Govt looks into transforming used tyres into sustainable resource
Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Chan Foong Hin said during the Minister Question Time that his ministry is spearheading the initiative aiming to harness recycled rubber to create environmentally friendly products and reduce waste.
"Malaysia imported various tyres valued at RM3.53bil in 2024, with local consumption estimated at 22 million units annually.
"Without recycling, millions of these tyres would become waste," he said in response to a question by Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed@Hashim (PN-Kuala Terengganu).
Chan noted that the Malaysian Rubber Board (LGM) is researching innovative uses for recycled tires, such as Recovered Carbon Black (RCB), obtained through a thermochemical process.
"RCB can serve as a sustainable alternative in rubber production, significantly contributing to the industry's sustainability," he said.
Research is also underway to explore the potential of using recycled rubber in various applications, including road paving, bitumen additives, rubber mats and footwear, he said.
"The use of recycled rubber in these areas not only provides economic value but also aligns with our environmental goals," Chan added.
To support these efforts, Chan said the Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) offers pre-commercialisation funding and industrial collaboration opportunities to develop and market innovative products derived from used tyres.
"The MRC also promotes automation and green technology in the rubber industry to enhance efficiency and competitiveness."
To an additional question from Ahmad Amzad and Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka), Chan acknowledged the challenges in waste management and the importance of expanding the use of recycled rubber in public and private projects.
"The oversight of waste management falls under the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry.
"Coincidentally, my minister is also overseeing this ministry now. I think we can look at these issues more comprehensively," he said, referring to Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani who has been tasked with temporarily overseeing the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry.
Chan emphasised the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders, including research institutions and industry players, to ensure the effective commercialisation of recycled tyre products.
"By working together, we can unlock the full potential of recycled rubber and contribute to a sustainable future," he said.

PM: PETRONAS on strategic moves to adapt to global uncertainties
KUALA LUMPUR: PETRONAS' strategic decision to rationalise its asset portfolio is driven by the need to optimise investments, adapt to global market uncertainties and ensure the company remains competitive and sustainable in the long term, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said that being among the Top 10 in its field globally, PETRONAS must consider long-term perspectives, given the uncertainties in the world of the oil and gas market. 'PETRONAS is making calculated decisions to release older assets and reinvest in new ventures to ensure maximum resource utilisation,' he said during the Minister Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat. Anwar noted that PETRONAS makes these decisions with commercial prudence and without political interference to uphold its esteemed reputation. Anwar acknowledged that over 5,000 workers might be affected in streamlining operations but said that comprehensive support measures are in place to assist them. 'We are ensuring those affected receive training for new opportunities, with guarantees such as a year-long salary,' he said. Concerning PETRONAS' strategy on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports and how it would maintain its profit portfolio, the Prime Minister explained that PETRONAS imports only what is necessary. 'Our import strategy is aligned with maintaining a competitive and commercially viable portfolio. PETRONAS balances imports and exports to maintain profitability,' he said. The Prime Minister also informed the Dewan Rakyat that over 4.6 million members of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) have made withdrawals from the Flexible Account since May 2024, with total withdrawals amounting to RM14.79bil as of June 30. 'The remaining balance in the Flexible Balance Account stands at RM10.16bil,' he said when asked whether the government will allow a special EPF withdrawal in 2025 by moving 30% from Account 1 to Account 3.

Rubber land consolidation progresses to boost local rubber industry
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities has confirmed that the clustering and consolidation of small-scale rubber plots are progressing well. Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani stated that discussions with smallholders have been held to explore land management solutions. He highlighted that this initiative could reduce Malaysia's reliance on imported rubber, which hit 1.1 million metric tonnes last year. 'These smallholdings are in the process of consolidation. We have held discussions with them (the smallholders) and if they are not interested in managing their land, they can lease it to the Malaysian Rubber Board so that we can manage it together with the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda),' he said. Johari spoke after launching the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 ceremony at the ministry. Deputy Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin and ministry staff were also present at the event. Johari added that the government will enhance replanting efforts for all commodity sectors under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). 'The replanting programme will be given emphasis under the 13MP to help smallholders and to serve as a recurring source of income for the country,' he said.
