Bivol Claims Undisputed Light Heavyweight Title After Seizing Five Belts from Beterbiev in Historic Rematch at Riyadh Season

In the presence of HE Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA), Russian boxer Dmitry Bivol seized five championship belts from his Canadian rival Artur Beterbiev, becoming the undisputed world champion in the light heavyweight division. This historic rematch, 'The Last Crescendo,' took place at the ANB Arena as part of Riyadh Season.
The main event, watched by boxing fans worldwide, began with the playing of the Saudi Royal Anthem before the fierce battle between the two fighters commenced. Bivol delivered an impressive performance in the first two rounds, but Beterbiev came back strong in the third, landing several powerful punches that gave him an advantage in the middle rounds.
However, in the ninth round, Bivol staged a major comeback, asserting dominance and securing decisive points, leading the judges to grant him the victory by majority decision. With this win, the focus now shifts to a potential third fight, which would serve as the ultimate decider after both fighters have claimed one victory each.
This defeat marks the first in Beterbiev's career, while Bivol demonstrated significant growth from his previous loss, securing the five major titles: the WBA (World Boxing Association), WBC (World Boxing Council), IBF (International Boxing Federation), WBO (World Boxing Organization), and The Ring Championship.
Following his triumph, Bivol expressed his satisfaction, stating: 'After my loss, I felt more at ease and didn't put as much pressure on myself as I did in the previous fight. I focused solely on boxing from round one to round twelve, knowing I had done enough to secure the win.'
When asked about the difference between this fight and their previous encounter, he responded: 'The difference was in my performance. I was better, I pushed myself harder, I was more confident, lighter on my feet, and I wanted the win badly today.'
Regarding his future plans, Bivol confirmed his readiness for any upcoming challenge but emphasized the need for some rest due to injuries sustained during training camp:
'I'm ready for any challenge in the future, but I need some rest. I suffered an injury last summer, and this time, I also had injuries and had to undergo treatment throughout my training camp. Now, I need time to recover before I return to the ring.'
The action-packed night began with a dominant victory for Saudi boxer Ziyad Al-Maiouf, who secured a well-earned win against Brazil's Jonatas de Oliveira in the welterweight division. After a strong performance, he claimed victory by unanimous decision after six rounds, proving his superiority with ease.
In the super featherweight division, Saudi boxer Mohammed Al-Aql delivered an outstanding display against Argentina's Angel Gomez, controlling the fight and winning by unanimous decision after six rounds, adding another victory to his record.
In a thrilling bout, Callum Smith of the UK captured the WBO Interim Light Heavyweight Title after a hard-fought battle against Joshua Buatsi. Smith displayed remarkable resilience despite suffering a bloody facial injury, ultimately securing a unanimous decision victory.
Germany's Agit Kabayel claimed the WBC Interim Heavyweight Title after knocking out China's Zhilei Zhang in the sixth round. The bout was characterized by a lack of stamina from both fighters before Kabayel delivered a decisive knockout punch, leaving Zhang unable to recover. Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk personally handed Kabayel the championship belt as he celebrated his 26th career win.
In the WBC Super Welterweight Interim Title fight, American Vergil Ortiz Jr. dominated Uzbekistan's Israil Madrimov, winning by unanimous decision in an impressive performance that cemented his place in the division.
The WBC Middleweight World Title fight between Carlos Adames from the Dominican Republic and Britain's Hamzah Sheeraz ended in a split draw, allowing Adames to retain his title in a contest that lacked a clear winner.
In the lightweight division, American Shakur Stevenson delivered a masterclass performance against Britain's Josh Padley, knocking him down three times before Padley opted to retire in the ninth round. With this victory, Stevenson successfully defended his WBC Lightweight World Title, reaffirming his dominance in the division.
New Zealand's Joseph Parker delivered a crushing victory against Martin Bakole of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who stepped in as a last-minute replacement for Daniel Dubois just 48 hours before the fight due to Dubois falling ill. The referee stopped the fight in the second round after Parker landed a knockout blow that left Bakole unable to continue. With this win, Parker retained the WBO Interim Heavyweight Title.

