kicking off on June 11. Similar heat issues would create a terrible atmosphere for arguably the world's biggest sporting event.
The New York Times reports that it is highly likely similar heat waves occur when the World Cup begins. Given that there were already struggles with heat during the 2024 Copa America, officials are right to be concerned with how this will affect players and fans. It will only be heightened by the fact that most of the games are scheduled for afternoon start times.
When do the knockout stages begin for the Club World Cup?
The knockout stage begins on Saturday, June 28, with the winners of Group A and Group C taking on the runner-ups in Groups B and D, respectively. Round of 16 matchups will continue through Tuesday, July 1, which could be around the time that the heat starts dying down.

Keegan Bradley as a playing captain? Rory McIlroy thinks the Ryder Cup is too big for that now

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Rory McIlroy believes the Ryder Cup has become too big of an event for a captain to play in the matches and said Wednesday he already shot down the idea when approached about doing it himself someday. But he is no less fascinated by the conundrum facing U.S. captain Keegan Bradley. 'I definitely think he's one of the best 12 American players right now,' McIlroy said Wednesday ahead of the BMW Championship. 'That's why everyone is so interested and it's such a compelling case. I'm just as interested as everyone else to see how it all plays out.' That includes Bradley, who is no ordinary Ryder Cup captain. He is 39, the youngest U.S. captain since Arnold Palmer at age 34 in 1963. He also is the defending champion of the BMW Championship, one of his two PGA Tour titles over the last year that has put him in position to make the team on his own. He would have to win at Caves Valley to earn one of six automatic spots. Then, he makes six captain's picks after next week's Tour Championship. The Ryder Cup is Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black. 'I can truly sit here right now and say I don't know what's going to happen,' Bradley said. 'I have to look at myself just like any other player trying to make the team.' The Ryder Cup hasn't had a playing captain since Palmer at East Lake 62 years ago, when the King was still in his prime (he won the Masters the following year) and matches were not much of a competition against players from only Britain and Ireland. Bradley is No. 10 in the Ryder Cup standings. He is No. 12 in the world, with only six other Americans ranked ahead of him. He also is No. 14 in the FedEx Cup, with only eight other Americans ahead on that list. 'If I was the captain, I'd pick Keegan. I think he's played great,' Patrick Cantlay said. Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world who long ago clinched his spot on another American team, said Bradley could only add to what he considers a strong team. 'If that's something that Keegan wants to be part of the team and wants to play, I think he's a guy we'd all love to have on the team,' Scheffler said. McIlroy played with him for two days in the Travelers Championship — Bradley went on to win that week — and said at the time, 'If he doesn't finish in the top six and he doesn't pick himself, then you could say America aren't going with their very best.' Even so, McIlroy has his doubts. The Ryder Cup has become the largest spectacle in golf. Bradley is on calls every week for planning and other logistics that are involved. There are media responsibilities daily during the Ryder Cup. There are lineups to consider. 'You think about the extra media that a captain has to do, you think about the extra meetings that the captains have to do with the vice captains, with the PGA of America, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony,' McIlroy said. "There's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big. 'If you'd have said it 20 years ago, I'd say, yeah, it was probably possible to do,' he said. 'But how big of a spectacle and everything that's on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in.' He also suggested Bradley probably would be limited to playing one of the two sessions on Friday and Saturday, which might hurt the U.S. team if Bradley had a hot hand that week. Tiger Woods was playing captain at the 2019 Presidents Cup — far less intense, and an event the Americans haven't lost since 1998 — and played only one session a day at Royal Melbourne. 'There's a lot of different things that go into it, and that's why I think ... look, it's just my opinion, but I think it would just be very difficult to do.' Bradley has considered all this, too. He said ultimately he would look at himself the way he does any other potential pick, with advice from his assistant captains and the six players who automatically qualify. 'He might be right,' Bradley said of McIlroy's opinion. 'We don't know. No one knows. Yeah, like everybody's telling me to start the year that a player can't be captain and have a good year. For me, I feel like this is one of my best years that I've ever had.' Bradley said he has spent a career leaning on people for advice on how to prepare for majors, dealing with the media, fulfilling corporate obligations, all elements of professional golf. 'In this instance, there's no one to call,' Bradley said. 'So nobody knows how this could work.' ___

