Egypt, Czech Republic to Enhance Military Cooperation
Egypt and the Czech Republic on Saturday agreed to boost cooperation and exchange expertise between the two countries' air forces.
The statement came during the visit of Egyptian Commander of the Air Force Mahmoud Fouad Abdel Gawad to the Czech Republic, where he held meetings with officials of the armed forces to discuss boosting aspects of military cooperation.
'The visit comes within the framework of the keenness of the General Command of the Armed Forces to promote military cooperation fields with sisterly and friendly countries,' according to the Egyptian army spokesperson.
Abdel Gawad met with Commander of Czech Air Force Petr Cepelka and First Deputy of Czech Defense Minister Frantisek Sulc.
The meetings tackled the strength and depth of the Egyptian-Czech relations and the importance of boosting aspects of cooperation and exchanging expertise between the Egyptian and Czech air forces in the coming period, the spokesperson said.
Abdel Gawad also met with Deputy Foreign Minister Jiri Kozak. They agreed on boosting aspects of strategic partnership between their countries' air forces, in addition to opening new cooperation horizons in the field of aviation industry.
The Egyptian Commander then visited the premises of the Czech aircraft company of Aero Vodochody. He said both sides are sharing viewpoints on a number of issues of mutual interest.
On Tuesday, Egyptian Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Hassan El-Khatib discussed with Czech Ambassador in Cairo Ivan Jukl ways of fostering economic and trade cooperation between Egypt and the Czech Republic.
Khatib highlighted the depth of relations, underlining the importance of increasing joint investments and establishing partnerships between the public and private sectors in both countries.
The Minister said he plans to visit the Czech Republic soon along with an official delegation that comprises representatives of the Egyptian business community, to inform the Czech side about the recent reforms aimed at improving the business climate in Egypt.
For his part, the Czech ambassador expressed his country's willingness to share experience with Egypt in bringing about economic and institutional transformation, reducing unemployment rates and supporting innovation and technology.
'Egypt enjoys competitive advantages, citing the tax policy that helps the country to be an attractive destination for non-labor-intensive investments, noting Czech companies seek to expand their presence in promising markets, such as Egypt,' Jukl said.
The two sides then agreed on activating the joint business council and holding a forum bringing together business representatives from the public and private sectors in both countries to strengthen investment partnerships and expand bilateral cooperation.

Pentagon slashes in half its request for Air Force F-35s
The Pentagon is scaling back by half its request to Congress for the US Air Force's Lockheed Martin F-35 jets, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday. A US Defense Department procurement request document sent to Capitol Hill this week asked for 24 of the planes, down from 48 that were forecast last year, the report said. Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Lockheed Martin and the Department of Defense did not respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours. The Air Force now plans to seek $3.5 billion for the F-35 aircraft, and another $531 million for advance procurement of materials for it, the report said. The Pentagon has also requested 12 of the Navy's carrier version of the F-35, lower than the 17 Congress approved for this fiscal year, while the Marines would also see a reduction of two from this year's funding, the report added. In May, Lockheed Martin's finance chief said the firm expects to be awarded a finalized contract on its F-35 jets, which have been beset by delays related to a technology upgrade. The defense contractor delivered a total of 110 F-35 fighter jets to the United States and its allies in 2024. Lockheed's F-35 program accounts for around 30 percent of the company's revenue.

Tunisian-led Convoy Heads to Gaza to Break Israeli Siege
Hundreds of activists joined a land convoy of buses and private cars, which departed from Tunisia's capital on Monday heading for Gaza, reported AFP. The aim of the convoy is to 'break the siege' imposed on the Gaza Strip, which has become 'the hungriest place on Earth,' according to the UN. While the nine-bus convoy will not bring aid into the enclave, it aims to break the blockade in a 'symbolic act.' The convoy, which carries the name 'Soumoud' (steadfastness), involves activists and doctors and is expected to reach the southern Gaza city of Rafah by the end of the week, according to the spokeswoman of the Tunisian Coordination of Joint Action for Palestine, the group organizing the convoy, Jawaher Channa. The land convoy includes around thousand people from Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, Morocco and Libya, with more people expected to join along its journey. 'We are about a thousand people, and we will have more join us along the way,' Channa said. The convoy will travel along the Tunisian and Libyan coasts, before crossing Egypt into Rafah. However, the Egyptian authorities have not yet given permissions for the convoy to cross its borders, Channa said. The North African initiative follows a similar one by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, in which its Madleen aid boat failed to reach Gaza's coast as Israeli forces seized it and detained all activists on board. The boat sailed from Sicily towards Gaza on June 1 to challenge the ongoing Israeli blockade and deliver a small amount of aid, in a symbolic show of support. Madleen was carrying 12 activists, including Greta Thunberg and Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament.