Al Qadsiah coach González eyes dream start with Super Cup push

Saudi Gazette report HONG KONG — Al Qadsiah manager Michel González says the 2025 Saudi Super Cup presents the perfect launchpad for a strong start to the new season, adding that only the absence of Al Hilal keeps the tournament from being a complete showcase of Saudi Arabia's top football talent. Speaking ahead of his team's semi-final clash with Al Ahli in Hong Kong, González downplayed any fear factor. 'Unlike last season, we don't fear any team,' he said. 'This tournament is a reward for our efforts last year, and it gives us motivation to continue on the same path. We know the level of the opponent, but we are not afraid.' González was candid in his view that the competition features the top four teams from last season — but added with a smirk, 'The tournament only misses one thing Al Hilal.' When asked if the opponent being Al Ahli rather than Hilal changed anything in terms of preparation, the Spanish coach responded: 'Whether it's Hilal or Ahli, our preparation stays the same. We have top-level international players and are happy to be part of this tournament. Honestly, with Hilal not participating, we should've gone straight to the final.'Pressed on Al Ahli's invitation to replace Hilal, González deflected: 'That's not my job to comment on. My job is to prepare my team that's your job as journalists.'Reflecting on Al Qadsiah's 1994 Asian Cup win in Hong Kong, he said: 'Football moves fast. But we're ambitious and want to bring that trophy back from Hong Kong again, based on what we built last season.'On the rising expectations following a summer of signings and investment, González said: 'It's not just about spending money. Some clubs spent far more than us last season but finished below us. It's about building a team. We have 25 players of high value.'Addressing the departure of star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the arrival of Mateo Retegui, he was full of praise for the former: 'Aubameyang gave us a lot on and off the pitch. He was great for the group. But the club made a decision for the future by signing Retegui. Big names must deliver big performances. That's the challenge.'The Spanish coach closed his remarks by defending Saudi football against global skepticism. 'Many people speak about spending, but what Al Hilal did at the Club World Cup answered all those critics. Some talk without even watching. The competitiveness here is real.'Meanwhile, Belgian goalkeeper Koen Casteels thanked Hong Kong for the warm welcome and said the team is fully focused on delivering a top performance.'The preparation period went well. It was exciting to see our fans waiting at the hotel, it shows the growth of Saudi football.'

Jaissle eyes Super Cup title as Ahli embrace late invitation

Saudi Gazette report HONG KONG — Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle struck a confident tone ahead of his team's Saudi Super Cup semi-final clash against Al Qadsiah, saying his side is fully focused on lifting the trophy even though their participation came via a last-minute invitation. Speaking at a press conference in Hong Kong, Jaissle said: 'This match wasn't originally on our calendar, but once the invitation came, we embraced it. We aim to be true ambassadors of the nation and that means playing to win.' Jaissle, who is coaching in Hong Kong for the first time, played down concerns about the unfamiliar conditions: 'No reason to worry about the weather. The team is well prepared, and I'm optimistic heading into the season.' He also addressed recent speculation over team leadership after goalkeeper Edouard Mendy wore the captain's armband in a friendly against Al Riyadh, despite Franck Kessié being on the pitch. 'There's no issue at all,' he said. 'After Firmino's departure, we let the players vote on who should captain the team. The options were Mendy, Kessié, Majrashi, and Ibañez, the squad chose Mendy.' Asked about Al Qadsiah coach Michel González's comment that his side deserves to be in the final, Jaissle replied diplomatically: 'I can't comment on what my colleague said. We're focused and prepared.' With several high-profile exits this summer — including Allan Saint-Maximin, Roberto Firmino, and Gabri Viega — Jaissle declined to be drawn into the reasons. 'I've said before I won't speak about the transfer market. The window is still open, but right now, all focus is on Qadsiah and the Super Cup.' Jaissle also expressed his gratitude for working in Saudi Arabia, highlighting the rapid progress of domestic football. 'Everyone here is working tirelessly to improve the league. I hope to still be here in 2034 to witness the World Cup in Saudi Arabia.' For his part, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy said the squad is eager to make the most of the opportunity: 'We began preparing for the new season before we even knew we'd be playing in this competition. Now we want to win.' He added: 'We took the chance to win the AFC Elite Championship, and now we aim for a new trophy. We know Qadsiah well it will be a great game.'

Blanc keeps Ronaldo plan under wraps as Al Ittihad prepare for Al Nassr showdown

Saudi Gazette report HONG KONG — Al Ittihad head coach Laurent Blanc remained tight-lipped on how he plans to contain Cristiano Ronaldo, as his side prepares to face Al Nassr in the Saudi Super Cup semi-final in Hong Kong. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Blanc was asked directly about his approach to stopping Ronaldo. He replied with a smile: 'If I had the solution to stop Ronaldo, I wouldn't share it with you. He's a great player, and Al Nassr have a lot of quality players. We need to defend well and score to win.' Blanc, who took over Al Ittihad during the last summer, emphasized the team's mental and psychological readiness. 'We are here with one clear goal to win the tournament. We are mentally prepared, and we know our opponent well,' he said. Asked whether Al Ittihad plans to make squad changes after the tournament, Blanc replied: 'The transfer window is still open, but I don't know if we'll make changes... we'll see.' The French coach praised his squad's performance last season, saying: 'The team did well and showed a strong level. We're missing Hassan Kadesh and Fawaz Al-Sqoor in defense, but we have good replacements.' On potential new signings, Blanc added: 'I've already said it would be great to have two or three more players to strengthen the league with more talent. But I'm satisfied with the squad I have.' Team captain Karim Benzema also spoke at the press conference, saying he looked forward to facing his former Real Madrid teammate Ronaldo. 'It's always special to face someone you once played with. Cristiano is an outstanding player. But tomorrow's match is about Al Ittihad vs Al Nassr.' Sending a message to the fans, Benzema concluded: 'To our dear Saudi supporters we need your support. We'll show you what we can do on the pitch.'
