Brugge star revels in Rangers fans' boos as fortress Ibrox crumbles
Club Brugge hero Brandon Mechele has confessed he loved hearing the boos rain down from the stands at Ibrox Stadium on Tuesday night.
Rangers have a mountain to climb to reach the league phase of the Champions League after a 3-1 shellacking at home to the Belgians.
Russell Martin's side shipped three goals inside 20 minutes – to spark a mass exodus of fans.
It was a calamitous opening and veteran defender Mechele's superb strike on his 500th appearance for Club Brugge sparked furious scenes among home supporters, with hundreds walking out in outrage.
And the Belgian international revealed he was delighted to hear it.
He said: "We silenced the crowd to the extent they even booed their own players.
"It was fantastic to come here and win and to score such a beautiful goal made it even more special. It's one for the history books.
"We were really strong in the first half and we had more chances to score.
"But it got tougher when we conceded a quick goal in the second half. We tried to slow the pace of the match and threatened with a few counterattacks. Defensively, we were good.
"At home, if we play like we did in the first half, we should be able to go through, but it's still football, so we have to be careful.
"Next week is incredibly important."
And opening goalscorer Romeo Vermant admitted he couldn't believe it when he was gifted an early opening goal after defender Nasser Djiga inexplicably didn't deal with a high ball.
Vermant said: "It's ideal to score after two minutes, especially after a mistake from them.
"I expected the defender or the keeper to just pick the ball up, but to my surprise, they both let it go.
"Then it was just a case of going for it and yes, it was a pretty good finish, even if I say so myself."

Having agreed a pre-contract deal to sign him from MLS side LAFC, the Gers got the deal done in August 2023 for £1.2million. But his time in Glasgow has been a nightmare. Finding starts hard to come by, he made just nine league appearances in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign. He was red-carded against Dundee in what is his last Premiership appearance to date. When Philippe Clement replaced Beale as Gers boss, Cifuentes' future was immediately in doubt. He joined Brazilian club Cruzeiro on loan in February 2024, but that deal was ripped up just six months later. That deal was ended to allow him to join Greek outfit Aris on a season-long loan for the 2024/25 campaign. Cifuentes impressed buy Aris didn't take up their option to make it permanent. Linfield are better prepared and battle-ready for second crack at Shelbourne, insists David Healy
The two League champions are reunited in a tasty UEFA Conference League playoff with the first leg at Tolka Park on Thursday night. Shelbourne ran out 2-1 aggregate victors in a Champions League first qualifying round tie last month, winning the first leg 1-0 in Dublin followed by a 1-1 draw at Windsor Park. Linfield were undercooked ahead of their venture south but they have now played seven competitive games, including six European battles. "We will find out just how much better we are but, personally, I think we have improved," said the Blues boss. "Our fitness levels are better, our performance levels are hopefully better. "On our previous visit here we hadn't played a competitive game but we have now played seven. "We are getting to where we want to be. Are we top level? Not yet in terms of physicality and what we want to see. But we are certainly better physically than the first Tolka Park game." Linfield had chances to defeat Shels in their first clash and Ben Hall's sending off at Windsor Park didn't help their cause, but Healy accepts the better side edged it. "Over the two legs Shels probably deserved to go through," he added. "It felt like the two teams were destined to meet again. "I believe people in the League of Ireland, and Shelbourne especially, were pleased with the draw, so it's up to us to perform and show supporters of both clubs that we have improved from the first game here."
