Elon Musk threatens Apple with lawsuit over OpenAI, sparking Sam Altman feud
'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action,' Musk said in a post on X.
In a post earlier that day, he wrote: 'Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your 'Must Have' section when X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps? Are you playing politics?'
OpenAI's ChatGPT currently holds the top spot in the App Store's 'Top Free Apps' section in the US, while xAI's Grok ranks fifth. Apple has a partnership with OpenAI that integrates ChatGPT into iPhones, iPads and Macs. Apple and xAI did not provide comment.
Altman responded to Musk on X: 'This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like.' Musk has bent X's algorithmic recommendations to favor his own tweets, according to multiple reports.
Altman and Musk founded OpenAI together in 2015, but Musk left the startup and rescinded funding in 2018 after proposing to take it over, a petition other executives rebuffed. Musk has since sued the company twice over its planned transition to a for-profit enterprise, alleging 'deceit of Shakespearean proportions'. Altman has cast Musk as a bitter and petty ex-partner who was jealous of the company's success after departing.
Musk replied to Altman's tweet: 'You got 3M views on your bullshit post, you liar, far more than I've received on many of mine, despite me having 50 times your follower count!'
Altman replied to Musk multiple times, first calling his lack of views a 'skill issue', then 'or bots', and then offered a legal question of his own: 'Will you sign an affidavit that you have never directed changes to the X algorithm in a way that has hurt your competitors or helped your own companies? i will apologize if so.'
Users on X – through the community notes feature – have pointed out that a few apps besides OpenAI have taken the top spot on the App Store this year.
Chinese AI app DeepSeek reached the No 1 spot on the platform in January, while in July, Perplexity took first place in India's App Store – both occurring after the OpenAI and Apple partnership struck last year.
One user asked X's native AI, Grok, who was right in the feud. The chatbot replied: 'Based on verified evidence, Sam Altman is right.'

Musk's comments come as regulators and rivals intensify scrutiny of Apple's control over its App Store.
Earlier this year, Apple was ordered to pay a fine of €500m ($581.15m) by the EU antitrust enforcer, which said the company's restrictions prevented developers from steering users outside the App Store.
The US Department of Justice filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple in early 2024, accusing the iPhone maker of creating and maintaining 'broad, sustained, and illegal' smartphone monopoly.

Schrödinger stops development of blood cancer therapy after two patient deaths
Aug 14 (Reuters) - Schrödinger (SDGR.O), opens new tab said on Thursday it has stopped the development of an experimental drug after the death of two patients with a type of blood cancer in an early-stage trial, sending its shares down nearly 17% before the bell. The company was testing the therapy, SGR-2921, in patients with high-risk myelodysplastic syndromes, a group of blood cancers in which the bone marrow doesn't produce enough healthy blood cells, and its more serious form - acute myeloid leukemia. The drug was considered to have contributed to the deaths of two AML patients in the trial, the company said. "While disappointing given the early clinical activity observed, we believe this is the right decision for patients," Chief Medical Officer Margaret Dugan said. In pre-clinical trial, the therapy showed responses against the cancer, which suggested SGR-2921 could ultimately be used in combination with standard of care treatments, the company said. The experimental drug was designed to work by blocking CDC7, a protein that helps cancer cells repair DNA damage during replication. By inhibiting this protein, the drug causes cancer cells to accumulate fatal levels of DNA damage.

US producer prices accelerate in July as costs of services and goods surge
WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - U.S. producer prices increased more than expected in July amid a surge in the costs of services and goods, suggesting a broader pickup in inflation in the months ahead. The producer price index for final demand jumped 0.9% last month after being unchanged in June, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the PPI rising 0.2%. Services prices soared 1.1%, the largest gain since March 2022, amid strong increases in machinery and equipment wholesaling, costs of portfolio management, hotels and motels, and road transportation of freight. Good prices vaulted 0.7%, the biggest gain since in January. There were strong increases in the prices of vegetables, meat and eggs. With the July report, the BLS ended the calculation and publication of approximately 350 indexes, including data from the PPI Final Demand-Intermediate Demand, special index, industry and commodity classifications. The agency has suffered years of underfunding under both Republican and Democratic administrations, a situation worsened by an unprecedented campaign by President Donald Trump's White House to remake the federal government through deep spending cuts and mass layoffs of public workers. The resource constraints have impacted the closely watched employment report and also resulted in the suspension of data collection for portions of the CPI basket in some areas across the country. This has raised concerns about the quality of the government-produced economic data, long viewed as the gold standard. The nomination of Heritage Foundation economist E.J. Antoni, a critic of the BLS, to head the statistics agency, is also adding another layer of worry over data quality. In the 12 months through July, the PPI increased 3.3% after advancing 2.4% in June. The pass-through from Trump's sweeping tariffs has so far been limited, but the PPI report supported economists' expectations for the import duties to drive up inflation in the coming months. The government on Tuesday reported a mild increase in consumer prices in July, though rising costs for services like dental care and airline tickets caused a measure of underlying inflation to post its largest gain in six months. While financial markets have priced in an interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve next month, rising services inflation and the expectation tariffs could still significantly boost goods prices left some economists doubtful of a resumption in policy easing in the absence of labor market deterioration. The U.S. central bank left its benchmark overnight interest rate in the 4.25%-4.50% range last month for the fifth-straight time since December. Prior to the PPI report, economists estimated the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, excluding the volatile food and energy components, increased 0.3% in July after a similar gain in June. That would raise the year-on-year increase in the so-called core PCE inflation to 2.9% from 2.8% in June. Core PCE inflation is one of the measures tracked by the Fed for its 2% target.
