Coimbatore Corporation to hold special camps to correct ESI record errors for contract workers

The Hindu11-07-2025
Contract conservancy workers employed by the Coimbatore Corporation are facing difficulties in accessing medical care due to discrepancies in their Employees' State Insurance (ESI) records. Errors such as incorrect personal details and inclusion of deceased family members have led to delays, especially during emergencies.
The Corporation employs over 3,400 contract conservancy workers. A portion of their wages is deducted towards ESI contributions, entitling them to medical benefits.
Workers said that ESI identity cards were not issued for several years despite repeated demands. Following protests and pressure from trade unions, ESI certificates were issued last year. However, many of these documents reportedly contain errors, including incorrect mobile numbers, marital status mismatches, and outdated information. In some cases, names of deceased parents have been listed as active dependents.
Due to these discrepancies, several workers have been denied timely medical assistance or have faced delays in treatment.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said ward wise special camps will be held to assist workers in updating their ESI records, including name corrections and addition of valid family members. He added that the issue would be resolved within 10 days.

Tiruvannamalai Corporation to donate non-biodegradable waste for road-laying works

As part of its green initiative, Tiruvannamalai Corporation is all set to donate its accumulated 250 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste, mostly plastic waste like PET bottles, from Monday onwards to use for road laying works. Officials of Tiruvannamalai Corporation, who have spearheaded the initiative, said that a Coimbatore-based Startup has signed an MoU with the Corporation to collect untreated non-biodegradable wastes from Micro Compost Centres (MCC) of the civic body free of cost. Donated plastic waste by the corporation will be used by the startup for road-laying works in the Coimbatore region. 'The first shipment of plastic waste will be given to the startup on Monday. Thereafter, the private firm will take the collected plastic waste from MCCs at least once a week on its own. It helps us to make the town much cleaner as the total volume of waste to landfill will be minimal,' S. Selva Balaji, Commissioner, Tiruvannamalai Corporation, told The Hindu. As per the plan, accumulated plastic waste at MCCs, which are located at the centre of the town, will be safely disposed of by the Startup in the coming days. Each MCC, on an average, spreads over 2,000 sq ft and covers at least 4,000 households, covering four wards within the corporation limits, which comprises 39 wards. Every day, on an average, 65-70 tonnes of waste are generated in the town. Of this, around 20 tonnes of waste is plastic waste, mostly PET bottles. Each ward has 60-70 streets with around 400 households and a capacity of 300 kg of garbage generation. Corporation officials said regular disposal of plastic wastes will provide more space at MCCs to treat biowastes into organic manure for farmers in surrounding villages. Initially, the project will be implemented in the core areas of the town before extending it to more areas. The civic body was expanded into a corporation in January 2025 by merging 18 surrounding villages.

Kerala aims to become Carbon neutral by 2050: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 10 (UNI) Kerala aims to become carbon neutral by 2050, and the Green Budget 2025 of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, introduced as part of sustainable development initiatives, is a major step towards achieving this goal, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. 'Thiruvananthapuram has become the first city in Kerala to implement a Green Budget. The budget outlines activities in the city aimed at limiting carbon emissions, serving as a model for other local bodies,' the CM said. He was speaking after inaugurating the seed ball manufacturing project implemented by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and launching the Green Budget 2025 at Putharikandam Maidan yesterday. The Chief Minister said discussions on climate change and natural disasters are taking place across the world. However, there is still no global consensus on combating climate change. 'Even at the UN Climate Change Conference, no clear guidelines were formulated. Instead of waiting for such global agreements, we are moving ahead with our own actions,' he added. He stated that incentives are being provided for electric vehicles, along with the promotion of green hydrogen hubs and renewable energy sources. The Corporation's work to make Thiruvananthapuram a solar city is commendable. As part of this, solar panels are being installed on government office buildings at a cost of ₹125 crore. Electric buses are being purchased, and the Corporation has procured and distributed 100 electric autorickshaws. Such initiatives will help Thiruvananthapuram become one of the fastest-developing cities, he said. The seed ball campaign had planned to involve 6,000 students, but an additional 1,000 students joined. The seed balls they prepared will be planted in office premises and barren lands under the 'Green Trivandrum' concept. By depositing four lakh seed balls across various parts of the city, large-scale tree growth can be encouraged. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that such activities to tackle environmental challenges would also help create significant eco-friendly awareness. UNI DS RKM