🔥 Juve see off Next Gen 2-0, Vlahović booed but scores 😨

After the draw against Reggiana and the 2-1 victory in the last friendly in Dortmund, Juventus returned to the pitch for their customary pre-season match against Next Gen. Watch Atalanta-Juventus on OneFootball: buy the match here for 2.99 euros. Just days before the start of the new Serie A season, Tudor's boys beat Next Gen 2-0. Douglas Luiz and Vlahovic scored, but the match held more than a few surprises. 🎯 Douglas Luiz scores: a message to Tudor? The real surprise was Douglas Luiz, who played behind Vlahovic: in the 15th minute, the Brazilian found the net with a header, taking advantage of a cross from the left after his own shot was blocked. A goal that also sends a clear signal about his future: there is real interest from the Premier League in the midfielder, but in the meantime, a goal and a message for the future? 😱 Boos rain down on Vlahovic Just a few minutes later, Vlahovic also had the chance to celebrate in front of the home fans for the last time (?). However, the Serbian can't put a very tough period behind him, and the crowd doesn't forgive him. Dusan, targeted by the Bianconeri fans because of a massive salary that makes his transfer impossible and blocks Juve's transfer market, shoots way over the bar and the crowd doesn't forgive: the rain of boos is inevitable. 👋 A goal that feels like goodbye However, the 2000-born striker didn't lack character, and in the 33rd minute he finally scored the goal that silenced the boos. The Serbian was sent through on goal by Douglas Luiz and this time, one-on-one with Mangiapoco, he didn't miss. 🔚 Pitch invasion stops the match at 51' Juve returned to the locker room with a 2-0 lead that would prove final: just six minutes into the second half, in fact, the usual pitch invasion by the Bianconeri fans forced the final whistle. The whole Stadium poured onto the pitch to embrace their idols: Juventus beat the second team, and it's a big party in Turin. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. UFC announces new broadcast partner and it will impact how you watch the biggest fights

The UFC has finally announced its new broadcaster for 2026 and onwards, having signed with Paramount+ as its deal with ESPN comes to an end. For months, the UFC – the flagship promotion in mixed martial arts – had been expected to announce its next broadcast partner, with reports suggesting that the company would part ways with ESPN. The UFC signed with ESPN in 2018 and began a partnership in 2019, but their contract expires this year. It was thought by some that the UFC could end up on Netflix, given the streaming platform is the main global broadcaster of WWE – the professional wrestling behemoth that is essentially the UFC's sister company under ownership group TKO. Ironically, WWE just signed a broadcast deal for ESPN to show certain events going forward. However, UFC president Dana White wrote on X/Twitter on Monday (11 August): 'Breaking News, UFC has a new home in 2026 only on @paramountplus.' The American, 56, attached a statement confirming the end of the UFC's pay-per-view model as part of this new deal. The statement also said CBS, a cable network in the US, will show certain fights. The statement read: 'This historic deal with Paramount and CBS is incredible for UFC fans and our athletes. For the first time ever, fans in the US will have access to all UFC content without a Pay-Per-View model. '[This makes] it more affordable and accessible to view the greatest fights on a massive platform. This deal puts UFC amongst the biggest sports in the world. The exposure provided by Paramount and CBS networks under this new structure is a huge win for our athletes and anyone who watches and loves this sport.' Per a press release, Paramount has acquired the UFC broadcast rights in a seven-year deal with an average annual value of $1.1bn. Also per that release, 2026 is set to feature 13 numbered events (previously pay-per-view events, for example UFC 317, 318, 319) and 30 Fight Night events. TNT Sports is currently the UFC's UK broadcaster and is available through discovery+, and it is understood that Monday's announcement will not affect UK viewers.
